Hmm...maybe the Dodgers will make a run at one of the free agent sluggers...or perhaps...trade for Sheffield to fill RF?
They do have in house options with Kemp and Ethier.
But I'm sure they'd like to have a big bat to fill his spot.
J.D. will sign with someone I'm sure.
Anyone see a trade sending Sheff to LA?
I wouldn't mind a Sheff-to-LA trade.
Drew would be a nice fit with the Angels.
He prefers to play centerfield, Angels are looking for a centerfielder...
Rivera LF, Drew CF, Guerrero RF = Anderson DH.
Makes too much sense for the Angels not to do.

What would we get in return however?
I don't think they'd part with Billingsley for him...I would like to get Broxton from them.
If there was a way to get Russel Martin, that would be great, but I doubt that too.
He could make a lot of sense for the Red Sox.

Does he really think anyone is gonna give him $11M/year. I guess he does..given the dearth of FA's some idiotic GM will likely over pay.
I hope it's the Red Sux...and he sits half the season with an inflamed labia.

On the surface this sounds like such a stupid thing to do on Drew's part, but then again Boras is his agent - that dude knows what the hell he is doing...he's my idol

LA wouldn't want Sheff (he's been there) and there is no way they'd trade any of those prospects for an old guy
Why? He would just be a more expensive Nixon that is a couple years younger.Originally Posted by Mark19

He would be a better centerfielder than Crisp and he has more patience and power than Nixon. Also, Drew hits lefties significantly better than Trotter.Originally Posted by marietta_soxfan

Don't come to the Bronx, JD. This guy will go on the DL if he broke a fingernail...

I would say the Padres would take him, but depending what he wants?
More money, opp to put up better stats, or just out of LA.
Whatever it is, it sure is hard to leave 33 million guarenteed on the table for something that isnt sure.

He just wanted to go to the Arizona D-backs to play with his little brother. Could we possibly see 2 sets of brothers playing in Arizona and San Diego (Giles)?
apparently it worked with the Lugo Bros, Julio simply aint the same after he left Tampa
seriously though, Detroit or Boston makes a lot of sense for Drew.
FOR TAIWAN!
Just like 2004 J.D. Drew is healthy in his free agent year and puts up good numbers. Sounds like Carl Pavano. I hope he signs with Philadelphia.
Maradona good.
Pele better.
George Best.
Hopefully this doesn't hurt the market for Sheff too much...

There is no way Scott Boras would guide his client out of that contract unless he knew the payday was going to be higher than the 3 years and $33 million left on Drew's contract.
$11 million for a 31 year old Drew with his history of injury seems to be a pretty good deal versus $13 million for a 38 year old Sheffield with his history of injury. Of course, the commitment to Sheffield is only one year, but signing Drew does not require giving up the talent it would take to send to Yankees in a trade for Sheff, so who knows which one is going to be more appealing to GM's.
Aramis Ramirez also opted out of his contract. There aren't many big bats in this free agent class, so that seems to be driving these decisions.
With Drew, it's the same story every year. Can he stay healthy? The guy has a career OBP of .393 and a career OPS of .906. He is very good defensively and can run. But he's got a history of getting hurt, so he is a risky proposition.
I'm sure the Red Sox will kick the tires....
The Sox should do more than kick the tires. I'd make every reasonable effort to get him...

I liked this quote from the article:
Asked about his relationship with Boras, Colletti replied: "Scott does a real good job of what he does. I've known Scott for a long time. All I'll say is he does a really good job of what he does."
It sounds like the only reason he left is because Boras convinced him he could make more money elsewhere. I hope it comes back to bite them.
It's not going to. This is going to be a good off-season of FAs.Originally Posted by AlbanyColonieYankee

Drew is going to get a contract worth over 33 million. I would take Drew over Soriano or Lee. Both those guys are going to command at least 35 million so let's see what Boras can do.Originally Posted by JWHIII

A little blast from the past for you.Originally Posted by JWHIII

While Phillies ace Curt Schilling hinted that he might go head-hunting at the man who had spurned his city (Schilling was quoted as saying Drew had better wear a batting helmet with double earflaps), Philadelphia fans booed Drew lustily and brought all manner of colorful signs to the ballpark. Eight arrests were made at his Veterans Stadium debut on August 10, 1999 when two D-cell batteries were thrown at him in the outfield.
I remember all the comotion he caused when breaking into the league, good stuff.Drew faced resentment from both fans and player for his holdout. After hitting him in the shoulder with a pitch, Sioux Falls hurler Rich Hyde admitted to throwing at him intentionally. “I never made any money in this game, and he’s turning down $2 million," explained Hyde. "A lot of guys here don’t appreciate that. I wanted to send that message to him.”
His last couple of injuries have been pretty freakish bad luck things. As long as that balky knee is OK, I'd take the risk. He's a phenominal talent.

It's random, I just think he's real talented and always wanted the Sox to go after him, they tried a couple of years ago if I remember right.Originally Posted by ShaneTravis

Drew is too much of an injury risk and not worth the amount he will ask for. Just say no to Drew.

He was finally healthy for a full season (146 games in 2006) and he put up .283/20/100.... I donno if I'd call that a phenomenal talent or worth more than 11 per year. I wouldn't even give him that. To me, at this current point in time, it was a big gamble for Drew to opt out. We'll see how it pans out for him, I just hope Theo stays away... which he probably won't.

How was it a gamble? He'll easily make more than $33M in the market. With Lee and Soriano in for huge paydays, Drew stacks up very nicely. Especially when you factor in his defense.Originally Posted by Mezmerize
I don't often agree with him anymore, but on J.D. Drew I agree with Bill Simmons' assessment from his NLDS diary completely:
"Now here's a guy who just doesn't give a crap: JD Drew. He carries himself with the intensity of a grocery bagger."
He plays defense like Shawn Green used to in LA, like he's trying his best not to get his pants dirty. And I know I hate it when people talk about A-Rod not being a clutch player despite all his great numbers, but I can honestly say that I'd rather have Olmedo Saenz up in a late-inning big spot than J.D. Drew. As for those 146 games he played in, I'm pretty sure he didn't start all of those. Grady Little rested him every few days rather than risk him injuring himself again.
I can recognize that he's a good player, it's just that, from watching him every day over the past two years, I feel like it's pretty obvious he could EASILY be even better if he gave two craps.

I agree, Nat. Watching Drew as much as I did (because the Dodgers are on my TV on summer evenings), it was readily apparent that he was either playing not to get hurt, or just didn't care. It was also apparent that he has prodigious skills (which made it even more difficult watching him go through the motions).Originally Posted by DaBoys4LifeNYY35
If he replaces Nixon, I predict that Sox fans will find themselves strangely conflicted just as many Yankee fans are with Alex. Cold analysis of the numbers will show JD to be a tremendously productive player, but watching him will be excruciating as they come to understand the depth of his disdain for the game.
He is no Nixonesque dirtdog. Of that I am sure.

Whats the big deal over Drew?
20/100/.283? He had a career high in games played last year at 146, too.
He is an upgrade over Nixon, but at at least 12 mil/yr. is he worth it?
More power to Boston, I guess.

The Tigers signed him to a 2-year extension worth $28 million, I believe.Originally Posted by TommyK8
