The whole making the real estate lady beyond bizzare and the sideplot with the guy and the class action lawsuits was just too annoying for me. For such a cool premise, I guess I was expecting an X Files type story, not a Kubrick-esque too-cool-for-the-room one.Originally Posted by Hitman23

Anyone read this? I hear it's a great book. The dog on the cover is so handsome!

I do agree his writing is a little out there. All of it is. Invisible Monsters was a little strange as well. I love his POV on things I guess that's why I enjoy his books so much. I always expect a far fetched story.Originally Posted by RhodyYanksFan

I just started reading The Echoing Green by Joshua Prager. It's about the famous shot heard round the world....Bobby Thompson's homerun that won the pennant for the NY Giants in 1951. So far it is pretty good and is very detailed!

My Experiences in an Adult Theatre by Pee Wee Herman.

Whenever I can fit in a few free minutes I have been reading "Manhunt: The Twelve Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer". Great book. It's an amazing story.
I bought it at an antique shop. Imagine that..I just finished reading his All My Octobers book with a foreword by Bob Costas not too long ago. Mantle was indeed a student of the game...Originally Posted by TinoFan84

You can read the first chapter here.

wow...glad I could help. I've had the good fortune of meeting with LTC Nagl and corresponding a bit with him. He had a good interview on NPR the other day. I think I have the link somewhere, I can PM it to you if you want it. If you're really interested in counter insurgency, then the defining source from what I hear is a book called called Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice by David Galula and it just came back into print. I haven't read it yet, but it's on my Xmas list.Originally Posted by penfold

It doesn't have a lot of books that I want to look up, but it gives a general idea of what kind of book it is (what the main character does for a living, what "type" of book it is, how much of the book is action, how much is dialogue/problem solving, and so on) so that you can try to determine whether it is a good fit for your tastes. It also has several reviews for each book.
For instance, here is the page for The Da Vinci Code, which I'm sure a lot of the people here have read:
http://www.allreaders.com/Topics/Info_17502.asp
I wouldn't read it if you don't want a spoiler, as there is a bit of information there that might spoil part of the book for you (which usually isn't the case on the site), but you can look up other books you've read.

That is definitely going on my list of books to read. I just finished "Cut and Run" by Ridley Pearson...started another Pearson novel today, "The Art of Deception".Originally Posted by penfold

That does look good. It sounds like my type of book. I hadn't heard of it. It seems that it's available at my library, so I'll put that one on my list for next time I get books.Originally Posted by penfold

Well, I'm only about a third of the way through it, but it's been pretty educational so far. I'm pretty solid in most aspects of my game, playing my position, representing my hand, knowing when to slow play vs when to lay the hammer down, etc, but my weakest link has always been the math. I can figure out the general odds of making my hand easily enough, and pot odds are straight forward enough, but implied odds? Effective odds? I was pretty much ignorant of what those actually were, never mind how to figure them or apply them. It'll take more study and practice, but I feel like once I get a better grip on those things and how they all interrelate it'll make it a lot easier to make correct decisions in those times when you feel like you could go either way.Originally Posted by Hitman23
Essentially the book emphasises how to approach the game in a more...I dunno, scientific? way. Proffesional, logical, and businesslike could all fit, too. I'd always heard that Sklansky was one of the premeir poker writers/theorists (along with Mike Caro) and 10 chapters in I now know why.

I'm reading "Forty Signs of Rain" by Kim Stanley Robinson and it's pretty slow so far. I'm reading this book because I liked his Mars trilogy books: Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars. They also had a lot of slow moments with technical gibberish but I found them really interesting. Hopefully things will pick up a bit in this book soon. I started reading it because the sequel sounds interesting.

I loved that book! I am not currently reading anything, but will probably start "Redneck Woman, Stories from my Life" by Gretchen Wilson tonight - I got it for Christmas from my bosses along with two NASCAR books (one of which I finished and the other one I flipped through). I went to put "Redneck Woman" away last night and looked at a little of it and it actually looks pretty good, so I may as well read it.Originally Posted by IronCaballo4
