    Favorite Pacino film?

Because if you have one for DeNiro... it logically follows...

[I wish I could've included Devil's Advocate on this list, because I love that one, as well... damn 10-option limit!]

I love Carlito's Way. 10x better then Scarface, yet it gets none of the hype.

Had to go with Godfather but love Serpico and Scent of a Woman, too.

I like him in Scent of a Woman, but overall, I can't stand that movie. It's so sanctimonious and cliched.

I don't think Scarface is even that good. It's ok. Pacino does a good job. But it's not the epic many people think it is.

I think the story was better then Scarface, and it doesn't look all cheesy like Scarface does now. No horrid 80's synthesizer music, over-the-top accent or "new" technology. Just dirty 70s NYC and an equally intriguing character played by Pacino. Same director too.

I had to go with the Godfather I and II, watching his transformation as Michael is to me the best job of acting ever. I love it.

Just watched Scarface last night, overrated movie, but fun 80's movie, Pacino gives a great performance. Then there is Serpico, Carlito's Way, and Donnie Brasco where Pacino gives great performances too...Heat is good but he began his over the top shtick and I am still waiting for him to stop.

Yeah, he's played pretty much the same character the past 10-15 years, but you gotta love a good screaming scene from Pacino.

One of the few exceptions, though, is the indie film People I Know, which was made about five years ago -- the film itself is quite disturbing, but he plays a character *very* different from what we're used to seeing from him these days, which renews my faith, yes, he's still got it.... he just has a crappy agent typecasting him in roles recently.

Exactly why I like his earlier work better! Like Dog Day Afternoon before he became a character of himself.

BTW, I had a Pacino sighting in Santa Monica a few months ago in a cafe where I was eating. He is very nice looking in person.

My vote easily went to Godfather/Godfather II....but he is absolutely brilliant in Glengarry Glen Ross.

  38. #38

    Re: Favorite Pacino film?

Pacino has been brilliant in so many films. Dog Day Afternoon, Scent of a Woman, Heat, Devil's Advocate (imo he carried that movie because lord knows wooden Keanu with his atrocity of a southern accent wasn't going to) but I had to go with The Godfather/Godfather Part II. This was before he began to really yell and get wide eyed alot.

In fact as much screen time as he has in both films he really only really yells and flips out once and that is when Kate tells him what happened to the baby and in that case I thought it was pretty proper.
The loser now will be later to win...

I love Dog Day Afternoon. I did a paper on it in college, actually, and you really didn't have to force me to watch it several times. He really made that character believable and relateable, despite how wacky the situation was.

A couple years back Pacino was doing that play on Broadway with Marissa Tomeii, and I happened to be walking past it one evening just about the time the crowds were gathering waiting for him to arrive. So I waited across the street, to see if I could see anything, for sh!ts n giggles. And this limo slowly crawls by and you see the eyes of about the entire crowd, about 50 people or so, just follow it... is he in there? Is he in there??? Of course not. Some people. He pulled up a few minutes later in the front of a small black SUV, nothing fancy, I think he was wearing a black leather jacket, signed a few autographs, went in. Looked sort of how I expected him to look, I guess. But I was across the street, so it was kind of hard to tell. That's cool you saw him close up.

You remind me of the fact that I also saw him in person years ago, when he was much younger, me too actually! I saw him in the Off Broadway play of American Buffalo at the Circle in the Square and I waited outside with everyone else for him to come out. He finally did but the crowd was so big he actually had a frightened look in his eyes as he tried to navigate his way out of there.

    Re: Favorite Pacino film?

Man, this is like asking me to pick my favorite Sinatra song ... have to say Godfather II because I think I know it word-for-word (like almost everyone else does.) Penguin4, thank you for not including GF 3!!!

Honorable mention: Dick Tracy! Bad Boy stole that show.

Met Pacino outside the Circle in the Square in the late '90s when he was doing "Hughie" with the butler who used to walk on George Jefferson's back (for the youngsters: that's Weezie, Movin' on up.) He was more outgoing than I'd anticipated. I expected this reserved, real serious guy (Michael, I guess!) He had a baseball cap on backwards -- too cute!!

Some goofball next to me says: Hey, you were great in the Deer Hunter!" I wanted to smack that guy upside his cranium. AL looked much younger than on Screen/Mags. TV adds 10+ years on these stars.

I thought it was great. And he didn't play "Yelling Al" like in other movies. Robin Williams was creepy as hell in it too.

I saw it in the theaters and enjoyed it, as well, but it was pure entertainment, as in, there really wasn't much depth beyond what you saw on screen.
