  1. Who am I?

I've played for New York, Detroit and Minnesota teams. I also spent a lot of time playing in Newark and even Tennessee, and also out of this country. I was born in Virginia a long time ago. I turned twenty in my first season of pro ball. I batted and threw right-handed. Some have called me diminutive. I was kind of bow-legged but that didn't matter ... cause many people think I was one of the best defensive third basemen in the history baseball - in any league. I was kind of flashy out...

  2. Two Consecutive Games Where The Starters Had The Same Number Of Innings and ER

Yesterday Sabathia and Price each allowed 0 ER in 8 innings. Today Nova and Garza each allowed 6 ER in 4 2/3 innings. When was the last time that happened in consecutive Yankee games? When was the last time that happened in consecutive games of a series between any teams?

  4. Has There Ever Been A Three Way Tie For The Best Record In MLB?

I looked at the Yankees, Twins, and Rays remaining schedules and I could see them all finishing about 98-64 with a three way tie for the best record in baseball. The NL could hypothetically have all four playoff teams with the same record. At least one team that is currently within 2 games of the best record in the NL will miss the playoffs since there are five of those teams.

  5. Who Was The Last Team To Have Three Pitchers With ERAs Under 3.00?

Who was the last team (if it has ever happened before) to have three pitchers with 1 inning per team game and an ERA under 3.00? Chris Carpenter is third on St. Louis with a 2.90 ERA as of now.

  7. The Yankees Could Do Something Bad For The First Time In Team History This Season

Only eight Yankees before this season and never more than once in a season has a Yankee had enough innings to qualify and an ERA of 5.00 or worse. Now A.J. Burnett (5.15 ERA, 157 1/3 innings) and Javier Vazquez (5.01 ERA, 143 2/3 innings) could become the first pair of Yankees to do that the same season.

  8. A Team To Have A 19 Game Winner For Five Consecutive Years

With Wang (2006 and 2007), Mussina (2008), and Sabathia (2009 and 2010), the Yankees have had a pitcher win at least 19 games for five consecutive years. Pettitte (2000 and 2003), Clemens (2001), and Wells (2002) gave the Yankees a four year streak earlier in the 2000s. No other team has had a four or more year streak like that in the 2000s. Before the Yankees, the previous team to have a pitcher with at least 19 wins for at least five consecutive years was Atlanta for six years from 1995 to...

  9. Baseball Quotations

Phil Rizzuto "I'll never forget September sixth nineteen-fifty. I got a letter threatening me, Hank Bauer, Yogi Berra and Johnny Mize. It said if I showed up in uniform against the Red Sox I'd be shot. I turned the letter over to the FBI and told my manager Casey Stengel about it. You know what Casey did? He gave me a different uniform and gave mine to Billy Martin. Can you imagine that! Guess Casey thought it'd be better if Billy got shot."

  10. The Best Nicknames In The World of Baseball

First let me say that the nickname his teammates used for him must of boosted his confidence immensely when he took the mound. In 1937, he led the NL in pitching appearances for Philadelphia with 56, of which 26 were starts... his name is Hugh Mulcahy. I could see it now when one of his teammates would ask the manager "Who's going for us today?" His nickname was "Losing Pitcher" :scared:

  11. What was the deal with Babe Ruth and the MVP award?

Babe Ruth only won 1 MVP award and that was in 1923. He hit .356-60-164 in 1927 and didn't receive one vote. Lou Gehrig, who deservingly won it 27, had a pretty good year himself. It wasn't until 1931 before Babe Ruth even received any MVP votes. In 1926, George Burns won it with .358-4-114-97 runs. Ruth hit.372-47-146-139 runs. In 1928, Micky Cochrane won it with .293-10-57-92 runs. Ruth hit .323-54-142 with an amazing 163 runs.

  14. "A Hero Named Bobby" by Bob Herbert

It seemed like this was the best place to post this link to Mr. Herbert's great column: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/24/opinion/24herbert.html I loved how Herbert's father explained that Hank Thompson and Bobby Thomson were not related--a great and wise answer. The comments are full of great baseball memories from readers, too. If anyone has there own baseball/family memories to share, please do!

  15. A Team To Have Three Of The Top Ten In MLB In RBI

Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, and Robinson Cano could all finish Top 10 in MLB in RBI. In 2005 the Yankees came close with Rodriguez fourth, Gary Sheffield sixth, and Hideki Matsui tied for eleventh 1 RBI behind a tie for eighth, ninth, and tenth. Jay Buhner, Edgar Martinez, and Tino Martinez of Seattle in 1995 were the last trio of teammates to do that. It probably was more common when there were less teams.

  17. Yankees With A Winning % Below .500 and Enough Innings To Qualify

A.J. Burnett is below .500 and it's possible he and Javier Vazquez will both finish below .500 with enough innings to qualify (162). The last Yankee to finish below .500 with enough innings to qualify was Orlando Hernandez in 2000. The last time two Yankees did it was Jim Abbott and Melido Perez in 1993.

  20. The Yankees Have Played Five Consecutive Games Decided By 1 Run

From August 9 to August 13, the Yankees just played five consecutive games decided by 1 run. The previous time the Yankees did that was August 8 through August 12, 2005. Both sets of games included exactly two games vs. Texas.

  22. Question about Switch hitters home runs.

Berkman, Teixeira and Posada all have hit over 250 home runs. Is this the first time a team had three switchhitters in the same lineup that had hit that many homers playing at the same time. Also since Nick Swisher has hit over 150 home runs has one team ever had 4 switchitters with over 150 home runs playing in the same lineup.
