Thread: I have a question about Verizon FiOS TV...

I have a question about Verizon FiOS TV...

I have a question to anyone who works for Verizon, or anyone who knows anything about the issue.

I live in Brooklyn, and I have Verizon Fios set up in my house. The Internet and Phone lines are set up, but not the t.v.

If anyone can help me out, do you know when the City will sign off to allow Brooklyn to have the T.V. portion of Verizon Fios for those who have the package?

I got the package in the summer, and a rep' said around November, but I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

We got Verizon Fios in August and the tv was promised to be available in a couple of months. It became available in November, but we went back to Optimum.

My son has the Fios and he lives in Long Island. The TV seems great! I wish I could get it where I live.

I still don't have the t.v portion of FiOS, and I've been waiting very patiently.

Anyone have any idea when Brooklyn will be getting it?

How fast is cable and how fast is FiOS? My DSL is 6.0 MB/sec.

Optima is only available when you've got Dolanvision, right?

How good is the TV selection of FiOS?

Verizon is still negotiating with the city of NY. No estimate on time of completion. Sounds like a slow process.

Thanks for taking the time to look it up.

Why can't get they get this deal done already I'm getting even more anxious than I already was after seeing the commercial last night. If you signed up for FiOS, and have it installed before (I believe) December 19th, you will receive a free 19" Flat Screen HDTV.

Of course, being in Brooklyn, I'm sure I won't be getting it.

The offer has been going on for awhile already and it was "while supplies last". I wouldn't be surprised if they are out of the tvs already.

In theory. The download speeds have more to do with the site than your provider if you're comparing cable to FIOS, so for example, FIOS won't do much more for you when coming to places like NYYFANS. What FIOS will do, eventually, is be able to deliver some yet unknown services that require bandwidth that cable cannot carry.

I have FIOS, and get 15 Mbps download. Cable advertises 10Mbps, and you're lucky if you get 5.

What you really get is what the site you're on delivers. I always get 10Mbps from Cable, but most sites don't deliver more than 1 or so, that's all you're really getting.

From what I understand about cable though is that you're sharing the line with the rest of the area, but with FIOS you have your own line.

How do you know you're getting 10Mbps?

Everyone I know who has cable and did a speed test got 7 Mbps or less. Some less than 5...

Each hub has a speed test. I get between 9 and 10 every time I check. It is true that FIOS gets you right on the internet backbone directly, where cable shares facilities to each headend which can slow you down. However, the traffic on the backbone all the way to the server will dictate how fast information can be delivered. I would guess that once you get past 4Mbps capability you won't see any noticeable change unless you're downloading some streaming video from a huge server.

Can't tell...could be days, could be weeks. Then, of course, they have to "roll it out" which often takes months to get going.

Also, if you have a wireless internet connection, the speed isn't going to be any faster no matter what service you have.
I learned that the hard way. We have one wired computer which no one really uses and 2 wireless laptops, so the promise of faster internet really didn't mean much to us.

i also heard that if you have FIOS TV each tv needs a box to receive channels....unlike cable where you can just plug the cable wire to the coaxial plug on the back of a tv and get basic cable....this cant be done w/FIOS. is that true?

That is true. In fact, by 2009, all tvs will need a box, even with cable. Some FCC thing.

Re: I have a question about Verizon FiOS TV...

I have another question if someone who may know wouldn't mind answering.

In my house, we have the Triple Play package, which is FiOs Phone, Internet, and T.V. Well, we don't have the T.V. so only the Phone and Internet. We aren't paying for the t.v. since we don't have it yet, but that's besides the point.

My question: Does anyone know if there is a way I can call up Verizon, cancel the TV portion since I have no more faith that Brooklyn will be getting FiOs TV in time for the baseball season to start, and perhaps just get a "Double Play" package of Phone and Internet. That way, I would just get Direct TV and I'll be good as far as getting the YES Network goes (which is one of the reasons we signed up for FiOs TV)

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

I'm confused. How do you have the triple play if you don't have the tv part? You mean when you get the tv part, you will be eligible for the whole package?

partially correct. IF your tv has an analog tuner then you will need a box or DTV converter but as long as your tv has a digital tuner you will be alright and/or if your tv uses a cable card instead of a box.

Re: I have a question about Verizon FiOS TV...

Change of plans. I'm getting iO installed Sunday afternoon. A friend of my moms told her to look into getting iO before getting Direct TV. Needless today, we made the call, and they're coming on Sunday to install it

I couldn't wait any longer for FiOs. I feel like Brooklyn won't be getting it any time soon.

Over the weekend, my parents bought me an HDTV for my room. Nothing major, 19", but it's fine. We are getting a box for my parents room, a DVR box for the living room, and an HD Box for my room. So, when it's installed, I will be able to watch the Yankees in HD. Finally.

I've been waiting for this for years. Dish Network sucked because it didn't carry the YES Network, but now that I am getting iO, I'll be able to watch them. No more Sterling and Waldman for me. Although based on the game threads, I may not be able to handle Michael Kay every night

We've had FiOS for a year; we were one of the first houses to get it in our area. Generally speaking, it's lightning-fast (the reasons why have been explained above months ago). We have a dish so we don't know about the TV package. I'm not even sure that's available up here.

Re: I have a question about Verizon FiOS TV...

I've seen so many Fios ads, I just had to price a package.

I found it to be slightly cheaper then Cablevision, but it had a ton of upfront costs that Cablevision doesn't have.

However, when I filled out the TV part, it said DirecTV. I thought Verizon was cable, not satellite. If it's satellite, it rules it out for us. My cable has gone out zero times that I have seen. I doubt satellite can say that.

Is the $10 a month for HD a flat rate, or is it $10 for each reciever? iO's HD is free, which is nice. How many HD channels does Fios have?

Can anyone compare it to iO?

EDIT: It appears Verizon Online/Phone is available, but the TV is not (Don't know how that's possible) which is why they gave me the DirecTV option.

When Fios first became available here, the tv was not part of it. We already had cable so we just kept it. By the time Fios tv became available here, we were more than ready to get rid of Fios altogether (my internet went out constantly and customer service was very hard to reach).

They have assured me that customer service has greatly improved and hubby is thinking about going back to Fios because our Optimum Triple Play rate has expired and they aren't looking like they will honor it again. Cable is costing way too much right now.

We're only going to switch for all three. I hear rave reviews about Fios and apparently it is cheaper.

I called and asked when the TV would be available in my area and the lady said they don't have a timetable on when it becomes available. Again, no idea how that's possible. I said "So basically it could be available anytime between tomorrow and 15 years from now and there is no way of letting us know in advance" and she said yes.

Seems kind of strange to me....

I think it was only a matter of a couple of months before the tv became available here.

It's cheaper for the most part, but there are taxes added on, which cable doesn't have. And don't forget, it's like cable...the great rates are introductory.

We figured that. It's like $60 a month cheaper. I'm sure it will got up after a year, but we'll make sure that the price will make sense in a year.

It just seems very strange to me that they can't give a time table on availability.

There is a timetable, but Verizon doesn't want their competitors knowing about it so its kept private, and they would never disclose to it to the call center people.

You might want to register at this forum and search/post a question about availability in your zip code. Verizon techs and engineers are on there and they will disclose any info they might have about your area if you ask nicely and they have info about your zip code/neighborhood to share.

So, I am getting Fios as we speak. My parents wanted to switch because it's apparently a lot cheaper than Cable.

As long as I have my YES Network and MLB Network, I am fine .
