    Nutritional Supplements

Is it just me, or does it seem like every week, a new study comes out either touting or disparaging them? The latest on the negative side relates to garlic, and certain anti oxidants like vitamins A and E.
I do take supplements, mainly because my eating habits are not consistently good. Besides a multi-vitamin, I take extra C, E, Omega-3, and garlic..and it really seems to help protect against colds, which I was always susceptible to in the past.

It's annoying as hell. I'm sure if you did enough research you could find something wrong with anything and everything.

Agreed. Didn't they recently come out with something about vitamin C causing arthritis?

Whatever, I'm sticking to my multi, C and Omega 3s.

You are so right! These studies are done by drug companies. Whether people realize it or not they have been engaging in an all out battle to destroy the natural supplement industry for a long time now. And they have a way of skewing the outcome in their favor. They would rather we get sick so that we need to take their over the counter drugs rather than prevent illness and not have to take those, not to mention prescribed drugs that are overly prescribed. At least for me I take Vitamin A, B Complex, C, D (which they have shown prevents cancer and heart disease), E, garlic (which will kill infections), fish oil, and Calcium/Magnesium among other things. I have not been sick at all this whole winter.

An excellent company for supplements is Garden of Life. They have a website. I think it is: www.gardenoflife.com

Their products are of excellent quality and they work as they are supposed to. Most of the supplements I take are from Garden of Life but I buy them at a discount on the web because they are costly.

I take a multivitamin with extra calcium, and esther-C. I haven't been sick at all except for a nasty sinus infection a month or so ago. I think the esther-C really helps your immune system.

As long as we're listing websites, my favorites are:

    www.DPSnutrition.com
    (Best prices, fast shipping)

    www.SupplementCentral.com
(Decent prices, VERY fast shipment, wide selection)

Now that you mention it, if anyone intends to take a vitamin C supplement, make sure it's Ester-C, which is better and easier on the stomach than regular C.

    Re: Nutritional Supplements

You have to be careful with supplements. They aren't regulated by the FDA and they can throw in whatever they want. The amounts of the things listed in each pill don't even have to be accurate. From what I understand, most of the time they aren't accurate. Be sure to find a reputable company.

You can say that again. I only take Ester-C. I can't tolerate the regular C.

I haven't either and I take nothing.....but I rarely get sick. Everyone tells me I should take vitamins - I just have no idea what to take. It's overwhelming trying to figure it out.

    Well, yes and no.

Taking them concomitantly (ie, you're "on" both)--yep.

I usually tell people to take multivits on a full stomach (even though this will decrease iron absorption--see below) to prevent stomach upset.

Take iron on an empty stomach (1 hour before a meal)

I take a multivitamin, Omega-3 and CoQ10 which I have no idea what it does other than my doctor told me to take it.

    Not true, amico mio.

Look at your multivit bottle: it contains both

I did a google search and I found this.... "If you take both Vitamin E and iron supplements, take them at different times of the day. Inorganic forms of iron (such as ferrous sulfate) destroy Vitamin E. Organic iron (ferrous gluconate or ferrous fumarate) leaves Vitamin E intact."

Perhaps that was what I was recalling. I thought I had remembered hearing some caveat about taking them both together.

I realize that this is more than a year old, but it should be said anyway. The reason every new study says that supplements don't work is... well... because they don't work. If you eat a moderately healthy diet, you should be getting all the vitamins you need.

I am like a walking encyclopedia on what supplements are good for what ailment. Friends and family call me with questions about supplements. I believe that they do work. There is a book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch which tells what to take for whatever is ailing you. Anything from an earache to cancer they tell you what supplements could benefit you. It is very informative.

I have been taking supplements for many years and I was not sick very often when I began but I do believe it helps to slow the aging process and prevent major illnesses when our bodies get the proper nutrients.

My ob/gyn friends have told my friend what to get (at a CVS type place). I'll ask her and get back to you. They all swear by it!

Get Remifemin which is Black Cohosh Root. The brand is Enzymatic Therapy and it worked very well for me. It is important to buy from a good company, some supplements are cheaply made and don't get results. They also make a couple of other products for this purpose, I forget the name of the other one I took but the Remifemin worked the best. You can find these products at The Vitamin Shoppe or any other health food/vitamin store. The prices at The Vitamin Shoppe are very reasonable.

I just went on some sports supplements. Vitamins in the morning, creatine and protein. I have just started and I am kind of feeling more regular.
