Be careful... my family has a huge one in the backyard, under ground. Do you guys get a lot? What do you use for them? My father has been gone since May and won't be back until Sept., so we're curious.

I offer homeless people $3 to get rid of it. Jerome, the last person hired, was stung quite a few times, but he said it was well worth it.Originally Posted by WashingtonYankee

I get the homeless to remove it as well. Its the most effective way, and afterwards, they can eat the honey from the nest

The underground ones are not regular bees I don't think. I believe those may be the cicada killer wasps. Best to call a pest control company for advice if it's bad though.

Thanks.
... occasionally, although more so at work.
.... an aerosol bee spray specifically made to kill wasps, hornets and yellow jackets that shoots a stream of foam approximately 50 feet long.
.... no problem.

Nope. In Texas the only bees that live underground are bumble bees. Honey bees live in structures or in trees. BTW, fyi honey bees are disappearing rapidly due to some tragically unexplained occurrence........Humanity cant survive without the honeybee....Originally Posted by WashingtonYankee

I've read about "Colony Collapse Disorder".... a new worldwide problem of sudden bee colony death and no one is sure why. It's a huge problem because agricultural is so dependent upon bees to pollinate their crops. And although it's not talked about too much, the consequences of this are huge. No more honeybees, no more people... it's that simple.Originally Posted by texasyankee
by the way, in this part of the country most underground nests are Yellow Jackets and they're just scavenger bees that feed off of garbage and they do very little pollinating

Borax. The vet told us to use it for the fleas and then I saw online to use it for crickets so we tried pouring it down the hole from the bees and they have not been back to that spot. It kills the grass in the area but the spots where we have the most issues are around the house/patio so it's not that much grass getting killed off

I doubt those are "bees". If they are nesting in the ground it is more likely they are Yellow Jackets or some other type of hornet. Hornets are more aggressive than bees, so be very careful and stay away from that nest. Call a professional to get rid of them.Originally Posted by WashingtonYankee
One major difference between bees and hornets (and wasps) is that when a bee stings you, their stinger pulls away from their body and the bee dies. Hornets - no so. Hornets and wasps can sting you repeatedly and go on about their lives.

Brooke - We had the same problem. There's a powder that comes in what looks like a ketchup bottle. You squirt this powder into the hole AT NIGHT and it will eventually kill them off. It's not an instant kill like a spray though be careful. I think I got it a a Lowes or WalMart probably.
I think Sevin is pretty effective at wiping them out. Definitely a night time activity though. Preferably a cool night.Originally Posted by Buckeye Yank

No, it's not like hating a black bug. It's yellow and black, so it "ain't all the way black".Originally Posted by Sam18

We get cicada killer wasps every year. They line our driveway and sidewalk up and down with nests. We've tried everything to get rid of them including pouring gasoline down the nests. We've had several people over to get rid of them. They just build another 10 nests the next day. I hate them with a passion. Apparently it's the type of soil in our driveway and sidewalk that attracts them. They suck.Originally Posted by krystl

I would offer my advice on how to get rid of them, but apparently my one episode with bees/wasps was not very successful. I think after almost knocking myself unconscious and then getting hit by my own car, it is safe to say you need not take advice from me.Originally Posted by 4bronxbombers

We used to have them when we lived in the condo. But somehow, I guess they managed to get rid of them because I don't remember it being a big problem. That's one of the nice things about living in the condo...we weren't responsible for pests.Originally Posted by 4bronxbombers
