The idea was to have a spot where the fairer sex could discuss things that go along with being a Sports Fan, and a poster here. To not be involved in team rivalry, and to have some fun, and not have guys rolling their eyes when we digress into "estorgen" territory.

The first try got closed down for some potential CS code violations. Thus, the new incarnation. So, hopefully we will have some fun here, and it will be an interesting ride.

Hope that helps.:)

Last I checked in over there (have to admit I did) they were debating Jessica Alba as opposed to someone else - and it was not for their complete understanding of Sabermetrics and MoneyBall.

Now we all know that Benjamin Bratt is quite informed about such things as WHIP and VORP, etc.

Also, does anyone else think that Brad Pitt has got to be the stupidest man in the world?? Beautiful, but about as bright as a rosen bag. (I hope I don't get in trouble for using baseball terms in this thread!)

Maybe there should be an old lady married thread!:P

Some of this stuff in here is lost on me.

I have always loved sports, which is kind of strange since my parents had no interest at all. I don't know where the interest came from, but it's been with me as long as I can remember.

My husband likes sports although not as much as I do, my son couldn't care less, but my daughter loves them as much as I do.:)

I love football, baseball and basketball. I have come to appreciate soccer since my kids both played it and my daughter still does.

One of the nice developments has been the end of the "Tom Girl". So many girls play a sport or two these days that I never really hear that term much anymore, certainly not like when I was growing up. My daughter can go from kicking butt in a game to coming home and doing her nails and hair! That is very cool.;)

I used to get the "test" when I'd meet a guy and the subject of sports would come up. It would start out with really easy questions like how many players on a baseball team and progress as I correctly answered question after question, until I "proved" I knew what I was talking about. I have a good mind for trivia so I usually could pass these tests with flying colors. Do you girls know what I mean?

Well I'm off to do my laundry now!:P

My best friend used to tell me that I should talk sports less because I'd never get a boyfriend if I continued ... that no guy likes a girl who knows about sports ... funny, I always found it to be the opposite, guys like being able to hold an intelligent conversation about sports with a woman ... but maybe that's just the guys I hang out with. And it doesn't bother my husband, aside from fighting over who gets the sports page first (me!) ...

I am the sports junkie in my house. MLB then college basketball and football. I don't really care much about other pro sports but will watch an NFL game if I am bored. My husband had no interest in sports at all until just a few years ago. Now he watches the Yankees with me but nothing else. I think I would like hockey if I went to games but it is not a good tv sport so I pass on it for now. Soccer? :barf:

I must admit that I love being more knowledgable about sports than most men I know. :)

Soccer isn't so bad-those people are tremendous athletes. The cardio fitness to run up and down that huge field. My daughter's legs are like steel and she's only nine.

I wouldn't pick it as a sport to watch over another but I've come to appreciate it.

Now if I had to pick a sport to watch it would be NFL football first.

I used to get a lot of bad reactions from men when they found out how into sports I was. I think some men might feel threatened because traditionally some men sometimes use sports as an escape, as an interest they enjoy separate from their significant other.

That describes my household as well! This conversation took place a couple of months ago, at the end of an inning during a Yankees game:

Husband: How come we didn't see Jeter bat?

Me: He didn't come up to bat in this inning.

Husband (genuinely puzzled): But I thought they all got to bat in every inning?

How about just considering that guys happen to enjoy sports? My Dad loved boxing, but Mom never liked it. I'm not too sure if it was *designed* to be a separator so much that it may simply be something different amongst the genders.

About 25 years ago, Jayne Kennedy was one of the few female sports broadcasters, as sports was typically an all-male world for broadcasting. Now we've got a slew of female broadcasters on Fox.

As to intimidation, if she knows more about sports than he does, that may bother some guys. Of course, some guys will know more about sports (including different sports) than others, so it all depends on the individual.

True, my 'girl'friends would tell me that I shouldn't showcase my baseball knowledge. My 'guy'friends think it's awesome and actually come to me to talk about baseball. But then again - they're my 'guy-friends', not my 'boyfriend' . :dunno:
I do usually know more than most - even if it isn't about the Yankees. I do love the Yankees, but I am a fan of baseball.

