    Awareness Test

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but I saw a version of this in a lecture about a year ago, and it's pretty cool.

Don't give the answer to the test away here without a spoiler!

This is no surprise. The guy in the bear suit was conveniently dressed in the same color as the group of guys we're told not to watch. What do you expect? In order to make an accurate count, you have to focus on passes made by the guys in white to the exclusion of all else. They could have flown an F-16 through that crowd and you wouldn't have seen it.

    Very cool.
Thanks for the memories, George. You made the Yankees what they are today... Champions!

My psychology teacher showed this to our class. Pretty cool.

You'd like to think so, but I've seen other versions where the guy in the bear suit is dressed even more ridiculously and people still miss it. That's actually one of the points- that guy can be in a friggin clown suit and you wouldn't see him.

That's kind of what I meant. It's really more of a test of focus rather than a test of awareness. If an audience is asked to concentrate fully on one changing aspect of the video landscape, it's a testament to their success that they miss all the elephants dancing in pink tutus in the background outside their area of focus. They didn't fail to notice the bear - they succeeded in avoiding distraction when faced with many busy extraneous elements.
