Yankees manager Joe Girardi is down in the Dominican Republic this week. He had dinner with Yankees senior Latin staff and visited the coaches on Tuesday. This morning (Wednesday) at the Yankees Latin Beisbol Academy, he gave a speech to the Latin coaches and staff followed by an interactive talk with 55 Latin players and eight players from the ‘06 and ‘07 draft. He then watched a Dominican Instructional League game against Toronto and viewed tryouts.

Girardi went down to Boca Chica to meet everyone, talk to the coaches and players, and watch the kids play. I think he also got to watch some try outs. He's much more of an "organizational guy" than Torre is.

Did Torre ever go to any HWB games when Joba, Kennedy, & company were out there?

I dont think it should be required at all. He's on vacation, there should be no demands on his time. However, I do think its a bonus if you have someone like Girardi who does take the extra time

No I don't think it should be required, I just figured he would have some remote interest in seeing the top Yankee draft picks live.

Atacho Has Second Life With Yankees
    By Patrick Teale
    Publisher
    Date: Nov 16, 2007

Signed by the Red Sox out of Venezuela as a strong-armed catcher back in 2005, Alan Atacho found a new lease on life when the Yankees signed him after he was released by Boston and promptly converted him to a pitcher. The 19-year old went 3-5 with a 2.97 ERA in the Dominican Summer League this past season and he is excited about his new career.

They should interview Girardi when he gets back to see who he liked the best.

Another article on my favorite Yankee-to-be, Carmen Angelini. Seems he's getting back into the groove after battling minor injuries during Instructs, and he's looking forward to adding some muscle this offseason.

Does anyone have any thoughts about Ryan Wehrle? My understanding is that he is a high ceiling kid who is very risky based on being dismissed at Nebraska.

Certainly he doesn't have outstanding stats, although he walked more than he struck out.

Hard to make out what they have in Wehrle, he is not a SS and hasn't displayed enough power to start at 3B. My guess is he is going to have to come to ST in his best shape and TAKE a position by impressing everybody that sets eyes on him. Then KEEP a position by hitting the ground running with a hot streak to start the season. He has very little room for error and has to do a lot of things right to get any real opportunity.

Based on ability, maybe. But there's certainly no shortage of suggestions that he lacks commitment, particularly from opposing college coaches.

Baseball America named Austin Jackson as the No. 2 prospect in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League.
    Here is what BA wrote:
After having a breakout season during which he hit .304/.370/.476 across three levels of the minors, Jackson reported to Honolulu and never slowed down. A premium athlete, Jackson finally grew into his tools in 2007. A line-drive hitter with gap power, Jackson’s profile is likely as a No. 2 or No. 3 hitter with the ability to drive in runs. He is an above-average defender in center field, getting good reads and jumps on balls while running quality routes. While he doesn’t always get out of the batter’s box quickly, he’s a graceful runner. “Once he gets underway he’s a plus-plus runner,” an NL scout said. “He’s the best athlete in this league. He doesn’t have that first-step explosion, but this guy is a real crowd pleaser on the bases.

When asked if the Red Sox would've beaten Tampa Bay in the ALCS had Manny not gotten his wish and been traded, Ortiz replied: "Probably. I'm not gonna lie to you."

    7. GEORGE KONTOS RHP
    Honolulu (Yankees)

The Yankees jumped Kontos to high Class A for his first full season, where he had moderate success. The club sent the 22-year-old to HWB to work on fastball command and further refine his changeup. Kontos' fastball sits in the 89-93 mph range, touching 94 occasionally. His mid-80s slider can be devastating at times, and he's also working on a curveball. Kontos still doesn't have enough separation between his fastball and changeup, though he made strides to improve his arm speed on the latter offering.
    he was rated too

Re: Offseason Minor League All Purpose Prospect Thread

From Jim Callis's ESPN Chat (NYY related questions):

James (Bronx): Hey Jim, Would the Yankees be willing to deal Hughes Cano and Kennedy for Santana?

