And they wait and they wait and the wait...

One of the MDs that I work with treated me to the Giants game yesterday.
Its only the fifth NFL game that I've been to. I couln't believe how much time is spent with the players just standing around. Waiting and waiting and waiting for the commercial breaks to be over.

Guys were jumping around just to stay loose. Finally they huddle up for a sec to remind people of the play that was called six minutes ago.

When you're at home, you get a bite, go to the bathroom, etc. It really amazed me.
The 1PM would probably end at 3PM if they actually played at a normal pace.

Re: And they wait and they wait and the wait...

They said on PTI that the NFL is going to test devices in helmets that relay the QB's voice to the rest of the offensive players in NFL Europe next summer. They want to see if it will reduce the time "wasted" by false start penalties and having to huddle and the like.

I think it's a horrible idea. In some places more than others (Seattle, for one), crowd noise is a HUGE aspect of homefield advantage that I don't think the league can fairly get away with eliminating.

The Giants need to get with the times and get cheerleaders. Trust me, if they had them you'd hardly notice the commercial breaks.

I've been to games in Dallas, Tampa, DC, and N.Y. and the Giants have by far the lamest stadium entertainment. For a team that represents New York they should have the best.

What do you need stadium entertainment for? Isn't the game entertaining enough. Good for the Giants for keeping it old school. Go to a stupid NBA game if you want to be entertained by dancers and loud music.

Exactly, I like that the Giants don't have cheerleaders. I'm not a Celtics fan, but I was disappointed that they caved and finally got a dance team. You don't need that garbage to enjoy sports.

    That's the spirit!

When I went to Texas Stadium three years ago, they had out the Cowboys Cheerleaders AND the Desperados Dancers. Not a fan of that stuff, though I wouldn't mind being one if they didn't have to have their backs turned to the game most of the time.

As much as I love football....I will admit thats its a MUCH better sport to watch on TV then in person, especially when you have the Sunday Ticket package on the dish.

Football in person can get boring with all the stoppages. And since you arent at home and cant flip the channel to another game....it drags.

IMO the best sport to see in person is hockey.

Funny thing is.. and this is before the new college rules.. College football goes so much quicker than an NFL game

Yup, I prefer staying home/going to a bar and watching a bunch of games. Not having to deal with the Meadowlands traffic is also a huge plus.

Yes, the game would be entertaining enough if you didn't have to sit there for up to five minutes waiting and watching for the official with his three foot orange gloves to give the signal for play to resume.

And what does watching 22 players standing in the middle of the field have to do with the game? What's "old school" about that?

    No doubt about that.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.

    So cut down the commercials.

It'll never happen, but that would be nice. How many times can one stand to hear "This is our country" commercials in one three-hour span?

There isnt anything more frustrating then the following sequence:

TD/FG, commercials, kickoff, then MORE commercials

You just had some after the score, why more after the kickoff?? I cant tell you how much that annoys me

I usually go home on Sundays to watch football with my family. I made fun of that commercial and my dad said he actually LIKES it because he likes John Mellancamp. And this is after seeing it all throughout the baseball playoffs/WS too.

I still prefer the games in person, despite the stoppages. There is NOTHING like being at a pro sporting event. But I just love the general atmosphere. There are only so many times they can pan to the coach, pan to a player, pan to the person in the weird face-paint, hear senseless banter that I said five seconds ago... whereas when you're there you just soak it all in without the Joe Buck's of the world.

I totally agree about the atmosphere. All the breaks just give me extra time to soak it all in, something that definitely doesn't translate to watching it from your living room and having to sit through commercials every 5 minutes. I've been to four Cowboys games over the past 5 years, only one of them at Dallas--I love going into enemy territory and taking flak from everyone. Bring it, dudes--win or lose, I AM a face-painting, obnoxious, bordering on arrogant Cowboys fan, and you can't do ANYTHING about it!

I would love to see you at a Cowboys-Giants game at the Meadowlands....that must be interesting.

But it cant be any worse then wearing Jets stuff at a a Jets-Bills game in Buffalo...people up there are insane.

    Been there, done that...twice.

I did wear Cowboys gear into the Vet during its last season...but it was during an Eagles-Cardinals game. I DID, however, get unbelievably nasty glares when I cheered as McNabb limped off the field with that hurt ankle.

Like you said, that'll never happen. The NFL gets billions in television rights from the networks. If anything there's going to be more commercials.

The closet thing any of us will ever see to a commercial free game is the NFL Networks NFL Replay which condenses a 3-hour game down to an 1 1/2 hour. Speaking of which Nat, the 'Skins/Cowboy game will be replayed tonight at 8:00pm. Get that Tivo ready...that one's a keeper.

I've done it for Nets games as well.

Ah, not too bad. My main issue is not being able to fully enjoy the full slate of games.

Natasha has a lot more guts than I do. My Packers had to play in Philthafukkindelphia the past four years now and I never had the desire to go there to watch even one game.

Philly fans are the closest we have to European soccer fans.
