Chicago gets US bid for 2016 Summer Olympics

Just announced: we beat out LA. Decision by the international selection committee to come late 2009.

Oh man, if Chicago gets this I am going to be very, very busy for the next few years. I sure hope we do - and not just for the work - Chicago is a great town for an international event.

Be good to get the Olympics back in the U.S. Now we just have to clear the big political hurdles of getting the IOC to pick Chicago.

Chicago is a great place. Go there for business maybe once a year. Hopefully the city gets it.

I like that Chicago got the bid. LA already hosted the Olympics in 1988...give another city a shot...

Why can't they just keep bidding on NYC until they finally get it?

Huh? Don't they usually bring a city tons and tons of money?

    It isn't so clear cut.

That's what I'm hearing. The profits, if any, aren't that great especially since it happens during our tourist season and hotels are already packed. Not to mention the costs and headaches for security.

The main benefit is exposure but Chicago is already a world class city.

On the other hand, I won't mind renting my basement for two grand a week if the games happen here!

Why will you be busy? Training for the decathlon or something?

No... I would be heavily involved in public-private financing of the venues.

Exactly - anyone arguing it would be an economic surge for the city needs a little refresher on displacement effects. At best - at best - its a wash.

We've already had it twice. Lake Placid in '32 and '80 -- the latter having the most memorable Olympic victory in American history.

Not to mention the inevitable cost overruns. Daley already said taxpayers won't foot the bill.

The only ones getting rich will be Daley's pals who will get a majority of the construction contracts.

But what the heck, at least the Ryan construction and Red, Blue, and Brown line rehab projects should be complete by 2016.

They do seem to be a lot of bother in a lot of ways but I went to Atlanta in 96 and, in spite of it being around 92 degrees every day and I was 6 months pregnant, it was still one of the best and most memorable experiences I've ever had. There is nothing quite like watching a medal ceremony and seeing the Stars and Stripes being raised to the national anthem as the winner gets his medal.

I just got finished watching an HBO special on that. Cried like a baby, again. It's a great story that never gets tiring to watch. I'll never forget it.

Lake Placid still has a great atmosphere 27 years later. It was a perfect setting for such an epic game.

Wow, 1932, that's not that long ago lol.

I'd care that they had them twice if I had actually been born yet and was old enough to watch. I want New York City to get them, I'm still pissed they didn't.

I'm a little split on this one. I'm glad Chicago got it over LA, but I still want NYC to host the Olympics. Anyone know if NYC is shooting to be the US Nominee for the 2020 Olympics?

If not, I'll definitely be rooting for Chicago to get it in 2016.

I thought NYC tried for the 2012 games?

Yeah, the special interests wrecked the west side stadium idea and effectively destroyed the bid before the voting.

That was a white elephant plan (I worked on that project in my old consulting job). The city was grossly inflating the impacts, benefits and type of events the stadium could support. It fell apart under its own weight.

I'm glad it is not going to be in L.A. We have enough traffic here as it is.

That's another reason why I'm not overly excited if Chicago gets the games. I'll have to take a major detour to/from work since most of the festivities will be along the downtown stretch of Lake Shore Drive. Not to mention the proposed site of the olympic village is next to my favorite beach and it will be security hell and congestion getting there.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I'll deal with all the headaches as long as I rent my basement for two grand a week.
