Frankly, I think this 5-game skid and the fact that they have Dan Johnson hitting cleanup will tip the division in our favor.

They don't have anyone batting .300, and just a couple of guys over .270. Add to that their 'dead arm' SPs, and I think they are going to fade fast.

It is hard to believe that this team came so close to being nohit again! However, you have to tip your hat to Morrow who has probably pitched the greatest game he will ever pitch in the majors. He looked like Nolan Ryan and Clemens he was so dominate.
David Price is insanely good.. A lefty starter throwing 100mph
Niemann and Davis on the DL. Hellickson is better than Davis so they didn't really lose much, but Niemann is gonna be tough to swallow.

Hellickson has one major league start. He is more talented than Davis and looked better....but it's a stretch to say he's better at this point. Most ML pitchers struggle at some early point in their careers, no matter who they are.
Davis posted a 122 ERA+ during last year's stretch run. I'll take the over on Hellickson putting up a 95 ERA+ from now until the first week of October.

Absence of Rays trolls. We had one earlier in the season but he scampered off during a slump and hasn't resurfaced.
I think if the Yankees needed them to fail in order to get into the playoffs, there would be more chatter and discussion here.
Right now it just looks like they'll cross the finish line pretty much together.
Less drama than the two teams fighting for one spot.

Why? So Navarro could lay down a bunt and advance the runner to second with nobody out. Bunting in the situation is defensible given the run scoring environment. Navarro is among the team’s more skilled bat handlers while also being the best backstop defensively. Maddon traded the designated hitter spot to move Navarro behind the plate in the ninth.
They mention some other things in the article, but I especially liked pinch-hitting Hawpe against Gaudin. As we all know, Gaudin is caca against lefties, and that looked like it was going to end poorly for us.
also, the Rays are blessed with a lot of guys that can play multiple positions (This is ultimately caused by the intense level of competition and talent in their minor leagues; guys have to learn multiple positions in order to have a chance to advance. Many of them also have the natural talent and athleticism to do it.). This allows for really splendid double switches for handedness at the plate that makess the late innings real interesting watching.

They can't hit, but they can pitch. They've had a lot of 1-0, 2-1 games.
It's on the high side but not that un usually 5 teams have played at least 50, 1 run games.
The Yanks are acutally an oddity on the low end, their 33, 1-run games is 4 fewer than the next lowest AZ who has 37 then Pit with 41. Most teams are somewhere between 45 - 50 at this point of the seaosn looks like.

This is why Rays fans are lame. I know a transplanted NY'er who was a Mets fan/Yankee hater. He now is a Rays fan and has given up on Los Mets. Anyway, he wrote to me telling me he cant wait for October baseball so he can sit in the Trop with his flip flops on watching the Rays win it all, while I suffer in the cold October weather. Flip flops to a game? STFU!!!

this is the case with many of the fans I've seen/met in all my trips down there. Some Red Sox, Met and yankee fans say they are their second team because they can go see a lot of games cheap but I'm not sure how that works..
you can tell your friend that they didn't even get 30,000 fans to come out for the Price/CC matchup..even Maddon though that was bad...
btw - it must eat Maddon up to hear all those cheers there for the Yankees when he's already disappointed at the fan turnout.I know he's probably used to it but there wasn't really a rivalry between the two teams before...

The are a little better but not crazy better.
According to baseball reference they have a team OPS+ of 106 which isn't that far behind the Yanks 108.
What they do well is steal a lot of bases (1st in the league with 160) and hit enough HRs (145) to drive people in.
Where they are really good is not giving up free passes. They've allowed 173 fewer walk then they have received.

B-ref had some kind of overhaul with YS park factors - all the hitters OPS+ from last year went down, while the ERA+ for pitchers went up. I guess they figured YS is a bigger hitter's park than they originally thought.
I'm almost positive CC had an ERA+ of 130 last year...now B-ref has him at 138. I'm also almost positive Tex's OPS+ was over 145 but now it's at 140.
I checked CC's BR page yesterday night and it's definitely not the same as today.

Baseball Reference updated all the park factors, WAR numbers, etc. are all different too.
Javy Vazquez's 2010 non-Cy Young season: 4-10, 7.15 ERA, 140 Ks, 170 IP.
HA, Cano was their WAR leader last week. He's not even top-5 anymore.
I hate when BR does a database update, something usually gets screwed up, I'm guessing the numbers will change again in a day or two?
