9.1.07 - TB @ NYY: All Pregame Info & Discussion

The typical letdown happened last night as the New York Yankees (75-60) lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (55-80), 9-1. NYY is now 1-4 in games following Boston series. Phil Hughes was knocked around yet again, and now stands at 2-3, 5.65 at the MLB level. In 8 GS, he has thrown just 43.1 IP, and has a 3.98 BB/9 mark. However, before the panic sets in, don't forget that Mariano Rivera was just 5-3, 5.61 in 67.1 IP in 1995, his first year with NYY, with a 4.03 BB/9.

Yankee RH Ian Kennedy (NR) will be making his MLB debut this afternoon against TB RH Edwin Jackson (4-12, 5.51).

Kennedy joins Hughes and Joba Chamberlain as the Yankees' top prospects. Kennedy and Chamberlain where 1st Round picks from USC and Nebraska, respectively, in 2006. Both have skyrocketed to the Yankees this year. Kennedy went 1-1, 2.08 over 6 GS with AAA Scranton this year, and was 5-1, 2.59 in 5 GS with AA Trenton.

Jackson has been a revelation for Tampa Bay in August, throwing to a 2.45 ERA over 33 IP for the month, despite allowing 32 hits and 16 walks in those 33 innings. Jackson has completed at least 6 innings in 8 of his past 9 starts, with 6 QS. In 2 GS against NYY, he is 1-0, 3.00, throwing 6 IP in each game and limiting the Yankee offense to 10 hits and 4 walks in 12 innings.

Ah, nothing like reading TBT's pregame thread first thing on a Saturday morning

Forget yesterday. Let's go Kennedy and let's go Yankees! Your playoff fate is in your hands.

Have to get the series the hard way now. It would be inexcusable to lose 2 of 3 to Tampa Bay. May not hurt them in the standings necessarily, but still.

It may not hurt them in the standings, but it won't help them gain games on Boston and Seattle

Missed opportuntity last night for sure, but understandable after a Boston sweep.

Time to go to work today and give the rookie a triumphant debut.

Possible line up (not so much a guess as to what Torre will do but what I might do)

    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    ARod 3B
    Giambi DH
    Duncan 1B
    Cano 2B
    Melky CF
    Molina C

i like matsui vs jackson over giambi, plus giambi needs a rest. phillips has decent #s vs jackson and does add D, even if giambi has been playing well. posada must be tired but i want his bat in there, we might need it as jackson if he is on is tough. we figure to need his bat less tomorrow with andy on the mound. big game to right the ship and patch the back end of our rotation !!

me too, alot. i just hope it's more as DH than in left until he is fully back from the
knee(s), and even then i prefer damon in left, at least most of the time. i hope joe does not just "hand the veteran back his job". misplays in the field hurt, like in detroit last sunday.

Re: 9.1.07 - TB @ NYY: All Pregame Info & Discussion

    Per Peter Abraham:

    YANKEES
    Cabrera CF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    Rodriguez 3B
    Matsui LF
    Giambi DH
    Cano 2B
    Phillips 1B
    Molina C
    Kennedy RHP (debut)

Pregame chatter: Yanks are facing RHP Edwin Jackson (4-14, 5.51). … This will be the 43rd game started by a rookie this season for the Yankees. They are 21-21 in those games, although their rookie starters are 9-15 with a 6.62 ERA in those games. … A few semi-slumping Yanks: Abreu (2 for 17, 1 RBI in five games); Matsui (3 for 17) and Giambi (1 for 12 in 4 games).

UPDATE, 12:08 p.m.: The Yankees recalled 1B Doug Mientkiewicz and RHP Jose Veras today. To make room for Mientkiewicz on the 40-man roster, OF Kevin Thompson was designated for assignment.
I would have gone with Wilson Betemit at 1B, although Andy Phillips has had some success against Jackson.

Joe Torre challenged Iwamura's bat at a 2-2 count during his at-bat, either because he had a genuine suspicion about its legality, or because he wanted to disrupt his concentration with runners in scoring position. Anyway, his bat was confiscated by the umpires and taken to be X-rayed.

Not long after, Joe Maddon retaliated by challenging the legality of A-Rod's bat.

Apparently, each manager gets one free challenge every game.
