    Max Kellerman Show Discussion Thread

Joe Sheehan from baseball prospectus is on the show now, and thinks Hughes will have an ERA of 3.4 or 3.5. Also for some reason he said Joba will only pitch about 100 innings in the majors (50 BP and 50 in the rotation), Kellerman disagreed (thought he'd be around 130), then I spaced out

Thanks for the heads up. I will turn it on.

I happen to like Kellerman a lot. I rarely get a chance to listen to him though. He's such a Yankee homer, and I LOVE IT. I haven't listened to the show since Brian Kenny came along - I know he's a big stats guy...how is he on the show? Does he seem like a Yankee homer too?

No, I actually received a phone call. However, Kellerman is the only show on the radio that is actually knowledgable when it comes to baseball. You might not like his personality, but he usually knows what he is talking about.

Kellerman is definitely a huge Yankees homer, but he's one of the few guys on the radio who is actually knowledgeable and uses stats and sabermetrics to back up his point (and also has no problem mocking those who don't understand it which can be amusing). He can be kind of obnoxious, but he's generally an awesome listen.

Kellerman is also willing to do one of those rare things for a radio host: admit when he is wrong.

    Sterling is a homer

Max at the very least knows how to look up stats. He is tough on the ears b/c he is a self promoter but I doubt John S would even know how to spell prospectus.

    I love Max Kellerman.

Granted it's partly because he openly roots for the Yankees, but it's also because I think he has some interesting perspectives on issues.

I don't listen to sports radio or watch ESPN very much at all, really, other than to listen to/watch games, but Kellerman is by far the best sports radio show out there that I've heard. I've only heard his show a few times, but I was amazed that he's so far ahead of the other radio hosts (imo) when it comes to knowledge of statistical analysis, etc. If I knew what time he's on I might even listen.

Everytime I hear him it's little more than recycled opinions backed up by a few cherry picked stats. Just because he's a huge Yanks homer doesn't mean his opinions are worth more than anyone elses.
Personally I don't think there is a decent baseball guy on any of the NY sports talk stations which is a little sad.

He is a Yankee homer, but I'd expect that from a New York based radio show that is heavily centered around baseball.

Take a drink every time he says, "Max Kellerman."

"Hi, this is Max Kellerman, you're listening to the Max Kellerman Show on 1050 ESPN Radio with me, Max Kellerman. I, Max Kellerman, will be talking about the Yankees today on the Max Kellerman show, starring me, Max Kellerman, from 10 to 1 every day on the Max Kellerman Show."

Best sports radio host around bar none. It's a shame he has a crappy time slot, don't get to listen to him much.

His "self centeredness" is part of his shtick. It's meant to be funny, which it is.

I love when he talks about how New York is the only place that counts, and that everytime you leave New York it's as if the world is in a timeout. The guy cracks me up with those type of ridiculous statements... (Even though that one's true..)

You have your opinion, I have mine.

I don't find him to be enlightening and I often find more reasoned analysis of the Yankees on this board than on his show.

If he was so good they would have dropped him in a better spot, 10-12 isn't exactly the spot that radio guys aspire to and it's not like Screamin' A Smith is great shakes 2-4pm.

I listen to him everyday, do you? Saying he uses recycled opinions and cherry picks stats, is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. He usually has guest on from baseball prospectus and pinstripes plus, what other baseball talk show does that? Of course this board has more statistical analysis, they have to make the show entertaining for everyone.

Thats exactly the point though, screaming A is a moron, but he he has a better slot, same with Mike and Mike in the morning. Mike and the Mad Dog have a show that last 5 and a half hours and they are the most unknowledgable people on the air. The slot doesn't really determine the quality of the show.

I enjoy the Max Kellerman show. Does anyone know of a way to listen to his shows after they air? Is there an Internew link? I have very few opportunities most days to listen during the day.

Kellerman is a big Yankees fan. I also like the extras he adds like the Super Hero All-Star Teams. Funny stuff.

I also enjoy Kellerman's boxing discussions. He's the only host I know of who knows anything about boxing.

Having good guests is a totally different issue. Michael Kay has good guests but that doesn't get him alot of love most places.
My issue isn't with the guests that Kellerman has on, it's with the opinions that he personally espouses.
He's a knowledgeable guy about boxing and if I like that sport I'd probably listen to him more.

And to answer your question, no the timeslot certainly doesn't determine the quality of the show but given that radio is a ratings driven business and higher ratings equal more ad dollars if Kellerman was a superior draw he would get a better time slot. The fact that he remained in the 10-12 slot indicates that the audience in general doesn't really like his show over others.

No, but it determines the ability to attract listeners, which the Max Kellerman Show with Max Kellerman starring Max Kellerman apparently doesn't have. I mean, those 2 Met clowns on WFAN are kicking his butt in the ratings for heaven's sake, and I swear an old lady doing bird calls could beat them. Kellerman leaving "Around the Horn" is pretty much the sports talk equivalent of Shelley Long leaving "Cheers." One of those "what were you thinking?" career moves.

Personally, I swore off Max Kellerman's Max Kellerman Show starring Max Kellerman about a year ago when he spent a solid week or so insisting the 2007-08 Knicks were going to be a 55-60-win powerhouse team in the NBA. He hung on to this idea like a pit bull and shouted down anyone who tried to disagree.

So I guess "smart sports talk" can be a very relative term.

I don't get a chance to listen to any radio but I can tell you as a business student who may care:
    • The station manager
    • The station owner
    • The advertisers
    • Anyone with financial interest in the show
    And last but not least:
    • The General Audience

Kellerman gets FAR better ratings than Steve A. Smith did in the same timeslot. I work in Advertising and we subscribe to Arbitron (the radio equivalent of the Nielsens) so I know it for a fact over the books. Steven A.'s ratings were absolutely dismal there and Kellerman trounces him across the board (I'll have to see how SAS is doing in his later slot, but I'm not sure.)

FYI, the 1050 signal is also far weaker than the WFAN signal as well. I've been able to pick up WFAN as far south as Baltimore whereas WEPN (1050) disappears somewhere in South Jersey (at the same point where most of the New York FM stations disappear).

The 1050 signal is awful. I have serious problems with it if I so much as move 2 or 3 miles to the south or west, and I'm about 15-25 miles from the station depending where exactly it is in New York.

I really love Kellerman. There's such a great mix of entertainment and information on the show. I also LOVE the "T-fag" segments a.k.a. Typical Football Analyst Guy. If anyone was listening, i think it was two days ago, when T-Fag went off about Brett Favre...it was absolutely HILARIOUS.

Also, the prank calls by Mr. Buttcheeks crack me up as well. It's also one of the only radio shows that talks about boxing, which is nice, and Max basically worships baseball analysts like Bill James and is extremely New York biased. Gotta love it.

Yuppp, I've heard him a couple times before. He sounds like a 16 year old who is even more nasal than usual. Its basically the only reason he isn't on the radio or TV now, because he is absurdly popular for a sports columnist

Re: Max Kellerman Show Discussion Thread

Kellerman's show is great. I do not get to listen to it alot but when I do, i just love him. All of the shows on 1050 are great except for Mike Tirico which is an idiot. Kenny also adds to the show and Kellerman is defenitely in favor of the Yankees when talking about anything baseball related.
