SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 18) - An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it, a group of astronauts, engineers and scientists said on Saturday.

They will simply issue a proclomation declaring the asteroid is harmful to human life and wait for it to change direction.

This sucks. Hopefully we'll have some badass laser that can knock it away from us by the time this comes around.

I saw something about this on Discovery Channel. They had some astronomists and physicists on who said that unlike the movies where you can just shoot the asteroid into little pieces and everyone is ok, in real life blasting it apart would only cause for it to do more damage. In order to prevent damage, scientists would have to find some way to alter it's path.

The other thing the show said is that the 2036 asteroid wouldn't make contact with Earth, it would only come scarily close. The same asteroid, however, would reapproach the Earth something like 9 years later at which point it would make contact. And don't think that it'd be cool to stand out on the beach and watch it plow towards the planet as you awaited your final moments. The experts said anyone who could see it approaching would likely burn to death as it broke through our atmosphere because the heat generated would be so great that simply being within the range of a few miles of it would make that possible. Then after it made it impact it will likely wipe out most of the Earth's population, whether it be with the massive tidal waves, earthquakes, or volcanic activity that it would cause to occur. For the lucky few who would survive, they'd have about a month until all plant life on Earth would die as a result of getting no sunlight due to the fact that the amount of dust and debri created from the asteroid would flood the atmosphere and create a "nuclear winter" that would last for years. Once the plant life died off it would only be a matter of time before the few animals who survived would be unable to sustain themselves and they'd die too. The only lifeform that would survive would be small organisms and then we'd have to wait millions/billions of years for evolution to repeat itself. However by that time the sun might have already burned out and life on Earth will cease to exist.

    Have a great day everybody!

I think the UN just announced that there will be economic sanctions against the asteroid.

They'll be sending inspectors in after it hits.

arnt we suppose to die in 2012 according to the mayan calender?? plus, im sure the government will never release info about astriods that will most likely to hit earth because it will cause mass hysteria and chaos.
Is that what happens to us? A life of conflict with no time for friends… so that when it's done, only our enemies leave roses.

I bet the asteroid ends up being the size of a chiwawa's head once it reaches the ground like Homer once correctly predicted.

Not to worry. The world is supposed to end in 2012 anyway because that is when the Mayan calandar ends. So I wouldn't worry about it.

The fire alarm went off in the movie theater when I was watching that movie and no one got up to leave except me.

I didn't want to take a chance on my obituary citing my cause of death as stupidity from not leaving a Bruce Willis movie when the fire alarm sounded.

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel about what would happen if an asteroid or meteor the size of Japan crashed into the Earth. Not only would the Earth be covered in debris for years, blocking out any sunlight, the whole world would literally be on fire for about a year. Even the rain forests in South America, and the North and South Poles. The impact would have the power of thousands of nuclear bombs being detonated at once, and would produce heat comparable to the surface of the sun. The impact would shred apart the earth's crust at the point of impact, sending it flying into orbit, only to crash back into the earth, burning up in the earth's atmosphere. The water in all of the oceans would quickly evaporate. It would take years until it gets cool enough again in order for water to form in the clouds, and then the oceans would fill up again. The only organisms that could survive are the ones that were two miles below the earth's surface, where the temperature stays at about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Deep enough to be away from the extreme temperatures near the earth's surface, but also shallow enough from the high temparatures of the inner earth.

There is a good chance that this is how the dinosaurs died.

    From Wikipedia:

Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the "keyhole" would likely be missed and on August 5, 2006, Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 Torino impact hazard scale. As of October 19, 2006 the impact probability for April 13, 2036 is estimated at 1 in 45,000. An additional impact date in 2037 has been identified, however the impact probability for that encounter is 1 in 12.3 million.

Despite the fact that there is no longer any significant probability of an Earth impact, The Planetary Society is offering a $50,000 prize for the best plan to put a tracking device on or near the asteroid ([1]).

"Maybe" saving the world. There is a 44,999 in 45,000 chance that your idea wasn't even the reason for continuing the human existance. $50K for saving the world, $20 million for playing baseball. Seems right.