I wish I liked other sports but I just can't get into them. I like to play other sports but not watch them. I can get into College Basketball and hockey (but only in person).

Strangely enough, I kind of use baseball in the same way. It gives me something of my very own to enjoy, and since my husband doesn't like going to MLB games (Cape League or minors are fine), I get to go by myself or with friends.
I find that I am regarded skeptically by many men who gather around to watch sports. I was at a function the other day, and the TV was on in the den to A's-Tigers. I was the only woman in there watching, and pretty much was ignored as the men tossed comments around (This was not a group of guys that were friends, either.) I didn't really care b/c I just wanted to see the game, but I do find that I am regarded as an oddity by a certain genre of men.
One of the things I like so much about this site is that there are a lot of woman posters here, which tends to create a more inclusive atmosphere. Also the moderation, but that's another story.

Does it bother anyone else that when you go someplace public to watch a game and you say that you like a player, some guy inevitably makes a "So you think he's really hot, huh?" type of comment? I used to just ignore it but now I find myself really jumping ugly on the offender.

OMFG - don't get me started.

Other person - "What's your favorite team?"
Me: "The Yankees"
OP: "Oh, so Derek Jeter and/or Alex Rodriguez must be your favorite players"

It would be difficult for me not to like sports. My grandfather coached high school football, my dad coaches college football, my oldest brother now coaches college football, and my other brother is on a football scholarship in college. Plus my brother's played basketball, and baseball through their entire lives. I basically spent my childhood going to baseball tournaments on the weekends during the spring and football games on the weekends in the fall.

That's part of the reason I like my jersey that has no name on it. Makes it less likely that people will assume I only like the team because of Jeter and A-Rod. Maybe we ladies should just all by Randy Johnson jerseys. That should prove the point that we don't just like players for their looks!

Yes! This is the vibe I got from the guys watching that TV show. And many times you have to somehow prove your knowledge before being accepted. (Posters here are a notable exception--I'm talking IRL.)

Ugh! Since when do we have to do things just to please a man? I hate when other women say that I shouldn't do something because men don't like that. Like I care? The man that I will be with will accept me for who I am. And I love sports! And nothing will change that.

I work in an environment that is completely male dominated and after big ball games the guys always come into my office to talk about it with me and ask me my opinion about plays/players. It's awesome.

To thine own self be true!

The first person the father's of the girls on the travel soccer team come to to talk about sports with is ME!!! Not my husband, not each other, but little old me.

This will be our fourth year together starting next week, and I know Steve will come up to me and talk about how the Red Sox are going to fix the team (as if I have any idea!) and Dennis will come to me and tell me how his Steelers are going to be fine (which I agree with) and it'll all be good, and then the game will start and we'll cheer for all our daughters out there who for sixty mintues are ferocious competitors who don't care what their hair looks like. This is good stuff ladies.

 Did you tell him it's not Tee ball?

Pepper, again thank you for starting this thread. It is a needed space for us ladies. Also, an old married lady thread might not be a bad idea!:)

My husband says that reasons he married me, were that I liked World War II movies, knew more about sports than any guy he knew and was the only women he ever knew that was not mad at him when he and his friends go to a Strip Club after a Patriots Game! (His friends still tell their wifes the traffic was really bad and that's why they were so late, and I ask about who the dancers were and did he see any players there, etc.)

I love Baseball, all types. I like football, and will watch college and Pro. But baseball is my first love.

My daughter loves baseball,(she is 11) and we enjoy it together. My husband knows to clear out if an important game is on. Last weekend we watched the 2004 ALCS, just to remember the good old days. She did tell me that if its not Red Sox or Yankees, it really isn't that fun to watch, but she'll come around!

