    Name Days

Does anyone here come from a culture that celebrates Name Days or Feast Days?

I thought of asking this because today is my name day - Saint Barbara (or Santa Barbara as she is known in Puerto Rico).

My Italian family always celebrated name days. My mom sends cards to family members on saints' feast days - St. Joseph, St. Anthony, etc.

We celebrate St. Joseph's for my italian grandfather, but weve never done it for anyone else.

    Happy name day, Barb.

The catholic calendar must have a hundred of them. Somewhere there must be a Feast of St. Bub.

When I was in grade school, our principal ( a nun) used to send us birthday cards every year until after a student had recieved confirmation, then they would recieve a card on the day of the feast of their confirmation saint.

    Happy name day, Barb.
You may already know this, but there is an Italian pastry traditionally made on St. Joseph's Day called Sfinge di San Giuseppe. It's similar to a creampuff.

My wife's family always celebrated St. Joseph's Day. Now it's part of my tradition to make a trek down to the bakery to pick up some zeppole on St. Joseph's Day.

I always wanted to celebrate my birthday at the 19th hole at St Andrews Golf Club with a pint of single malt scotch (say Glenfiffich's 40 yr old single malt scotch). Well maybe a pint would be stretching it a bit, but then again, maybe not.

They are an integral part of the celebration. We bring 'em to my grandfather every year on his day.

My family buys them every St. Joseph's Day also. Besides eating them, I enjoy going to the bakery and pronouncing "Sfinge"

Greeks are big on Name Days. You are really supposed to celebrate Name Days instead of birthdays. We celebrate both.

The Greek Orthodox church makes a big deal out of name days. Growing up they were better than birthdays.

We usually check out the Catholic calendar, see what Saint or occassion it is and try to use it to name either a newborn baby, something you bought etc.

Like my nephew and niece, they were born when April 27 and May 31. According to the calendar, there's a certain St. Peter and St. Camilla, you know what their names are now.

The Swedes and Polish celebrate name days, too. One of my favorite books as a child was called "The Golden Name Day," about, you guessed it, Name days.

    Re: Name Days

I come from an Italian family but my parents did not name us after Saints. It was more like movie stars and songs. But at confirmation you were supposed to pick a saints name as your confirmation name. I would assume then you could celebrate that day but we never did.

Happy name day to you though! I envy you having an extra day to celebrate.

I've never celebrated "name day" (must be a Catholic thing), but I'm sure there's a Saint James Day. The website wouldn't come up so I don't know when it is.
Thanks for the memories, George. You made the Yankees what they are today... Champions!

    Palmer,
There are 5 saints with the name James. How lucky you are to have 5 name days!
