    Diana: 10 Years Later

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20213789/?gt1=10252

LONDON — I was walking back into the newsroom when a colleague rushed past me and, over his shoulder, turned and said: “She’s dead.”

And I said: “Don’t joke. She can’t be.”

It took a while for me to grasp what had happened. It was too big, too unthinkable.

I can't believe it has been 10 years! I am STILL upset that she was killed.

I remember hearing her brother's speech/eulogy and thinking it was incredibly good. I'd like to hear it again to see if I'd still feel that way.

When I was 8 I got up and watched her wedding on TV, like 4 in the morning(my mom helped me get up, I was so excited).

Then the day of the funeral, I watched it and cried the whole day. I just remember seeign those boys walk behind her casket and thinking about how they are without their mother now.

It's hard to feel bad for billionaires who lose their mother when regular people lose their parents everyday. I'm willing to bet my dad shaped who I am more then she did to her kids and nobody is going to throw him a concert in 5 years.

On the other hand, if she weren't famous, there's a good chance she'd still be alive.

I get what you're saying and I agree with the sentiment, but I don't think even billionaires get a free pass on losing a parent, no more or less sad... and if they can raise millions of dollars (or pounds, rather) for charity in someone's memory because an entire country feels sad for them, I don't care how much of an overhyped media circus it is.

I was too young to see the wedding (think I was a year old), but I remember the funeral vividly. I felt the same - sorrow for her boys who lost their mother so young. She seemed to love them so much and to be trying to teach them to really care for other people, and not just for themselves like most royals. I cried while I watched the funeral that day, too. She was such a big part of their lives.

I remember the night she died. My cousin called us on the phone and said, "Did you know Princess Diana was killed?" I sort of just stared at my dad as he repeated what she'd told him on the phone. I remember thinking, "That isn't possible. She's only 36 years old."

It's tragic when anyone loses a parent or dies at such a very young age.

Yes, the money is for charity, which IMO is a great thing. I agree with all you said.

That was good. I remember it now. I did think he took a few too many digs at the royal family instead of eulogizing his sister, but it was still a good speech.

I agree. If you remember, at the time, there were already very bad feelings between Diana and the royal family. Charles' cheating etc. was already public knowledge. There was quite a bit of animosity going all around, hence the digs at the royal family. He take a few shots at the papparazzi too. The ending got me, even as I listened to it today.

How can you say that? Just because they are rich, those two boys still lost their mother, who was very devoted to them. That's really an unkind thing to say.

Yeah, I guess I thought it was an inappropriate place/time to take the digs, but I understand why he did it. I probably would've done the same, under the circumstances.

And I still can't stand Prince Charles. He cheated on her throughout their entire marriage. His current wife, with whom he'd had a relationship for years, helped him pick Diana to be his wife. Whatacreep.

He even had the nerve to invite her to this 10yr memorial. She declined. Sheesh.

Interesting that Charles did the opposite of what most men do - He married the trophy wife first, then married the old girlfriend.

If your point was it's hard to feel MORE bad for billionaires that lose their parents than ordinary folk, I agree, but I think it's a bit absurd to suggest that money can replace a parent.

Diana did a lot of good for people, too. I'll never forget seeing videos of her sitting by the bedside of a child dying of AIDS, or campaigning to rid the world of landmines. She actually tried to do something worthwhile with her life, to help the unfortunate of the world, unlike the rest of the royal family.

Mother Teresa was a saint IMO and is most certainly worthy of a "Thanksgiving Service" as well, but didn't have the profile of being royalty. Diana had cameras following her every move. One can't fault her for the circumstances of her birth, or for having a charm and personality that drew people to her.

Diana was a very pretty, lovely girl. She did a lot of positive things for people.

    However.....and.....
in the whole scheme of life, there are a lot more important people who influenced more of humanity for the positive - and their lives havent been cut short that long ago, either.

    Where are their memorials?

I watched a recording of the Thanksgiving service they held earlier today. Prince Harry's speech made me cry.

I just can't imagine losing my mom (or mum, as he'd say) at such a tender age.
