The typical letdown happened last night as the New York Yankees (75-60) lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (55-80), 9-1. NYY is now 1-4 in games following Boston series. Phil Hughes was knocked around yet again, and now stands at 2-3, 5.65 at the MLB level. In 8 GS, he has thrown just 43.1 IP, and has a 3.98 BB/9 mark. However, before the panic sets in, don't forget that Mariano Rivera was just 5-3, 5.61 in 67.1 IP in 1995, his first year with NYY, with a 4.03 BB/9.
Yankee RH Ian Kennedy (NR) will be making his MLB debut this afternoon against TB RH Edwin Jackson (4-12, 5.51).
Kennedy joins Hughes and Joba Chamberlain as the Yankees' top prospects. Kennedy and Chamberlain where 1st Round picks from USC and Nebraska, respectively, in 2006. Both have skyrocketed to the Yankees this year. Kennedy went 1-1, 2.08 over 6 GS with AAA Scranton this year, and was 5-1, 2.59 in 5 GS with AA Trenton.
Jackson has been a revelation for Tampa Bay in August, throwing to a 2.45 ERA over 33 IP for the month, despite allowing 32 hits and 16 walks in those 33 innings. Jackson has completed at least 6 innings in 8 of his past 9 starts, with 6 QS. In 2 GS against NYY, he is 1-0, 3.00, throwing 6 IP in each game and limiting the Yankee offense to 10 hits and 4 walks in 12 innings.
