I saw on the YES boards that Jeter was on the program today, but the audio isn't up.

I heard him and he was pretty good, I thought. Sounded like he was in good spirits and he answered the questions more instead of talking but saying nothing and beating around the bush. They asked him if he thought Alex would be back and he said straight up that he thought Alex was done. He said Hank and Hal are men of their words so he didn't think that they would go back on what they said to Alex about if he opted out of his contract.
I only heard the last 7 or 8 minutes or so. Don't know when it started.
He also said he had a good relationship with Girardi and that Girardi was a good communicator and good with relating to the players.
"Maybe someday you'll be our shortstop and your number will hang out here (in Monument Park),'" recalled Cashman. "He's the only one I ever said that to, and it's actually going to happen."
Cool. He probably knew A-Rod would opt out.
He said he was talking from his Florida home and had missed the past weeks' news. After that I began to fantasize about who was in his company and missed the rest of what he said.
You can listen to it here...

I totally agree. For the first time in a long time he gave good responses instead of the vanilla ones he usually gives.Originally Posted by Jen19

WOW. Jetes would not say that he wanted ARod back.
Nice to know that the Capn and I are on the same page.

Can you blame him? Over the past 4 years he had his former best friend who stabbed him in the back come to his team, he had to put on a dog and pony show to smile and show how they still like each other, then had to listen to this guy say how much more dedicated he is than everyone else, while also choking in the post season. Then he gets widely and loudly criticized when the former best friend gets booed because he doesn't tell fans to stop it. If I were him I would be skipping down the streets (with my hot super model in tow of course!).Originally Posted by Tifoso
Yes, I hear and agree with you and Lou. Jeter is happy, not to get HIS team back, but to get the Yanks back. Next year the focus will be on the team, what a wonderful fresh breeze that will be....Originally Posted by stephsamps

I know it's early..too early to worry about ZIPS, but ZIPS ignores the emotional component, and I think Jetes and Abreu will have fantastic years in 2008.

I've always heard that Jeter and A-Rod had a falling out of some sort, but what exactly happened? How did A-Rod stab Jeter in the back?Originally Posted by stephsamps

Doesn't get more two faced than this."Jeter's been blessed with great talent around him," Alex says. "He's never had to lead. He can just go and play and have fun. And he hits second—that's totally different than third and fourth in a lineup. You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie and O'Neill. You never say, Don't let Derek beat you. He's never your concern."
I agree. I'm not one of those people who blindly defends Jeter no matter what (and there are a lot of them out there). But how do people criticize him for not getting A Rod's back in the press after that? I know if a close friend stabbed me in the back like that, I would have a very hard time getting past it. Maybe the people criticizing Jeter feel that they could.Originally Posted by teknetic

Thanks for posting this, it was really a very good interview. It didn't seem like he was giving his usual pat answers, as some others have said. I heard parts of some of the other interviews on that show (Torre, Piazza, and a hockey player that I hadn't really heard of) but not that one. Those were good as well. Did anyone hear the Bernie one? It appears to be on the same site so maybe I'll check that one out next.
Given that Jeter had possibly his best year (maybe '99 was better) in 2006 and was the MVP despite how some idiots voted, I'm not sure how much of an emotional component there will be.Originally Posted by hardrain

I don't actually think Jete sounded glad or negative about the Alex question. I think he sounded like he's the Capt and he wanted to toe the front office line. I thought it was a very professional responce.

Sounded that way to me, sometimes, I think people add things that are not there based on what they think they know about a person(s).Originally Posted by mhmajp
I agree as well. I didn't hear anything other than Jeter being the team player. Like always.Originally Posted by mhmajp

How sharp was the shank that Captain shoved in ARod's back? H&H were thrilled with a complicit Jetes pitching the company line to the team and fans.

I thought he sounded relaxed and happy to answer questions. Usually, I feel he doesn't like answering questions and comes off as if he hasn't got the patience, IMO.

It think his appearance of impatience is really shyness. He doesn't like the limelight, unless it's on the field.Originally Posted by krystl

I have always found Jeter to be a pretty good interview when he wants to be. I don't know if he's just so focused during the season or more conscious of his image as "a player determined to win" that he just comes up with these canned answers and statements and is more relaxed in the off-season, but when he wants to he can be pretty engaging and direct.
As far as his "conflict" with A-Rod, I remember when it all took place and it was pretty shocking because A-Rod and Jeter weren't just baseball friends - they were friends. I do think Jeter, could have been more of a teammate to Alex than he was, and let their differences take precedence off the field. There were times when he really dissed Alex, IMO, and as a teammate, no less the captain of the team, he should have been above that. Be that as it may, I'm sure things will be a lot easier for Jeter and most of The Yanks off the field without Alex. Unfortunately, things will be a lot harder on the field without him.
