6.17.07 - NYM @ NYY: All Pregame Info & Discussion

    Happy Father's Day.

After being dominated by Oliver Perez on Friday night, the Yankees' (34-32) high-powered offense returned against Tom Glavine on Saturday. The 11-8 victory, NYY's 13th in 16 games, was the result of an offense that registered 15 hits, and a 4-hit day by Captain Derek Jeter. Jeter's 2-run HR in the bottom of the 4th gave the Yankees the lead for good after Alex Rodriguez's 26th of the season, also a 2-run shot, gave the Yankees their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 3rd. The Yankee bullpen allowed just 3 ER over the final 5.2 innings of the game, 2 of which came against Mariano Rivera in the 9th.

Chien-Ming Wang (6-4, 3.49) will face off against Orlando Hernandez (3-2, 2.38) in the decisive game of the Subway Series this evening. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN, starting at 8PM.

Wang has been nothing short of brilliant over his past 6 starts. He has provided the Yankees with 43 IP (7+ per GS), and allowed just just 51 baserunners (1.19 WHIP) while recording 71GO:35AO (2.02 ratio). This will be Wang's first appearance against the Mets.

"El Duque" has been one of the most effective pitchers in the National League this year. Incredibly, Hernandez has allowed just 1 ER or fewer in 6 of his 9 starts this season, and has completed at least 6 IP in 7 of them. In 56.2 IP, he has allowed just 36 hits, 5 HR, and 21 walks with 39 strikeouts with a 1.01 WHIP and a GO:AO of 1.19, which is far better than any other season. In his 8 seasons prior to 2007, El Duque had a groundout ratio greater than 0.86 one time (2005 - CWS).

Hernandez had his worst outing of the season in his last start in Los Angeles: 5.2 IP, 7 hits, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 5GO:8AO.

Wang has not faced any of the Mets' hitters.

We'll win this game, Wang has been awesome lately, which is what I expect out of him.

But you can never count out El Duque, he always gets up for the big game and on top of that he has been great in his starts for the Mets this season.

I expect El Duque to pitch well, but I also think Wang will pitch great. I'll be there so I'm excited.

I feel good about tonight's game. Wang has such a unique repertoire that it should work to his advantage that the Mets have never seen him.

And despite Hernandez's success, the Yankees should be able to hit him.

Really? How come? I never bet against Duque in (percieved) big games. I expect a close game...4-2 sounds about right.

Not that it means anything, but I seemed to remember that the Yankees beat El Duque last year. And they did: 2-0.

And they beat him twice in 2005 when he was with the White Sox:

Our offense is hot and he walks too many.

Don't feel good about this one... The Mets have too much speed and it will bother Wang.

Can't wait until A-Rod gets up, I remember a few years ago when El Duque was with us and A-Rod was on the Rangers that Duque floated a pitch in and A-Rod absolutely crushed it. Hopefully his ridiculous pitches won't make our hitters look bad.

I agree this is the type of team that could give Wang problems breaking up double plays, stealing bases, and manufacturing runs. I don't think Wang will have a bad outing but I don't think he'll shut them down. I think the outcome of this game will be largely based on how we handle El Duque.

Jumping out to an early lead (preferably a BIG lead) is one way to tone down aggressive base running.

I believe he threw him two eephus pitches in a row ... and the second one went about 450 feet.

wang has got to be tough for a team that has never faced him.

His sinker is like Mariano's cutter, probably....you gotta see it for yourself to realize how good it is.

This is from Peter Abraham's column, not his blog ...

This could be the biggest game for El Duque since he and Luis Tiant faced off for the Cuban League title in 1958.

Yankees have to win or they would have lost 2 games on the sox in a span of 3 games. That would suck.
