He was snapping off some beautiful hooks. Probably what caused it. I thought they had it under control
"irritation to right middle finger for josh beckett"
Damn, this is sad, he was dealing. 4 innings, 7K, 2hits, 2 runs
edit
Not blisters, he like..cut his finger. 'avulsion' Wanted to make it clear, not blister problems. Per Remy
BOSTON PITCHER JOSH BECKETT LEFT THE GAME IN THE TOP OF THE FIFTH INNING DUE TO A BLISTER ON THE RIGHT MIDDLE FINGER.
From Yahoo.
Not a blister, according to NESN. A "pulling away of the skin".
Semantics, maybe?
Wow, I guess this is just a chronic condition no matter what they do..

I figured this would happen. I think last year he changed his pitching style to avoid blisters. This year he went back to his old pitching style, which lead to blisters, and that's exactly what happened.
edit: If they now lose Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Lester, and Bucholtz for a month each at the same time, they will know what the Yankees went through.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”

If thats the case, I'll take the blister prone Beckett even if it means we have to put up with this kind of stuff.Originally Posted by JeffWeaverFan
NESN is just stating it in a nicer way. Its a blisterA blister or bulla is a defense mechanism of the human body. When the outer (epidermis) layer of the skin separates from the fibre layer (dermis), a pool of lymph and other bodily fluids collect between these layers while the skin re-grows from underneath. Blisters can be caused by chemical or physical injury. An example of chemical injury would be an allergic reaction. Physical injury can be caused by heat, frostbite, or friction.

Stop with tihs crap, and his name is spelled Buchholz.Originally Posted by JeffWeaverFan

As a baseball fan this is disappointing, it seems like Beckett might have to choose between being the Beckett of last year or the Beckett of this year but always have the blister problem looming.

Also they haven't had Lester to lose either.
He's the equivalent of you #6, as was Karstens for us.Originally Posted by hunter05

No Yankee pitcher has or would had an era as low as Wakefield nor they would have struck out as many as Matsuzaka. Red Sox fans have dealt with plenty of injury, particularly last season.Originally Posted by JeffWeaverFan

So add the other 3 to the list and that would be the equivalent.Originally Posted by hunter05

Thanks I wasn't aware of that.Originally Posted by JeffWeaverFan
Its hard for any Yankee pitcher to have better ERA than Red Sox pitchers when Moose and Wang both started out on the DL
And Hughes went there
Our 1,2,4 and 5 have been injured
You've had what? 0 injuries?
Nor do I. Maybe you didn't understand what I said. What I said was that if they went down, it would be the equivalent of what the Yankees lost.Originally Posted by Nick Day

This is a very discouraging development. Does this thread count as in-game commentary?

Does today need to be a day that we don't have Hansack anymore? We send him down, cause we don't need another long-man, yet... Uhh.. The day after he makes his minor league start, we sorta need a long man
Red Sox claim it's an "avulsion."
Sounds like the fanciest blister I've ever heard of.

I think the important question to ask here is: what's your point? Man this thread went down the tubes pretty quick.Originally Posted by JeffWeaverFan

OK, just woke up the doc-wife from her nap and asked her about it (who is now an unhappy doc-wife).
She said an avulsion is a tear or slice, while a blister is a fluid-filled pocket. While they're different, they can result from the same thing - sensitivity to friction.
Different, but similar.

Which is worse? Avulsion produces some very disgusting google results.
So its serious enough to miss the rest of this start but he'll probably be good to go next start? Assuming the blister doesn't come up again....

No way, I would bet hes going on the DL right away.Originally Posted by CallOfTheCrow

Anyway I'm pretty sure she knows more than me since I'm just premed but atleast from what my professor has taught me a avulsion can result in a blister if its a common problem problem in the patient
I don't know... and I'm not waking her up again. She's seven months pregnant, hormonal and sleepy-cranky. Her last words before kicking me out of the bedroom were "don't come back in here without something chocolate".Originally Posted by hunter05

If he really has some kind of open wound on his finger, it's hard for me to imagine him pitching his next start. If he has a blister and they caught it right away and yanked him to let it heal up, then my guess is he's a maybe.Originally Posted by CallOfTheCrow
Either way, he has notorious problems with blisters keeping him off the mound and this is not a good omen for his Red Sox career.

God dammit, i just woke up, turn on the tv and see snyder pitching when its 3-0 in the 5th. I think hey its becketts start.....NOOOOOOOOO. Knew exactly where to go to figure out what happned. I guess its good its only a cut or whatever not a more serious problem![]()

Avulsion sounds like it could be worse.
Not really. Either way whatever he has he wont be ready in 5 daysOriginally Posted by hunter05
I'd expect him to miss 2 starts atleast if its not bad.
It does. It also sounds like it could be medical-ese for blister.Originally Posted by hunter05

The problem is Beckett's curve. He throws that thing with so much pressure to get that nasty bite on it that it chaffes his skin.
With the early lead, I bet the Sox will play it safe. I assume he is going to miss 2 to 3 starts.
