Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.
The players have already agreed, in principal, to a luxury tax upon salaries. Teams over a certain point will pay a certain percentage of their team salary over that number, into some pool. Likely, it will go into Selig's pockets, and be relegated to some team that has a chance of making sure the yankees don't win the world series.. I'm getting off topic. I have a suggestion for the threshhold for this luxury tax. right now the owners and players are bandying about numbers like "102M,...
I received this via e-mail today. This usually doesn't work, but I thought I would post it here, so the word gets out. I'm going to support this. ---------- On August 29th we ask that all baseball fans don't attend or watch baseball. For all those who have tickets to the games and who want to attend the game (so they don't want to waste the money they spent for their tickets), we ask that you wear all black to the game to show their support. Please forward this e-mail to as many...
Players should picket if they want to strike http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/caple_jim/1419945.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Jim Caple ESPN.com Fine. Go ahead guys. Feel free to go on strike. As union members, you have the right to strike if you deem it necessary. We can handle it. We'll just watch football. And when you finally solve your squabble, we'll let you know whether we're interested in watching you play again. But...
Little frustration: Manager can't right Red Sox http://www2.bostonherald.com/sport/sports_columnists/tony08192002.htm Baseball/by Tony Massarotti Monday, August 19, 2002 MINNEAPOLIS - For an instant, at least, the thrill of his rookie season was stripped away and his laidback, easygoing manner was gone. Under the inflatable roof of the Metrodome last night, Grady Little looked and sounded more frustrated than he has at any point this season.
Key issues likely won't be discussed Monday http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0819/1419888.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services Both the players' union and the owners had their full negotiating teams present as labor talks continued Monday morning, ESPN has learned. With that being the case, the sides are likely not discussing core economic issues. It had been expected that both sides would focus on those key...
Can someone explain this part of the negotiations to me? I've heard that Selig wants a fund of $100 million dollars to use at his own discretion. They have since lowered this to $85 million with the players offering $40 million with restrictions on how the money can be used. I've heard Selig say in interviews lately that he regrets bailing out a few teams over the past couple of years -- one of which the Diamondbacks because they came back to win the World Series...he should have just...

I'm not a Coney fan anymore, but I know there are some still on this site...if any locals are interested, Michael Kay is taping a Centerstage with Coney this Friday...if you can't make the taping, you can still email a question if you like. Chris Everett is also being taped -- quite frankly, I'd rather listen to her!! :D Anyway, here's the info for those interested: http://www.yesnetwork.com/network/index.cfm?cont_id=101563&page_type=wide I'd like to send in a few questions but I...
Bush: 'They need to keep working' http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0816/1418856.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush will be "furious'' if baseball players carry out their threat to strike, sternly urging players and owners to resolve their differences. "They need to keep working,'' Bush said Friday after the union's executive board set an Aug. 30 deadline for a walkout.
Remember early in the seaSON when the YANKEES were 5 games back to the sox and a redsox fan posted the question "can the YANKEES overcome a 5 game deficit" ? Well by that Boston based logic, this morning should be time to schedule the sox funeral mass. They are now 7 games back. It is August 17. According to Boston philosphy the season is long over for the sox. If the tables were reversed I would not give up on the YANKEES but then again, I'm not a prisoner of Fenway. :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY:...
I mean, all he did was taunt/bait/insult when the Red Sox were doing good, but I haven't seen him/her in a while. Was YTBH banned, or just sheepish to come around without being able to brag?
I took this poll from USA Today: On-field ramifications of strike http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2002-08-16-survey-strike-ramifications.htm What would be the greatest on-field loss if the MLB season ends in a strike?
http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0816/1418791.html NEW YORK -- Baseball players set a strike date for Aug. 30, a senior member of the union's executive board said Friday, putting the sport on course for its ninth work stoppage since 1972. The date was set by the board during a 90-minute conference call, the board member said on the condition he not be identified. He said the union office was to issue an announcement later Friday. When the board met in Chicago on Monday, it deferred a...
Vote for the best solution to avoid the Strike
The players say they need to go on strike now, because they fear the owners will lock them out in the off season and then implement new rules. If the owners really don't want a strike, why dont the promise and put in writing that they (the owners) will not lock out the players in the off season or the regular season. It may drag out negotiations to solve their problems, but it keeps the game going... Comments?

Hicks: Strike might make owners push for cap http://msn.espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0817/1419334.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press DALLAS -- Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks says that if players strike, owners might retreat from compromise and push for baseball to have a salary cap. "I think a majority of owners, including me, would probably like to have even stronger cost-containment than we're talking about right...
I guess the Rangers figured they had too much starting pitching ... http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20020818&content_id=107138&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp
Once Aug. 30 comes and if they go on strike, don't expect one of these three day strikes and then early the next week Bud Selig and Donald Fehr standing at the podium announcing a deal. If they go out, goodbye playoffs, goodbye World Series and most likely goodbye much, if not all of the 2003 season. However, I'm not totally convinced they are going out yet, I just don't know how to get into these next two weeks knowing it could count for nothing.
be excited that Soriano reached 30/30, but I'm not. I should be happy that Mussina appears to be back on track for a "stretch run to the playoffs", but I'm not. I should be thrilled the Yanks are 33 games over .500 and 7 games over the Red Sox, but I'm not. I should be watching these games the next two weeks, but I won't. Why waste the effort when I don't even know if there will be Major League baseball in two weeks?
I'm pretty familiar with all of the compaints on both sides and don't like Bud Selig one bit, but here's my take on a strike. Because the players are afraid of a lockout next year they might strike now, especially since 1) they have received most of their pay checks and 2) the owners would be financially hurt w/ no post season revenues. But the players don't know for sure there will be a lockout next season. So why don't they take the moral high ground and finish out the year, give us the...
Best Winning Percentage for a 20-Game Winner Well, thanks to the third loss of the season by Pedro Martiniez tonight, it appears that Ron Guidry's record for the best winning percentage for a 20-game winner will be safe for yet another year. It marks the 24th straight season that no 20 game winner will have been able to best his mark of 25-3 for a .893 winning percentage. Pedro is now 16-3 and would have to win another 10 games in a row in order to break Guidry's record, which is highly...
With two out in the sixth ... it's 8-0 Dodgers ...
I've been thinking, they've piled on a few victories lately, despite Sunday's 9-1 loss vs Reds @ Cinergy Field. Does anyone think they could possibly make the WC? At present, at .515, they're tied w/Cincinnati for 3rd place, behind ex-NYers, the Giants and Dodgers, respectively. http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/standings/ Any ideas that they've started to play baseball like they should've done all along? Is Chambliss responsible for this? I'd appreciate hearing it out there. Thx. :) ...
The Swooning Sux actually have a lead at 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Henderson scored in the first on a wild pitch as the Elephant Man K'd. Gallop Agnew scored in the second on a 6-4 FC by Rickey....