Ladies, this is great. Pepper, again, many thanks.:D

My thoughts exactly, if the hubby didn't like the fact that I'm into sports, he'd just have to deal with it ... and I do go to more MLB games than he does ... as for work, it's the same here, I work with all men and they're all really into football but they know how much I love baseball so if they have a baseball related question, I'm the one they come to. And every Monday, lunch has become dissect the weekend's NFL games (we've got a Steelers fan, a Giants fan, a few Redskins fans and me, a Cowboys fan so it gets interesting).

I just had to come in here. Don't know what's up?

Reason I'm in here though is kinda like the reason I wanted my wife to check-out a certain movie from Hollywood Video for us to watch last night. I was just curious about something. The movie is called "the break-up"

Movie left me disappointed some though because all I had wanted to see in the movie ... turned out to be blurry. :( :upset:

Yes! This is the vibe I got from the guys watching that TV show. And many times you have to somehow prove your knowledge before being accepted. (Posters here are a notable exception--I'm talking IRL.)
My fiance gave me the "Offensive Line Test" and "Fullbacks Test" when we first started talking. He soon after admitted to being very impressed that I knew more about football than he did--he played for four years, but I've been watching and learning since before I can remember. :) He never really doubted me all that much in the first place, though, since I was a known Cowboys fan in the middle of their three consecutive 5-11 seasons.

On the other hand, when I have questions about baseball, I definitely go to him as my personal baseball guru. Same with basketball.

We have some great conversations, with the exception that he has almost no tolerance for Favre-bashing unless he's been drinking. :P

I have the same issue. I even have married guys coming up to me in awe, saying they would marry me in a second if they weren't married. Where are all the single non-intimidated male sport fans!!!

Does it bother anyone else that when you go someplace public to watch a game and you say that you like a player, some guy inevitably makes a "So you think he's really hot, huh?" type of comment? I used to just ignore it but now I find myself really jumping ugly on the offender.

It sort of depends. If its about Jeter, I will start teasing them (talking about his best, ummm... features ;) but then I will launch into a diatribe about all his awards/accomplishments/stats and it usually shuts them up.

My fave is when a guy assumes that you don't know anything about sports because you are a girl. I usually "blow them away" within 30 seconds.

You have a good memory! Italy was fabulous, although they don't really like baseball there. I went 10 days without Yankee highlights (I got a little when I crossed the border to France). The men in Rome are a little out of control, although it is kind of nice that everyone thinks you are "bella." I can't picture an american man I don't know coming up to me on the streeting shouting "Ciao Bella!" and hugging me.

It's so true. A friend I and I were in a bar a few years ago and the song "Down with the Sickness" came on and I said to my friend that this was Steve Karsay's warm up song. The next to us overheard and almost fell off his chair that we knew who Steve Karsay was!

Let me ask you ladies a question. I used to take my dog down to New Haven for medical testing and I had to wait an hour between testing so quite often I walked him around the Yale campus. Perfectly normal young women would run up to my dog and pet him and start a conversion with me. Bear in mind, these same young women would have viewed me as some kind of weirdo if I was walking around without my dog. So, you have a dog, you are suddenly viewed as being harmless?

My advice, if you're a single guy.... get a dog and walk around a college campus.

And it doesn't bother my husband, aside from fighting over who gets the sports page first (me!)

My moms friend asked me why I was watching sports, and that I should be watching the Hallmark channel (not even kidding with that) instead. I think I looked at her like this :wtf: for a few minutes. I was kind of insulted!

That's why my idea of camping is having an RV. You have your own bed, shower and kitchen right with you and know you are the only ones who used it. :) Not exactly roughing it but that's ok!

As for cars...I love them! I envy Jay Leno with all the different cars he could possibly want. I mostly love the old muscle cars from the 60's and 70's but I wouldn't turn down a few of todays cars if I could have anything I wanted.
No Lambourghinis for me though...strictly American cars (ok, maybe an MG like my dad used to have, but that's about it). That's weird huh?

Never tried the Dolce and Gabana. My mom's favorite was Chanel no. 5 though. It's one of those scents that don't smell good on me though.

