I don't know why so early in a season writers explain this hypothetical when it means nothing. I have always found is annoying to no end.

It annoys me only when writers use it to make a point they wouldn't otherwise be able to make.
When they're desperately trying to bring a team or player down or hype them up. "If the season ended today, [team name] would be the worst in the league." Or "[player name] would be a Cy Young award winner."
