I definitely don't think it right to seriously wish that on someone. But as a life lesson, I hope that Paris does learn a life lesson from this that her parents obviously never taught her, that she is accountable for her actions. Now should it be 45 days? That's a different story, but I do think some punishment is warranted.

No doubt. But it is sad, though. Her mother's behavior in court only confirms that.

I don't wish any harm on her, but I do hope she does spend some time in a cell. She thinks she is above the law. I doubt she will serve 45 days, but a week would and should do the trick.

I havent read up nor cared to look up the particulars as to why she will or wont be in jail.

I can understand why a judge would be harsh on her or why it is very understandable for people to not care at all that she ends up in jail.

I do however agree with those who have stated that she will be fine.

Re: Paris Hilton sentenced to 45 days in jail

First of all, it is my understanding that she was driving without a license not once but 3 or 4 times. They gave her numerous warnings and made her sign an affidavit agreeing that she knew she was not to drive without a license. Why then did she continue to thwart the efforts of the authorities to make her obey the law. Anyone else doing this would have been put in jail sooner, IMO. Does she think she is above everyone else because she has money or because she thinks she is "hot"? I think not! The authorities threw up their hands and said she has to pay a price. She has probably been spoiled by her parents her whole life and thinks she is special but she is no different than anyone else. Actually, she is better off since she has the money to pay a good lawyer to defend her.

Secondly, she will not be in the general population. She will be in isolation the same way O.J. Simpson and the Menendez brothers were when they were in jail. She will not be anybody's "bitch". And she probably will serve the whole 45 days because they don't let people out early for good behavior on such a small sentance unless the jail is over crowded which they said they have stopped doing.

Jail is frightening. Over 25% of all inmates report being raped.

I certainly don't wish her any physical harm, but I think she deserves a comeuppance.

Not that it will help, since she's been a pampered princess her whole life and she's not going to learn any humility.

I think house arrest followed by community service would be adequate punishment. I prefer alternative sentencing for cases like this. Jail should be reserved for people that are a threat to society or commit more serious crimes. I'm not a big fan of jail being the best way to teach someone a lesson which is what this appears to be.

    I get it. She's rich, she's spoiled, she's a brat, she's a twit. I don't care for her myself.

You do know that CA is facing the country's biggest overcrowding problem, right? Throw her in lockup over the weekend and suspend her license for life.

You're probably right. Having Paris pick up garbage on the highway in an orange jumper for community service would probably do a lot more to impress upon her that breaking the law has unfortunate consequences.

Better yet - make her stand outside the DMV with a sign around her that says: "I drove on a suspended license".

Nothing like shaming punishments for BS "crimes".

I think the problem with community service and suspended license is that I think she's already had both and if I'm not mistaken, didn't do her community service and continued to drive on her suspended license (which personally I find funny, can't she afford a driver?)

Gdn, I'm guessing you don't endorse caning for this sort of thing huh? Haha.

I'd guess they could basically tell her: if you don't do the community service, you will be going to jail. Perhaps they told her that last time, I don't know.

Of course we're all probably being way too optimistic. Chances are Paris isn't going to learn one damn thing about this, regardless of the punishment.

And yeah I can't believe this topic has lasted five pages either.

I think they tell anyone who gets placed on Probation that.

Apparently she was photographed driving again this week. What we're dealing with here is someone who has absolutely no respect for the laws that every day people obey.

To follow up on my caning suggestion, apparently they don't even cane women in Singapore, so no such luck there.

That's why house arrest is appropriate. Besides, I hear ankle bracelets are hot this year.

I missed the Paris Hilton episode on cribs, but I'm not sure placing a wealthy celebrity on house arrest is going to get any sort of message across.

You're undervaluing house arrest. It's not about how nice your house is or how many cool toys you have. It's about losing the privilage of coming and going as you please. It's not meant to be jail and because of that a longer sentence can be appropriate. If Paris could only leave her house to perform her community service for six months, I think it would have an strong impact.

