If I'm thinking of the same guy, I think his wife died on the operating table during an emergency appendectomy, back in the late '70s or early '80s. She'd just given birth and got appendicitis.![]()

I thought this said Juan Uribe, and I just froze. Still a shame though. Never seen Jose play, but R.I.P.
Rest in Peace.
He was truly the player to be named later.
If I had 3 wishes... One of my wishes would be to make a select few of you Pirates Fans.
Especially sad to leave behind 14 children.
This is so very sad. I too thought it was Juan Uribe when I first heard it.
The family's been through so much. May they somehow find strength to get through this too.

September 28, 2008 - the day the HOF got a wake-up Moose call.
More sad news for baseball this year.

I'm glad someone else remembered that.Originally Posted by JDPNYY
For those who don't remember it, the news story didn't do it justice. All they said was, "He began his career with one season in St. Louis, when he was known as Jose Gonzalez Uribe." No, he wasn't; that's like saying #51 is "known as" Bernie Williams Figueroa. Uribe was his mother's maiden name - which is placed after the surname in Spanish names - but he was known simply as Jose Gonzalez.
But when he was traded to San Francisco, he announced that since there were so many baseball players named Gonzalez, he would be known as Jose Uribe from then on.
And that's how he became "the player to be named later."

Sorry to hear that! RIP
