    This is not a surprise.

Hmm, didn't realize it was this expected. I guess the mods can merge the two threads or something then.

And this was the reason why he was never the elite prospect he should have been and it makes the Sabean trade look a little better now.

Well, he has officially begun his Mark Prior-esque career that will undoubtedly plague him throughout his career.

A little. But the Twins still got Nathan and Bonser in that deal.

Bonser is gonna be a mediocre pitcher in the AL. Nathan is the only thing I'd lose sleep over but he wasn't very good in the playoffs and he wasn't dominant like he is in the AL with the Giants in 2003 (about a 3 ERA)

I think it's too soon to say that. It is estimated that one-tenth of all MLB pitchers have or will have Tommy John at some point in their career. John Smoltz, Billy Wagner, David Wells, Chris Carpenter, Tom Gordon, Paul Byrd, Eric Bedard, Kris Benson, Mo.....

Exactly, and the success rate of Tommy John surgery is closing in on 90 percent. For a guy as young as Liriano, it's a huge setback, but hardly the kiss of death. It's probably going to take close to two full years, but he's very likely to come back as strong or stronger than before.

That sucks for the Twins and Liriano himself. I hope he has a speedy recover, he had/has a bright future ahead of him.

He's still young and has plenty of time to get it together. I wish him the best...

Tommy John surgury is not the end of the world for him as a pitcher. He'll most likely come back stronger. 2007 is out, 2008 is recovery and 2009 he'll be unstoppable.

Mark Prior is the king of freak/fluke injuries. I don't think this is the same thing. The Cubs would love it if the reason Prior got hurt was from overuse.

Wow, that sucks for him and the Twinkies. The good news is that he's very young, so hopefully can recover quickly and come back strong.

It seems like he kept going to doctors until he found one who wanted to do the surgery (kind of like Octavio Dotel).

Shame though. Hopefully he bounces back fully.

That's terrible for the Twins' rotation. Hopefully Liriano only has to go through this once though.

That is horrible. Liriano was so promising.

If somebody can work on his mechanics, it'll help too. He delivery was like controlled chaos. I always felt like he was one step away from blowing out a shoulder, elbow knee or ankle.

The thought of Liriano coming back even stronger should turn hitters to Jell-o.

Horrible news. But didn't Mo come back from Tommy John surgery in the past?

Yes, but he wasn't so great before or after it. He all of a sudden one day started throwing hard, and no one has an explanation for it, except for Rivera, who credited God. He almost got traded for David Wells right before his sudden gain in velocity happened.

If the Twins traded Pierzynski for the year of Liriano that they got straigh up it would have been a deal for the Twins.

The Giants got an below average year of Pierzynski and preceeded to waive him for Liriano, Bonser, and Nathan.
