Discuss the rich history of baseball in here.
Who was the last pitcher (if it has ever happened) to start consecutive games that were 0-0 after 9 innings and when did it happen? I ask this because with Johan Santana pitching the Mets and Cubs are scoreless after 5 innings. Edit: The Mets scored in the bottom of the sixth.
There's a story in the Times today about this tiny street that was named for Thurman Munson. Not much of a tribute... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/18/nyregion/18yankees.html?hpw
That a 28-year-old Jackie Robinson made his Major League debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers finally making Major League Baseball America's game. Thank you Jackie for the character and integrity you demonstrated against the racism and ignorance this country displayed and truly demonstrating the man you were.
The Yankees series in Boston just had all three games decided by 2 runs. The previous time the Yankees did that was June 23-25, 2009 at Atlanta with scores of 0-4, 8-4, and 11-7 listing the Yankees score first.
Before this series, when was the last time the Yankees played a series of three or more games without any starting pitchers on either team getting a decision?
Since the Yankees are the defending champions I thought I would ask this. Two teams the year after they won the series had the words "World's Champions" put on their uniforms. Can you name them?
When Jackie Robinson stole home against the Yankees in the 1955 World Series, it was a very close play. And Lord knows Yogi Berra thought he was out! Now, you make the call. Was Jackie Robinson safe or out when he stole home against the New York Yankees in the 1955 World Series?
I would strongly recommend to all you fans of Yogi Berra to read a book by Allen Barra titled: "Yogi Berra Eternal Yankee". It gives you a glimpse into life in the U.S. in baseball during the 1940's, 50's and the 60's. It also gives you the reasons that Yogi is so liked not only by Yankee fans and but all baseball fans. The author apparently did a great deal of research and the facts about life in baseball before free agency is fascinating. I haven't finished it but wanted to pass this...
As some of you here know I love hitting and offense. I was checking out Red Ruffing on Wikipedia and found this interesting tidbit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Ruffing Ruffing also hit 36 homeruns and batted .269 in 1937 career at bats. And the name is just cool kinda like the Red Baron. Cheers
I had always wondered what the story was behind this... http://www.roadsidephotos.com/baseball/name.htm This usage can be traced through the annual baseball guides. Spalding's Base Ball Guide for 1887 reported the results of the 1886 postseason series between Chicago, champions of the National League, and St. Louis, champions of the American Association, under the heading "The World's Championship." As the editor noted, the two leagues "both entitle their championship contests each season...

It's a shame that the Yankees couldn't bring back this old Yankee to throw out the lst ball in game two of the WS. He is a war hero of WWII and Korea and in the hall of fame for broadcasting. However, in 1950 against the Phillies, he was the MVP when he was instrumental in winning the first and third games of that low scoring Series and played a great second base. Does anyone out there feel like me? Just wondering.
Billy Martin died in a car crash 20 years ago today. Billy was driving while intoxicated.. Billy managed for 16 years and was a player for 11 years mostly as a 2nd baseman. Billy was a tragic figure. He played far above his talent. He was a favorite of Casey Stengle because he gave it all. He was a victim in the Cococobana incident in 1956 where he was celebrating a teammates birthday accompanied by Mantle, Ford, Bauer, Cerv and others. A local bowling team was there also and they began...
From the NY Times website this day http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/09/sports/baseball/09video.html?_r=1&hp
Somebody just pointed out to me that Bucky Dent's given last name was O'Dey. Anyone know when he changed it and why?
Here's how the voting for the Hall of Fame went down in 1971: http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/hof_1971.shtml This list is remarkable for two reasons: first, it shows that the standards required to be a HOFer, especially due to the veterans committee, have fallen greatly -- there are 15 players rejected on this ballot who later went on to be inducted (I believe 12 of them by the veterans). Second, look at the first name on the list (rejected with only 67.2%), and feel your jaw...
Not sure if this is the best spot for this or not. This excellent video has been making the rounds the last few days: <object width="560" height="340"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_vUhSYLRw14&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></object>
Is there a website that would give me the rosters for all the Wolrd Series teams??? I'm looking for The Yankees now, but soon, I will want all of them. Thanks!
Tommy Henrich's death takes us one step farther away from those great Yankee teams of Joe McCarthy and the early years of Casey Stengel in the Bronx. By all accounts, when the stakes were high, he was quite a dangerous player. There's a thread somewhere on great baseball nicknames, and "Old Reliable" has to be one of them. I assume--or, at least, I hope--the Yankees will remember him some time during the regular season.

With 14 teams in the AL, the MVP voting adds up to 1,652 points which is 118 per team. Here is the total number of MVP voting points for Yankees by year: 2008: 48 2007: 515 2006: 342 2005: 510 2004: 336 2003: 258 2002: 428 2001: 154
Right now I'm watching Sandy Koufax pitching game 7 of the '65 series against the Twins....on 2 days rest. One would have to be an absolute baseball geek to watch full games from 44 years ago, but it is just too enjoyable to not watch. Love this program and network.
Hideki Matsui became the first player to have three hits for two or more RBI each in a World Series game.
This years team became just the second major league team in history to win 103 games AND win the World Series. Only the 1968 Tigers were also able to do it. 4 previous Yankees teams have won 103 games, 1942,1954,1980 & 2002 and only the 42 team even made it to the Series.
NEW YORK YANKEES http://jimcolyer.com/papers/entry?id=41;fa=2 The New York Yankees began in 1903 as the Highlanders. Cy Young threw a no-hitter against them in 1908. They became the Yankees in 1913. "Yankees" was an Indian word for the English in early America. When the Indians tried to say "English," it came out, "Yankees." Yankee Stadium opened in the Bronx in 1923. It was a wonder of the modern world. The short porch in right field was designed for Babe Ruth and the team's...
