Kei Igawa obviously
Well, when Utley went on the DL it was the perfect time for Pedroia top be batting over .340. On my fantasy team, he's an MVP candidate.![]()

He got my vote, eventhough I can't stand him.
How's his elbow? I hope he don't rub pitchers the wrong way for his health's sake. Pitchers are snakes with a long memories.

I know what kind of pitcher Whitey was and kind of person he is. It makes me feel proud to be a Yankee. We're keeping this in the family. (On breaking Whitey's PS consecutive scoreless innings)

The cap's 50, so he doesn't qualify either. Too bad, he'd be a strong candidate.Originally Posted by Mark19

Strong? Man if he did he'd get my vote he's one of the best pitchers in baseball this year. Basically dominant is what he's been except a few outings.Originally Posted by Mr. Mxylsplk

Carmona is not eligible and I don't think Upton is either.
Jeremy Guthrie should win it unanimously.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”

A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).
Upton going into this season had 334 ABs.

Guthrie has been pretty mediocre since the ASB, he had a very nice first half, but his numbers are trending south.Originally Posted by JeffWeaverFan

That's why, IMO, he will get it. He went from being an automatic out for the first two months, to being one of the leagues hottest hitters. Anyone not voting for him is using their vote as a joke. When any player goes from below the Mendoza line to a top 10 league batting average, they need to be considered for any awards their eligible for, IMO. He's got a great bat, and great defense, and doing it when every single person was saying he could never make it as a starter. I'm not just saying this because I've been a fan of Dustin since he was drafted, I'd be saying it about any rookie who turned his season around like he didOriginally Posted by NavyTim

April 20th against Pettitte in Boston ... Pedroia goes 0-2 ... and sees his average fall to .158 . Two men are on base ... when he gets lifted for a pinch-hitter. Sox are then down 5-2. Later in the game the Sox fall further behind when the Yankees add a run in the top of the eighth inning. Yankees up 6-2 in Boston. Somehow the Red Sox collect 5 runs in the bottom of the eighth ... and now are ahead 6-7. Okajima comes in to face the Yankees in the ninth. He walks one batter and strikes-out another, allowing no hits. Okajima notches his first MLB save and lowers his ERA to 1.17! Pedroia is 6 for 38 in the season.
Two days later, Pedroia is back in the lineup for the next game against the Yankees. Sox go down, 0-3 early in the top of the third inning in the evening game. Then history happens. After two outs in the bottom of the 3rd inning ... The Red Sox tie a Major League record with homers in four straight at-bats, and Mike Lowell, part of the historic run, later puts Boston up for good with a three-run shot in the 7th inning ... putting Sox up 5-7. Final is New York 6, Red Sox 7 when Papelbon keeps the Yankees hitless in the ninth inning ... earning his 6th save of the season. Papelbon's ERA is still ZERO! Pedroia goes 2 for 4 in the game with a double -- his average is back up to .190
At the end of the day on May 1st, Pedroia is hitting .172 --- 10 hits in 58 at-bats for his 21 games played. He was pinch-hit for again late in the game. Sox lose game 5-4. Pedroia also has 2 errors on the season.
Since May 2, Pedroia has had 326 at-bats -- accumulating 114 hits = .350 average! His average is now .323 overall. He has only made 3 more errors and is fielding .990 on the season.
If all that doesn't spell out the Rookie of the Year for Padroia ... oh well then ... no justice!![]()

And yet we've yet to bring up a single qualified candidate other than Pedroia. Upton, Carmona, Bannister, and Guthrie all don't qualify as rookies. Actually I haven't checked Guthrie's days in the majors but 17 relief appearances over 3 seasons I'm guessing he maxxed out his 45 days.
Travis Buck might be Pedroia's best competition, but out in Oakland he doesn't get much play. And its an OF vs a 2B with similar numbers. Reggie Wiltis with a .295 AVG and 25 SB on a winning ballclub could draw certain writers to him. Josh Fields could stand a chance with a nice run to end the season. And Alex Gordon has the name value if he can bring his numbers up in the last month. He's been strong in the 2nd half after a horrible 1st. Joakim Soria, Jesse Listch, Kason Gabard, and Matt Garza seem like the best shots on the pitching side. Besides Matsuzaka and Okajima.
In fairness, Iguchi, Takatsu, Otsuka, and Saito all = Not a rookie as well. All were worthy candidates and all saw much poorer showings on the ballots than Matsui. In fact, I'm pretty sure each year saw less and less. Matsuzaka and Okajima are going to be interesting to see, but the relative lack of options (as opposed to recent years) and the big focus on them might slant them, as well as any Boston bias that may exist amongst the voters.Originally Posted by Panamaniac42

Pedroia's clearly been the best rookie in the AL this year. He should win. Who else could you vote for?? Reggie Willits?![]()

So who is your pick then? Because none of the other candidates you listed count. And I have a feeling that Pedroia's .323 average will catch their eye. Pedroia is by no means a slap hitter either.Originally Posted by Mark19

I'm sure Matsuzaka will get the votes. Strike-outs are sexy. Remember Bobby Crosby and Angel Berroa got the RoY simply because they had 20 HRs and stole some bases. The voters seem to ignore patience and consistency. Among the position players, Willits (speed), Cust (power) Fields (power) and Gordon (power and speed) will probably get a lot more votes than they deserve.Originally Posted by hunter05
Pedroia's swing is hard to classify, it is a sort of upper-cut that sprays the ball around. Perhaps if he were closer to 5'9" or 5'10" he would have a more level swing and drive the ball more but whatever he's doing seems to be working for now.

Guthrie has a 3.44 ERA and a 1.11 WHP while pitching half his games in Camden. To say that Pedroia should be a lock to win it when Guthrie has been doing what he's been doing is just wrong.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”
Cust is way, way past rookie eligibility. Too bad, because it would be pretty cool if a guy like him won a ROY.Originally Posted by Mark19

Much as I hate to admit it, ROY should be Woodland's own Dustin Pedroia. What a little...
The Yankees are now 206-1 when Mariano has been asked to protect a four-run lead.
So most Sox fans are at a consensus that Pedroia is more deserving than Okajima or Matsuzaka? From what I know as a Yanks fan I would give it to Daisuke out of those 3 guys, but obviously I'm not watching every sox game.

Camden Yards is a neutral park offensively. Guthrie is 28 years old (and his peripherals suggest that he's not a 3.44 era pitcher). I really can't see him winning the awardOriginally Posted by JeffWeaverFan
Dice-K is 13-10 which isn't a great record for a pitcher being considered for an award.
But he does have the Boston hype machine.
I guess I don't see why he should win over guys like Guthrie and Bannister who are outperforming him in ERA(i know it's flawed) and WHIP. Not to mention they don't have the benefit of a first place club to boost their chances of winning every game.
I know his strikeouts are sexy, but his ERA (which voters still consider) is half a run higher than the other guys.
Though I would rather have him win it than Pedroia, because if Pedroia won, we'd never hear the end of the story about the scrappy Red Sox who became rookie of the year.
It's annoying just typing it.
And don't count out Josh Fields, who has 15 HR in 257 ABs, if he has a hot enough Sept and gets into the .270s (he'd have to bat .330 or so for a month so it would be difficult), he would run away with it.
havent seen the last of Duncan im sure

Shelley Duncan has 44 at-bats. Even if he plays every day from now until the end of the season (which, of course, he won't), he won't get enough playing time to garner any votes.Originally Posted by shotz

Fausto Carmona if he qualifies. He's come a long way since blowing games as Cleveland's wannabe closer.
