Thread: Lack of lefty arms in the farm system

Lack of lefty arms in the farm system

For a farm system that is so deep in pitching talent, why are there not many LHPs? Is it an organizational draft philosophy? Maybe about picking the best player available in the draft?

The only notable lefties I can think of are Michael Dunn (why doesn't he get any press?), Chase Wright, Sean Henn, and Angel Reyes (is he still a prospect?)

I think it has to do with picking the best player available in the draft. Lefty pitchers seem to get overdrafted because everybody needs more lefties. As a result, more talented righties tend to fall down the board, and the Yanks take advantage of that fact.

I'd rather ask if Sean Henn is still a prospect. I expect better things from Angel Reyes then I do Sean Henn.

We just haven't had any luck with LHP's that's all...

Sean Henn, Abel Gomez, Brad Halsey, Alex Graman...

It's not that big of a deal IMO. Last 4 World Series winners:

    2004:

    Red Sox:

    Curt Schilling, RHP
    Pedro Martinez, RHP
    Tim Wakefield, RHP
    Derek Lowe, RHP

    2005:

    White Sox:

    José Contreras, RHP
    Mark Buerhle, LHP
    Jon Garland, RHP
    Freddy García, RHP

    2006:

    Cardinals:

    Chris Carpenter, RHP
    Jeff Suppan, RHP
    Anthony Reyes, RHP
    Jeff Weaver, RHP

    2007:

    Red Sox:

    Josh Beckett, RHP
    Curt Schilling, RHP
    Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP
    Tim Wakefield, RHP
    Jon Lester, LHP

The most important thing is to have quality pitchers, RHP's... LHP's... It doesn't matter.

Michael Dunn is a converted 1B/OF, so he's kinda new to pitching, and somewhat raw, plus he's 22 years old already, so that's why he's flown under the radar. He has good stuff though, 91-93 fastball (both 4 seamer and 2 seamer), good slider (out pitch) and changeup. Good control (3.13 BB/9 in 184 pro innings). Major sleeper.

Yes, the kid has Francisco Liriano/Franklin Morales type stuff, but his control is below average and he gets rattled easily. I've got my fingers crossed with this one.... Andres Santos as well.

I'd rather they just go after the rightys.

The are having success all over the board with the power arms.

I don't know what is the reason for that or if they would have success with the lefties also if given the chance, but I believe in our ability to develop right handed pitching right now.

No one has good lefties in their system. The whole lefty vs righty thing is overrated in my opinion anyway. Good pitchers are good pitchers no matter what hand they throw with.
