    Bonderman signs $38M extension

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_yl...v=ap&type=lgns

Bonderman, who would have been eligible for free agency after the 2008 season, gets $4.5 million in 2007, $8.5 million in 2008 and $12.5 million in each of the following two seasons.
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."

Good move by the Detroit front office. He would have commanded much more than that on the open market in 2008's off season, assuming he stayed healthy. But he's set for life and still gets to hit free agency at a decent age.

This is a good move by the Tigers. It would be an even better move if Bonderman could become the frontline starter everybody thought he would be by the time he gets paid $10+ million a year.

and yet another pitcher held onto. This is why it is now even more important to bring up pitching from within.

He should have a massive year this year. His 3.31 FIP at age 23 was behind only Johan at 3.15 and Webb at 3.20. Of all qualified players, only these players had their defense convert outs at a worse rate behind him:

    Joe Blanton
    Rodrigo Lopez
    Zach Duke
    Paul Maholm
    Joel Piniero
    Curt Schilling
    Andy Pettitte
    Jake Westbrook
    Brad Penny
    Mark Redman
    Paul Byrd

That is out of 77 pitchers.

Good for the Tigers. I like this trend of teams like Milwaukee and Minny and SD and now Det locking up their young pitching talent.

With the way the markets been I nearly choked when I read that. He's a realy young fireballer who's only going to get better. I think detroit got a real steal for him.

I like it too, especially now that Cashman has more control and has already begun stockpiling young pitchers. Hopefully enough of them will pan out so we won't have to rely on FA to build our staff in the future.

Indeed. I think the Yankees are finally grasping that concept.
