    Top Chef Thread

    Season 4 starts tonight on Bravo. My wife got me into the show and it really is pretty good. I know some of you guys out there watch this too because of your women. We can safely discuss it here.

    Plus alot of the contestants work at NYC restaurants, so you might find a nice new place to eat.

    There was a marathon of this on this past Saturday. I wasn't feeling well, just laid on the couch and watched TV all day--and WOW did I get hooked. I can't wait for the new episode tonight. I can't believe I've been missing this all this time!

    Nimmi was really in way over her head.

    I think my early favorites are Dale and Richard. Richard dishes seemed really edgy.

    I was ticked about missing last night, until I realized that Bravo reruns each episode eleventy-seven times a week. According to their website, they've already rerun it twice, and we still have these chances left:

    I thought it was bullcrap the people that lost the quickfire challenge got to choose the dish they made in the real challenge. "Hey, congratulations for winning the challenge, as a reward you get to pick an opponent from these 6 other people that you really know nothing about since you just met. You all that lost, will get to pick the dish that you both will make and will determine whether or not you go home today." Didn't that seem a little backwards?

    I realize there was a set list of dishes and they all should have been things chefs know how to make, but I would've rather chosen the dish, than my opponent.
    I have to return some videotapes.

    Absolutely, cooking something that would be in your wheelhouse is a bigger advantage. Imagine if you actually knew how to cook a good souffle, that would basically be game set match rigth off the bat.

    Agreed. And how come they didn't pick a quickfire winner? Usually one chef gets immunity in the elimination challenge.

    How are you a chef at ANY level and not know what's in Chicken Piccata? I might have kicked that guy out just for that.

    What are the odds that a couple would both end up being selected for Top Chef? I'm sure that they get thousands of video applications each year. What's the likelihood that both would get picked? I have a feeling that the producers wanted to inject that into the "intrigue" this season. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out and what effect it'll have on the contestants and group challenges.

    Seems like it'll be a good season. I like this show.

    They should not have done it just to add some intrigue into the show, I don't think the show needs any intrigue, it's good as it is. However, perhaps they met at some restaurant or at culinary school so it isn't that farfetched that they both could deserve to be on there.

    She's the main reason that my fiancee started watching the show with me. I have a lot of respect for her in that she didnt go through a bunch of surgeries to get the scar on her arm covered up, rather she saw it as something that made her unique. She's definitely attractive. I'm jealous that she stays that thin while eating all that yummy food!

    The producers of Top Chef just love ratcheting up the drama. Did you watch season 2 with Marcel vs. Ilan? I can definitely see them doing something like this.

    I agree with you that the show doesn't need any intrigue, but I certainly wouldn't put it beyond the producers to do it.

    "Model, author and Emmy-nominated host of ‘Top Chef' Padma Lakshmi gave birth to a baby girl named Krishna Thea Lakshmi on Saturday," her rep tells People.com. "Mother and baby are well and happy."

    Though she has yet to reveal the identity of the baby's father, Lakshmi, 39, announced she was expecting last October.

    Last month, Lakshmi hinted she was going to give her daughter "a classically Indian Sanskrit name."

    "Not a fancy name, but a name that is close to my family," she explained to People. "It will be after someone in my family."
    Congratulations to Padma.

    I know that Top Chef Masters will begin airing on April 7th. I've read that season 7 of Top Chef is supposed to begin shooting in April. Hopefully TC will air shortly after TCM finishes it's second season run.

    I can't get in to this show. All the chefs are major douche's who are trying to just get as much air time as possible by acting either crazy/zany/asshole. Totally takes away from the actual food competition.

    Chef's are douches. Especially good ones.

    I don't think it takes away from the food though. This show is marketed to and adored by food geeks and they love it.

    When it's back up and running, go to Tom Collicchio's blog on the show's web site. He offers some very well articulated insight into why the various chefs and/or dishes worked or failed to work.

    In the season before last, eventual winner Hosea Rosenberg knew the finals were to be in New Orleans, and asked the head of my son's Culinary School (who had been a highly-acclaimed chef in NO) for some instruction. The Dean agreed, with the caveat that his students could sit in. When the finals were on TV, and Hosea started making the roux, my son was just about giggling, because it was exactly the roux the Dean had told Chef Rosenberg to create. Seems not all chefs are douches.

    Oh I do, I read it every week. I love the show and I am a big foodie.

    That's a nice story (and a good strategy by Hosea). And you are right, I shouldn't have made a generalization like that, that's unfair. But in my experience there is something about chefs that are douchey/cocky (and that could be a result of the biz). Even one of my better friends in my life who owns a restaurant that was very well-reviewed by the NYTimes is just a bit into himself, he is a sweetheart as a friend and very personable, but still a cocky dude.

Mr. Dobias, who has been airing grievances on the Internet since opening the restaurant in 2008, shrugged off the conflict in an interview on Thursday and said that he had found a new purveyor. “What are we, teenage girls now?” he said. “How is it good business to make decisions off some lame thing you read on the Internet?” Mr. Dobias is an extreme example of how chefs are now going online to confront customers, bloggers, critics, rivals and sometimes even their bosses.

    Of all the seasons, I think that Fabio Viviani (born and raised in Italy) made the most consistently appetizing dishes, plus he was very personable. He didn't win, came close, but boy could he cook. Plus he despises cilantro, so that made me admire him even more. He thinks it tastes like dirty, soapy dishwater and should be banned from any dish, and I couldn't agree more.

    I sometimes check out at his Twitter page and he comes up with good recipes (his and his mom's) and tips.
    In fact, Sterger claims that, in one of the photos Favre allegedly sent her, he's masturbating — while wearing a pair of Crocs.

    I liked the Top Chef Masters because they were doing it for charity and they helped each other be better, not sabotaged each other like on the regular seasons.

    No, Fabio's best line was "This is-a Top-a Chef not a Top-a Scallop."

    Fabio was ok as a chef, definitely not one of the best though in my opinion, not even the best on his season, Stefan was. Great personality though.

    And Top Chef Masters had some douches on it too, Michael Chiarello being chief among them.

    I remember that! He was such a great character, a little cocky, but very funny and likeable.

    What I liked about Fabio as a cook was that none of his dishes were pretentious. They were elegant in their relative simplicity - somewhat rustic - without going over the top to impress. He can also bring a sophisticated flair to those dishes. You could also sense that "love" in his cooking that many Italian mothers and grandmothers bring to their dishes. And, like I said, he despises cilantro, so that alone makes him alright in my book!

    I agree, Stefan was an excellent chef.

    I love fabio! That was probably my favorite season. Carla was great too. And stefan, even though he was arrogant at times.

    They started filming this season just six weeks after Padma Lakshmi gave birth, so she's looking especially boobalicious.

    Fabio was probably my all-time favorite TC personality, but Stefan really did deserve it (from what we saw, not that we can taste the food). He seemed like an excellent chef. I actually liked Hosea though, sooo...

    Padma's definitely giving Gail a run for her money in the rack department.


    This season looks like it may be good...but last season was pretty stacked with some good chefs. Kevin, the voltaggio's, jen...I think they were all good enough to win last season. Jen seemed to just break down towards the end, that was a shame. She made some pretty nice dishes.

    Yeah he was a bit of an oddball... I hope this season can stack up to the past 2 seasons. They have been excellent.

    I think it is going to be tough for this season's chefs to compete with those top four that you listed. But that doesn't mean the season won't be fun. It always is.

    Plus I am going to enjoy them to be doing it in my 'hood.
