It is really thin and cool looking but performance wise it is still behind the base MacBook. Will people really pay an extra $800 for something 2 lbs lighter and a half inch thinner?

I have yet to sell out to their computers. iPods? Hell yes. Macbooks? I'm still resisting.

I guess you don't need it if you always have another wireless computer around or want to carry around an external drive. But do most people have that option? I'd be surprised.Originally Posted by SalingerNY
Edit: I actually find their explanation rather comical. Need to use a CD? Oh, just go use your OTHER computer's optical drive and connect wirelessly. Well then why don't I just save that $1800 and use the other computer instead.
The Remote Disk would be fine for me. I guess it just depends on how you use your computer.Originally Posted by Steve Dalkowski

I wouldn't need it either. I guess it all depends on how you use your computer. When the new iTunes movie rental library gets built up enough, I won't even think about using a DVD.Originally Posted by SalingerNY

Why not use a USB flash drive? Faster transfer rate, greater reliability, and larger capacity than optical media.Originally Posted by Steve Dalkowski

Yeah, but even then it is a poor value. The base MacBook performs better, is $800 cheaper, weighs 2 lbs more and is only a half inch thicker.Originally Posted by BronxBaumer

Apple said the same thing when they introduced the iMac without a floppy drive. People went crazy, thinking they needed a floppy drive. PC mags ridiculed the decision to omit the floppy. And now, its hard to find a PC that ships with one. NO LAPTOPS ship with a floppy drive. Now Apple ships one of their laptops without an optical drive, and its like deja-vu all over again.Originally Posted by Yankeeah

The only thing I ever use it for is the install a new Mac OS, and watch movies once in a great while. I download most software off the internet.
Of course, having said that, I seriously doubt I would ever buy the Macbook air. I just can't justify spending that much for a laptop, no matter how thin or how cool it is. My ibook works just fine, and when I need to upgrade, a Macbook will suffice. Iff I need more power, I'll use my desktop.
Along with the Air, Apple also updated the iPod software, and you can now IM TWO OR MORE people at the same time. WOOHOO (ahem... about time! Now where's the MMS?). They announced their movie rental service, updated the iTV (or whatever that stupid thing is called) and perhaps most intriguing to me, introduced a backup system called the Time Capsule. It looks like an Airport station, but will automatically back up one or more computers WIRELESSLY with either a 500 gig or a 1 terabyte HD for $399 or $599. Looks very cool, and would be very helpful if I hadn't already bought an external backup just last month.

As I read a little closer about the Time Capsule, I am realizing that Apple is giving the Airport Extreme users the shaft bigtime. Time capsule is basically a wireless router that includes gigabit ethernet, print server, and a network hard drive.... which is all the features that the Airport Extreme has except for the hard drive. The AE was supposed to have a function that allowed any external drive connected to it to act as a network drive, but it never really seemed to work without crashing. Now Apple just released the Time Capsule... which does everything the AE was supposed to do.
... I smell a lawsuit coming Apple's way.

One of the interesting things about this computer is that you can buy it with a 64 gig solid state drive, which would have to speed things up considerably since it won't ever have to spin up or spin down a hard drive, since there is no hard drive (kinda like the iPod touch). It also raises the price considerably... up to $3,098. Now who the hell is going to need all of that? Waaaaay too expensive.Originally Posted by Dr. Gonzo
Wow, I think the MacBook Air looks really neat. But I already have my Dell laptop.

I don't think the MacBook Air is a "serious" product. I think its a niche market lure that Apple hopes will create a buzz and get more foot traffic into their stores, if for no other reason than to see just how thin the Air really is.
Once people say, "Dang, its beautiful, but too expensive!" then a helpful sales person can direct them to the more practical Macbooks and Macbook Pros. Maybe even make a few sales.
By the by, just took a quick look at some financials.
Apple Inc: 2007 net profit of 3.5 billion dollars (14.56% profit margin)
Dell: 2007 net loss of 2.6 billion dollars
When Jobs returned to a near comatose Apple in '97, who on Earth could have predicted we'd see these numbers ten years later?

That's probably what I can afford now anyway (Macbook). Maybe in a year or two, when the prices come down or they improve this one.Originally Posted by Dr. Gonzo

I guess what it comes down to is that in what scenario does the benefit of a slightly thinner computer outweigh the inconvenience of not having an optical drive? Even if I use it once a week, or every couple of weeks to play music, a DVD or access data from someone else, the value of having the ability to simply insert a CD and not have to scramble for another computer's CD drive is way more important, IMO.Originally Posted by SalingerNY
For me it's size and weight. I carry my macbook around with me in my purse all the time. That extra 2 pounds less and the smaller size would be a big deal. Again, not worth the $$$ but otherwise I'd be all over it.
Ill tell you why, because I already prob have something plugged into the one port they give you on this thing..Originally Posted by CptCrunch
Now I have the money to get this and I also am usually the first one to jump on technology..ie DVD,BLU-RAY..the iphone.. but this just doesn't seem worth the price..
it is basically a macbook, you can't upgrade the ram past 2GB, you can't replace the battery you have to have it sent in..it only has 1 USB port, no slot for a wireless cellular card, no ethernet port, and no optical drive. I like how you can wireless use an optical drive, but what if I need to boot from cd? This is software driven so how does that work, i could boot from a network drive..oh wait I can't because I have no ethernet port.. this is more for business people who travel use a few applications and need the portability..I will end up getting the aftermarket macbook tablet, its 2279 and includes a wacom tablet with 512 levels of pressure for drawing, add this with OSX 10.5 and you have a winner, I can add a bluetooth keyboard pretty easily, and this is very portable..
Id rather pay more money for a revolutionary tablet like the modbook, tablet/OSX and you can get it with a super drive, 13.3 glossy glass screen.. it starts at 2,300 but it is a mac tablet after all..

The release of the MacBook Air among other things caused Apple's stock to drop over $9.00 a share yesterday as per NyPost.
While that may be part of it, my bet is the stock is down like most others right now. Not a good time for the stock market right now.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

Apple stock always falls following an event. The major investment firms expect quarterly news, and they don't get it. I always sell my stock the week before an event. I've made thousands investing in this company the last three years. You just have to know how the company works, and how the friggtards in the firms react to them. All they care about is iPhone news. They don't get it. You have the iPod. You want the iPhone. You might buy the Mac because everything else they make is awesome. I keep saying it, Apple is the Yankees of technology.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

It's nice-looking, but but not something I need. The screen is too small for me. If would but a new laptop it would be a MacBookPro.
I still have a Powerbook as a back-up and I have an Intel iMac. Too bad the iMac stopped working Tuesday. Only 1.5 years old, so I will run to the shop tomorrow.
I could use a 50 / 80 gig iPod Touch though, but we'll have wait a bit for those.