Despite having her licence suspended, Paris was followed by photographers as she lost her way in LA, finishing up in a dead-end even after reading print-out directions.

That comment was in reference to my post about 20% of inmates being forced or co-erced into sex. That is not "willing".

Also, it's pretty despicable to make light of it.

    Here's what I'd do.

[whatever the maximum is], suspended after one week, followed by three months of house arrest and two years probation. If she violates probation - 2 years jail. Simple.

Paris' plea "laughed out of Governor's office":

    http://www.24dash.com/showbiz_slapdash/20329.htm

Paris Hilton's pardon plea to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been laughed out of his office.

The hotel heiress appealed to her fans to sign a petition after she was sentenced to 45 days in jail for driving with a suspended licence and sent it to the actor-turned-politician.

But calls to Arnie's office inquiring about the petition were met with mockery.

The governor's press secretary, Aaron McLear, said: "The petition will be treated no differently than any other request filed to the governor's office.

"The governor only acts in extraordinary circumstances."

That sounds good to me. As you might be able to tell, I'm a big fan of house arrest for non-violent offenders. I know it's expensive but I think it's worth it.

Not as expensive as housing them; leading to a lack of space for violent offenders; having to release some who commit other crimes or having to build more prisons to accomodate them.

Btw, it is entirely possible that she was told by someone that she could drive to and from work. I don't think that's likely; but it's possible. Most states, however, require a special permit for that. Her most recent driving adventure is pure stupidity.

Isn't the expense associated with the monitoring/enforcement of the arrest?

I think we might be talking about different things. I was referring to the cost of incarceration as compared to the cost of putting someone on house arrest.

Yeah - I realized that just after posting the question.

I'm still curious though - what are the tangible costs of putting someone on house arrest, and how do they compare to just throwing them in the county pen.

Have you not heard that expression before? She deserves to be knocked down a few pegs is what it means.

And I agree with your assessment of what her punishment should be, BTW.
Yes, I understand what the standalone phrase "get his/her comeuppance" means. What I was asking is what you meant it to mean in this context and how did you propose she should get her comeuppance.

Well, jail time should certainly accomplish that, but I really don't think that anything will. She's a "victim."

    I get it. She's rich, she's spoiled, she's a brat, she's a twit. I don't care for her myself.

You do know that CA is facing the country's biggest overcrowding problem, right? Throw her in lockup over the weekend and suspend her license for life.
I am basing it on the fact that she ignored the police 3 or 4 times and the fact that I live in L.A. and I know that they are all for throwing the book at people who don't follow the law especially where it comes to DUIs. They are just trying to protect the public from drunk drivers. They actually cut her slack because she was warned time and again and she continued to drive anyway. I'm sure that she thought the whole thing was funny. That is, until they got serious on her a**!! Since I live here I am very happy if the police are tough on drunk drivers. I don't want to end up dead because someone continues to drive when they have a known substance abuse problem.

She was told she could drive to and from work, I believe. But the problem comes in when she is driving at all hours of the day and night and contends that she is on her way to "work". After all, we all know what "work" consists of for Paris.

144 posts in a Paris Hilton thread. What's the matter, no Anna Nicole and Britney news lately to keep you good folks occupied?

What I think is hilarious is that Paris asked Gov. Schwartzenegger to commute her sentance citing "cruel and unusual punishment." This for a 45 day sentance!!! The governor intervenes only for lifers or people who have gotten the death penalty! Get a grip, Paris!!

For Paris, no cell phone for 45 days = the death penalty.

They showed the bunks they use for sleeping in that jail on TV. That alone is like cruel and unusual punishment, even for me, I must admit!

What the heck constitutes "work" for her? En route to a wild club where she collects $200,000 just to show up and be photographed there? I don't think so.

Are there any female "bubbas" in the women's prison? If so, I do hope that she becomes the target of them. Enough is enuff w/that skank.
