    The 40-40 Club

The other day during the game between the Yankees and Giants, Davey O'Brien and Joe Girardi started talking about the members of the 40-40 club. They mentioned Bonds and then Canseco, who was first and then Girardi named Soriano. O'Brien said, "No, he didn't make it. He had about 80 stolen bases but only hit 30 home runs." I think Girardi knew he was full of it, but did not make an issue of it.

As I recall, Soriano hit 46 homers and stole 40 bases last season for the Washington Nationals and hit appx. .290. Now I'll look it up to make sure of the average. Okay, the actual stats were 46 homers, 41 stolen bases and a .277 average. So, I don't know why Davey O'Brien is even announcing if he's that far off.

I don't know if they mentioned ARod is also a member of the 40-40 club as well. It's Canseco, Bonds, ARod and Soriano.
The Yankees have been blessed with great players over the years. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and now Mark Teixeira to name a few.

Also, Soriano almost did it with us in 2002, but was stuck on 39 homers, and no matter how big he was swinging, could not hit that 40th.

After Canseco created the 40/40 club, Mickey Mantle commented that if he had known everybody was gonna make such a big deal about it, he would haved asked Casey if he could have run some more.

    That's funny.

I'd forgotten how awful Soriano was in trying to hit that 40th homer. In his last 11 games, he had a .613 OPS with 3 extra base hits, including 3 0 for 5's and an 0 for 4.

Pretty sure it was Eric Davis that Girardi mentioned as doing 40/40 where Brennaman mentioned that he did 30 HR, 80 SB. I forget if they named Soriano.

I can see Casey's face scrunching up at just the thought of it.

He was! I saw him out in Baltimore that last weekend of the season and said hit that last home run tomorrow and he said "I am trying!" He was so sweet.

Mantle was a very fast runner but he had osteomylitis which kept him out of the military. Sliding into second would have been tempting fate.

Are we talking about the same guy????? I'm talking about the Mickey Mantle who hit 344 Doubles and 72 Triples and stole 153 bases. I'm pretty sure I remember him sliding a few times as he built up those numbers. They called him "B & G" in the clubhouse. It stood for Blood and Guts, because by the end of his career, his knees were an absolute mess. That was the result of repeated injuries, not the osteomylitis.

Before his rookie year knee injury, Mantle was among the fastest prospects in the game. Many fans questioned his draft deferment, because he was obviously a horse.

Casey still wouldn't give him a green light. "Tempting fate?" Nah. Casey didn't let him run because he had Yogi and Moose coming up right behind him.

Yes, Mantle had osteomylitis. But, no, it didn't detract a bit from his game and wasn't a consideration in "how" to play him.

Willie Mays has been quoted saying the exact same thing. Mays and Mantle both could have made the 40/40 club easily when they were younger.

I was at the last game of that season in Baltimore, all the Yankee fans (2/3 of the stadium), wanted him to hit 40 and he was swinging at everything.

I think you're right. I had that game on tape and didn't quite hear them right, so I rewound it and still didn't get the name right. I assumed he was talking about Soriano.

So I looked up Eric Davis. Quite a career he had though sadly filled with injuries and other ailments. In 1986, "Eric the Red" hit 27 homers and stole 80 bases just missing the 30-30 club. So it must have been him they were talking about. Sorry for the mistake.

I also believe he had 36 or 37 HRs and 50+ SB in 1987.
238 more runs to score 1000.
