No whammies, no whammies...Eaton signs with Philly for $24 million

    Big money, big money!

Free agent pitcher Adam Eaton has reached preliminary agreement on a three-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies worth more than $24 million, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

It's sure surprising to me to see a guy with a career ERA+ of 92 getting $8 million a year. That's just freakin lunacy.

Not to mention that the guy has never stayed healthy in his career.

Yeah, but the sawx are gonna get Mats for under $10M even though he is "one of the 10 best pitchers in the world"

You know Boras is just gloating. Wait till Meche gets $13/year

I was shocked rotoworld was so high on this signing, it seems flat out stupid to me.

Eaton rejoins the team that drafted him. This could end up being one of the better starting pitcher signings of the offseason. If Eaton's finger problems are behind him, he's at least as good of a bet for the future as Vicente Padilla, Ted Lilly or Gil Meche, and the Phillies apparently were able to get him without offering up a fourth year.

How is he a better bet at a similar price than Padilla? Padilla is the same age, has had a better career, and has stayed healthy a little more (though not 100%) than Eaton.

As a Ranger fan, I've been saying to re-sign Padilla and let Eaton walk for awhile now.

Why does every discussion have to have a sour "sawx" (isn't it quicker to type "Sox"?) reference thrown in?

This is a crazy market. But I've got to admit - nice to see owners throwing money at their players rather than throwing it in their pockets.

    Annoying isn't it.

I'm beginning to wonder if Eddy is really very worried that the Sox WILL sign Mats, since he seems so fascinated with the topic.

Not to mention Gonzalez looks like he'll live up to his promise at 1B.

The only time in his career that he had an ERA+ of 100 or better was 2000, and that was in 133 innings and the ERA+ was 103. His 2006 season wasn't even good. He was hurt AND he put up an ERA over 5 in the limited time that he was pitching. What are they thinking?

They'd better hope so. Otherwise they paid 24 million dollars to a guy who A. Can't stay healthy and B. Has never had anything even close to an average year as a SP, and who gives up a lot of flyballs and now plays in a bandbox park.

The worst Free Agent Signing of the Year Competition is the closest in History this offseason.

Anybody else remember when Adam Eaton and Reggie Taylor were nearly traded to the Yankees for Andy Pettitte?

Eaton is rarely healthy. That's a lot of scratch for a DL regular...

Re: No whammies, no whammies...Eaton signs with Philly for $24 million

Yikes, you'd think they'd be able to call someone up from AAA who could do better than Eaton with the plus that he'd cost nearly nothing.

Re: No whammies, no whammies...Eaton signs with Philly for $24 million

If this is any indication of the SP market, Cash will stay away from it unless it involves Pettitte for 1-2 years.

The best thing I can say about this contract from the Phillies' fans is that, "At least its only 3 years, I guess."

If anyone has watched the movie Clue, there's a scene at the end where everyone is so numb to the killing that they just move from body to body without saying anything or reacting.

    We've hit that point.

This signing allows for questioning if Cashman got fair value in the Wright trade.

I cannot believe Adam Eaton is an $8M per year SP. Wow. This is ridiculous.
