From the latest CNN article on this:
"I feel that I was treated unfairly and that the sentence is both cruel and unwarranted and I don't deserve this," she said as she left for a shopping trip with her mother.

She and/or her fans want a pardon from Arnold.

Whoa - when I cut and pasted from the site, there were graphics there -- that didn't go well..let me try that this way :

10 - Asking Martha Stewart for "shower fight" tips
9 - Meeting with Revlon to market signature delousing spray
8 - Looking up recipe for making Cosmopolitans in the toilet
7- Attending Tampa Bay Devil Rays games to get used to solitary
6 - Seeking permission to videotape her conjugals
5 - No number 5 -- writer too upset by verdict to write a joke
4 - Seeing what Prada has in orange jumpsuits
3 - I dunno -- getting drunk and acting like a tramp? Seriously, young people -- keep it clean
    2 - Telling herself, "Heck, 45 days? That's not even a month"
1- Giving guards list of how she likes to be searched

I'm with you. I was going to comment yesterday, but decided to let it lie. I don't get the anger toward Hilton. Ridicule, absolutely, but is wishing for her to get a good beating in jail the right thing? Jail is not a pretty place and it used to be the last resort for those that cannot be rehabilitated in society. She really doesn't belong in jail.

Jail is frightening. Over 25% of all inmates report being raped.

Do you know what is the most frequently charged offense? Failure to Appear.

It seems that when people have court dates, they are more often than not late, or just don't show up. Rich or poor.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on there Tigger. Who's wished for her to get a good beating? It certainly isn't "a lot of people posting in this thread".

The vast majority of posts here have been of the ridicule variety, IMO.

Let's not forget: the sentence comes after a DUI charge and for driving down Sunset Blvd at 70mph without her headlights on. A modicum of meanness/derision is not undeserved.

Wishing her a "beating" in jail is absurd. But she is basing her appeal based on that she provides "beauty to those who lead a mundane life". WTF? So she's saying that because she is "hot" then she shouldn't go to jail for driving drunk. Wake up and smell your latte Paris!

I am as apathetic as you can get towards any of these celeb-u-tants (or however you spell it). But she absolutely does belong in jail and the sentence is appropriate for the crime. You and me would get similar sentences for the same crime. Multiple offenses for DUI's and reckless driving should land someone in the slammer, IMO. And let's be honest here, she isn't going to be in gen pop. She's going to be secluded for the most part, and more than likely, she will not serve the full 45 days.

Uh, she was driving without a license. She has no history. She absolutely is going to be in gen pop. There's no need for her to be in PC; they're not going to put here there. 45 days is excessive (in fact, the proportionality argument is being made). Do I think she's a spoiled t**t? Yes. Should she spend 45 days in jail? Probably not. Is it okay for people to be happy about this? Nope.

I counted four people in this thread joking about it. I'm sure the "interweb" is filled with people feeling the same way.

Hey, if it worked for the really hot schoolteacher accused of having sex with her student, then why not Paris? Oh wait, she's not hot. My bad...

She has no priors? Are you sure about that?

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that multiple articles have stated (linked in this very thread) that she will not be in gen pop. I didn't say anything about PC, more than likely, her own cell, but not to be considered PC.

As far as people being happy about it, so what? I didn't realize you were the moral compass round these parts.

Obviously if she's driving on a suspended license then she has one prior. That's not what I'm talking about. I mean offenses other than the one that lead to her losing her license.

So it is your contention that she is going to be locked in her cell for 45 days, not in gen pop, but not in PC....if that's the case, then I'd definitely be arguing that the sentence is harsh. That's torture.

As for your snarky comment about the moral compass, you posted your opinion, I posted mine. How's your moral compass looking?

I wasn't intending to be snarky, hence the smiley at the end of the sentence. Sorry if it offended you.

I disagree that the sentence is harsh. IMO, it is suitable, but again, I'd be willing to wager she doesn't do more than 30 days.

That was not the inference at all. Rather the fact that there are multiple levels of security at the same prisons. I don't think she'll be with the heavy hitters in maximum. That's all.

    No harm, no foul.

I have a problem when people think jail is a walk in the park. It's not. (Not you personally, just generally)

No, she won't. That doesn't mean there's no chance she'll be attacked (or that it's cool that it will happen).

Yea there's definately a chance, but i don't know about 25%. I'm sure prison officials understand that if anything were to happen to her inside, they would have a lot of problems... Much more so than a typical inmate. I think she'll be OK, and I don't endorse violence against stupidity, but of course there's a chance when dealing with criminals.
You'll just say the worst of me with the hope they'll understand

I'm trying to find the report. I was wrong about 25%. It is 20% of male inmates are forced or coerced into sex.

    Here it is:

I thought there was a more recent one, but I can't find it. Anyway, do a blog search on google or one on technorati and you'll find the most recent posts.

    Here's another website.

This is a real problem (not that it would likely happen to Paris, but the point being that it's no laughing matter)

Re: Paris Hilton sentenced to 45 days in jail

Btw, this is (in my opinion) the best take I have seen on this thus far:

    http://federalism.typepad.com/crime_...al_justic.html

Parents are supposed to provide guidance and offer accountability. When that's lacking, people do dumb things. Thus, Paris Hilton.

Hilton was driving on a suspended license. She could have afforded a private driver. But throughout her entire life, no one told her, "No." No one offered her any accountability or guidance. Two human animals spawned her, but she didn't have parents in any meaningful sense.

While it's hard to feel sorry for someone like Hilton, I do. Her parents must have stepped out of her life at an early age. "Here's the credit card, doll. We'll be skiing in the Alps!" And so the criminal justice system has stepped in.

This would be the thing to keep in mind, before serving up the sanctimony. There's a large divide between cracking jokes about Paris ending up in jail and treating prison rape as a laughing matter.

From what I've read, she's not going to be in the general population. Most people are also expecting she won't serve the full 45 days (more like two weeks). Of course, that assumes she behaves herself inside. I'm not sure she's capable.

I think you misunderstand the use of the verb "joking". They weren't pretending to be make light of it; they were making light of it.

Christ on a bicycle. You really think the people posting in this thread wouldn't recognize prison rape as a serious problem, because they're cracking jokes about what might happen to Paris???

I've learned not to hold people posting on internet forums to a very high standard.

Edit: It's also not only about rape; but about violence and the general idea that prison is not a difficult place.

While I would never wish harm of any kind on a prisoner, I would hope it would be difficult for them. Difficult in the sense of lost freedom and lost ability to do things they want to do.

It's "jokes" like "I hope someone makes Paris her b*tch" and "I hope she is put in a cell with hardened women and they teach her a life lesson" that irk me.
