    Spring Training Minor League Thread

I am curious to know what is going on with some of our young studs down in Tampa, but I don't feel like rifling through other threads to get an idea of what is happening.

And because I have no idea what is happening, I have nothing of substance to add, but I am sure some of you guys do.

Is anyone impressing so far? Is anyone disappointing? Injuries? How are the sleepers to make the big league roster performing?

Talk about all that stuff here.

Any articles on Melancon besides the Sherman piece? What is he sitting at right now?

I heard Sweeney Murti on WFAN, and also read a blurb in the NY Post, that Girardi was impressed with Gardner and Jackson. He feels Gardner is slightly ahead of Jackson at this point. He really likes Gardner's speed in the OF, and his ability to put the ball in play and move. Sees him as a first option if OF help is needed during the season, although he would not rule out Gardner making the team out of ST if things break his way.

The last 2 sentences are from Sweeney Murti.

I think Gardner would be a great 4th outfielder/pinch runner, but I'd want him getting at bats at the AAA level in April

I read somewhere that Gardner actually acted as a catcher in camp for day or two. His quote was something like - if I had to catch in the majors I'd be on the DL after two days.

Out of 5 pitches that Wang threw at Montero, 4 were hit for line drives including one that went to the opposite field warning track.

I will add that if you go to ST, check out some minor league games. Especially road games where the player access is even better. Great fun.

I guess because of his rehab process he might be different, I was just referring to how pitchers in camp usually aren't pitching at full midseason velocities right now

Time for the kid Catchers to work with the pitchers they will be catching during the season. The only surprise is Eric. I thought he would get a longer look-see. Probably too many guys at First, and not enough ABs to go around.

Giambi, Ensberg, Shelley, Betemit and possibly Miranda are all ahead of Eric Duncan on the depth chart at 1B right now (is Lane included here too? I know he's been playing mostly OF, but isn't 1B a possibility as well?). Eric is going to have to prove himself in the minors this year for him to really get a chance.

    Mark Melancon looked good today.

Short-compact delivery. Straight-up, over-the-top slot. Threw strikes. Showed a good breaking ball. Changeup fades away from lefthanded hitters.

Very good. Got the save! .

  23. #23

Re: Spring Training Minor League Thread

    Daniel McCutchen.

Showed both of his fastballs today (4 seamer and 2 seamer). 2 seamer had good lateral movement. Good split (that 1-1 split to Ausmus looked really good). Breaking ball was kinda "blah". Nothing special.

Re: Spring Training Minor League Thread

Girardi just needs to find a way to hold the fort with the Joba and the veteran relievers on the staff until the AS break. Then Melancon, McCutchen, and/or Sanchez, could be promoted, and Joba can go back into the rotation.
    Nothing to say

I wonder if Melancon will go the Joba/Kennedy route this year and pitch starting off in Tampa to Trenton to SWB to Yankee Stadium. Also, there is another reliever named Robertson that I'm interested in who will most likely start off in Trenton this season.

Robertson actually went to my high school (he was a year ahead of me). The guy can pitch. He was Alabama's closer for his freshman year of college, and that year he was almost always coming in the eighth inning to clean up the mess our set-up man made. And he always got out of the jam.

No surprise with Hilligoss. He could hit for .300 while being under the influence.

I would have loved to see Mr. Horne arguing with Law about that one.

Law: "What makes you think you know more then me when it comes to him?"

Mr Horne: "I'm his father, jagoff."

Law: "Well that's all the questions I can take for today........"

Probably because it is the first few days of minor league spring training.

Pitchers are mostly doing PFP which isn't worth writing about.

There aren't any intrasquad games or exhibitions yet.

BP is the most exciting thing to write about.

As of yet, we haven't made a trip to Tampa---but I do believe one's in the works for next week-end. If we're down there I'll be glad to check in with ya'll and let you know what I've seen.

That probably falls under the "most asked question" category since last year. I'll just say this--Alan's always been a starter, but to tell you what he told me about the possibility of a BP move--he said, "whatever it takes, I just want to play big league ball". At this point, it's more a matter of becoming accustomed to the routine. But, to go back to your question, well, I've always known him as a starter, but as long as he's healthy, happy, and where he wants to be, then I'm for it because I'm for him.

Sounds like dad speak for...I'd really like to see the Yankees give him a shot as a starter. Given the opportunity I know he can do it.

PS. Those are my thoughts too.

I think most people see Alan as a starter, but count me one who thinks the Yankee pen could use Alan's help.

So you have to put him where you can use him. Many people only think of his trade value, but to me, I have no interest in trading him. To me his value is in how he can help the YANKEES NOW.

And to me that is not in Scranton, its in NY.

I've been thinking for the past couple of months that he would head north with the team in the bp, but since he has yet to pitch in a ML ST game thus far, it looks as if he's headed down to Scranton as a starter, which is ok too.