Jim Callis: (2:03 PM ET ) Based on how they wanted to hold onto all their young players at the July deadline, I don't see them giving up all three of those guys. Though something along those lines is probably what it would take.
Ernie (Yorktown, NY): Isn't 5+ years of Hughes, 3+ years of Cano and 6 years of Kennedy for 1 year of Santana a bit rich? The Yanks should hold onto those guys and go after Santana when he's a FA after next season.

Jim Callis: (2:10 PM ET ) Yes it is, I agree, even for a rich team like the Yankees. But there are two flaws in the argument . . . One, whoever trades for Santana almost certainly won't do so without locking him up for the long term. Two, you can wait to go after him in free agency, but he may never get there if someone else trades for him. I wouldn't give up all that for Santana if I were the Yankees . . . but what if the Red Sox could get Santana for Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, Justin Masterson, Jed Lowrie and Brandon Moss? I'm not saying the Twins would jump at that, but if they would . . . wouldn't the Yankees have to think twice about letting him get to Boston?
Joe,RI: Hughes, Melky Cabreara, Al Horne, and Tabata for Santana? Twins get their 4 players, Yankees get their ace, sound good?

Jim Callis: (2:12 PM ET ) If the Twins decide they're trading Santana, and they seem headed down that road, that's a deal that would work for them. And I'd pull the trigger on that if I was New York . . . that's a lot of young talent, but the only guy it would kill me to part with would be Hughes.
Anthony (nyc): Does Austin Jackson project to better than Ellsbury or worse?

Jim Callis: (2:25 PM ET ) OK, we'll move on to some other topics. Jackson has a higher offensive ceiling because he has more power, but Ellsbury is a better athlete, is capable of playing center field (and at a Gold Glove level) and has proven it at higher levels (not to mention the World Series). I'd take Ellsbury.
Phil(Chicago): Does a Melky Cabrera for Sean Marshall deal makes sense for both sides?

Jim Callis: (2:26 PM ET ) No, because Cabrera is worth more than Marshall. The Cubs would do that, I bet, but the Yankees wouldn't.
Jeff (Cleveland): Does Alan Horne have more upside than Ian Kennedy?

Jim Callis: (2:27 PM ET ) Yes, he has better stuff. But Kennedy competes a lot better than Horne, and I'd bet on Kennedy.
(Already being discussed in the Alan Horne thread).

Mike A.(SD, CA): Cueto or Ian Kennedy?

Jim Callis: (2:38 PM ET ) Cueto. I can't fight it apparently -- lightning round.
Jeff (NYC): Austin Jackson or Jose Tabata?

Jim Callis: (2:41 PM ET ) Tabata.
Liam, LA: Who has more wins next season Girardi or Torre?

Jim Callis: (2:42 PM ET ) Girardi.
Doug (NY): Catcher after Posada: Montero or someone not currently in organization?

Jim Callis: (2:48 PM ET ) Someone not currently in the organization. Montero's bat is promising, though.
Bob ( Winthrop Ma): Horne or Betances?

Jim Callis: (2:49 PM ET ) Horne.
Jeff (NY): How about Francisco Cervelli to follow Posada?

Jim Callis: (2:50 PM ET ) Looks more like a defensive guy than a regular to me.
Steve (London): Better farm system: Sox or Yanks?

Jim Callis: (2:53 PM ET ) Red Sox.
Sam (ca): Is Joba in the pen or rotation?

Jim Callis: (3:02 PM ET ) Rotation.

We could match Lester, Lowrie, Masterson, Moss, and Crisp without giving up Hughes or Cano... Lester's a Kennedy level prospect (he might have better stuff but he's never shown it in the majors and is a health wild card, not because he could get cancer again, but because he never fully returned to what he once was), Lowrie is Ajack/Tabata level, Masterson is Horne level, Moss is not a big prospect, and Crisp is Melky level. I dont agree with his "Yankees have to give up Kennedy, Cano and Hughes to match that" idea at all

Can people please ask some meaningful questions instead of just asking if one player is better than another or which system is better.

I couldn't even begin to count how many times we've seen the same damn questions.
