Potential rule change - gaining team ownership

Okay, here's one to kick around for a bit until the 'official' rule discussion period.

Disclaimer: This has nothing personally to do with Randi or Sax!!!!

    Okay, this is a two-parter.

First, I don't like the precedent we set with the Naughty Swingers last year. If you remember, Sax had his own team and invited Randi to become co-owner with him. What I don't like about this is that it circumvents our new owner waiting list and allows an existing owner to essentially hand pick his or her successor. Sax (you know I love you Sax) was almost non-existent last year and Randi (you know I love you Randi) pretty much got back in the league without having to wait like the rest of the shmucks who are on the outside looking in.

Second, what do we do if Sax doen't re-up? Does Randi inherit the team, or does the team go to an owner on the waiting list? And even if Sax does re-up, what if it's like last year and he's only here long enough to say "I'm in" and lets Randi run the team all season again?

So...here's what I'm proposing. A new team can have have a max of two owners and if one of those owners drops out the remaining owner gets the team (pretty obvious, I think). An existing team may bring on a co-owner, but under the following conditions -

    1) The co-owner gets one year only. This allows for things like going to Africa for two months, health problems, traumatic life-changing events, etc. Bring someone on so you don't lose your team, but if by the next season you still can't devote enough time to the league you gotta let go.

    2) The co-owner isn't actually an owner at all, but more of a co-GM. After the one season the co-owner does not inherit the team but rather has to go to the waiting list, with credit for the season played. For instance, you co-GM this year and next year you sign up on the waiting list. Your co-GM year counts as a year on the waiting list, so you automatically get bumped to the 2 year list.

    Two things:

    1. I think that your conditions are pretty reasonable. I think they make a lot of sense.

Edit: Though I do kind of agree with what E is saying below. Maybe there should be a way that a team could get a co-owner, but not a get a co-owner and quit deal, where it's just to give the team to the co-owner.

    2. That being said, I think that Randi should be grandfathered in if she still wants to play (so, in other words, she should inherit the team even if Sax doesn't show up), since that rule wasn't in place before the 2007 season.

How would a new team get a co-owner?
And wouldn't that also circumvent the waiting list too?
So why should a new team get treated better than an existing one?

I thought of that, but what if someone co-owns for 3 years and then the original owner quits? Do we tell someone who has been in the league for 3 years, sorry, you're out? Do we allow the original owner, who maybe stops by once a year to re-up, to keep the team alive for the co-owner?

Just by inviting someone, I guess.

Although I see your point. Maybe they could only invite someone from the waiting list? I dunno. Maybe we just accept that there's some degree of circumvention? It's probably impossible to make a perfect rule here.

Again I see your point. Maybe we only accept solo owners.

I think there should be solo owners. It's not that hard. Take a team and take care of it all year. If you have something come up, state what your intentions are. If you need a few months off, take them. The League will assign someone to cover in your absence. You should be able to take back your team (if you want it) when your stated haitus is over.

There should also be a waiting list (in the rules??) that gets updated periodically. It seems like every year it's very vague as to who is on the waiting list.

I like having a permanent waiting list.

The waiting list could easily be kept on the league page in the commissioner's notes section. We could keep it there, with notes as to how long someone has been waiting on the list.