My favorite perfume is probably Beautiful by Estee Lauder. I don't buy it often because it isn't cheap. I did get some good deals on Ebay though, for big gift sets with full bottles and they weren't knock offs or watered down.
Only once I was disappointed by buying little sample bottles of something. But that was my fault for not knowing the sizes.

I like cheap perfume because I can have more choices.
Exclamation! is probably my favorite cheapie one.
Also, Celine Dion has a nice scent I just bought for my daughter.
And White Diamonds smells really good.

Mid-week day games Yankee Stadium. Go alone. I swear if I was not married, I would have met at least a dozen potential husbands that way by now.

Well, weird maybe wasn't the best choice of words. Saying they're not my style would have been better. I don't know, I've never really gotten behind the idea. I'm more of the all or nothing mentality - hotels or campgrounds or bust.

I hate camping though-yuck! Of course, I have only been to very weird campgrounds (cheap husband) so that turned me off right away. We also didn't have the best equipment which I'm told makes a big difference as well.

Eh, the gas mileage is better on the new one than the 1989 Pace Arrow we had. That only got like 4-5 mpg. The new one gets around 10. Not horrible considering it's around 20,000 lbs.

I'm the "co-pilot" (and sometimes I drive), so I always stay up front with hubby. I love long trips so it's never boring to me (otherwise we wouldn't be travelling this way). My top perfumes are:
Philosophy Amazing Grace (more my everyday perfume)
Dior J'Adore
Marc Jacobs Marc Jacobs
Clinique Happy
and my new obsession is
L'Occitane Neroli - I want to lick myself it smells so good :D

I'm not really a perfume person. I have a bottle of Burberry Brit that I've had for a few years (i.e. if perfume goes "bad", I should probably toss it) that I'll use occasionally and I have some other stuff that isn't a name brand or anything but smells pretty, but other than that, I just can't get into perfume.

RV's? Not for me. I'm not camping on a roadtrip. Maybe for like a night in the summer somewhere with working bathrooms, but if I go away, I'm staying in a motel.

As for guys and sports -- I find they like it initially, but then seem to get intimidated if I bring up anymore than the basic what teams I'm a fan of (and they usually get scared that I know more than them). Maybe I'm finding the wrong guys :(.

You are definetly finding the wrong guys. I have yet to date a girl that knows anywhere near as much about sports as I do. I've dated a couple that are casual fans and like to go to games, but really dont know that much about the teams. The girl I'm seeing now knows nothing about sports.

If I found a girl I liked that knew alot about sports (even more then me, although that would be hard to do lol), I would be in heaven. Sports are a big part of my life and if I had something like that in common with the girl I dated, I think that would be awesome.

A lot has changed in the RV industry over the last couple of years even. But a lot of people can be cramped.
We took our old motorhome to Florida with my sister in law, bro in law, their 2 kids, our 2 kids and our 2 dogs. No slideout rooms in that one and we managed.

Married to a Sox fan?? Must be a tense-filled household during baseball season. Cant imagine what it was like in 03 and 04.

I always tell him my next husband will be a Yankee fan. I'll have to do on line dating or something and make that a requirement! Thankfully I was in MN during the 2004 WS but coming home to CT was brutal. Freaking B hats everywhere and some of them were so pompous! :barf:

Believe me, my hubby is 6'2 and needs leg room in the "restroom". It's very roomy. The kitchen set-up is great. Of course there could be a little more counter space, but I don't do a lot of cooking when we go out, we mostly cook everything on the fire outside.

Oh, and I can chill champagne, watch dvds or shows on any of the 3-4 televisions, or swim in the campground pool or relax in the hot tub as well. ;) We travel with our dogs too.

It ain't easy being married to a Sox fan when you are so passionate about the Yankees. Hence the search for NYYFans.......:D

You are stronger than me. I couldn't live with, nevermind MARRY, someone who didn't root for the same teams as me. Especially a Sox fan. There would be wars cause I don't mess around when it comes to my teams.

I wouldn't.

I was at the doctors the other day and the doctor saw my Yankee shirt so he was talking to me about them and how Torre needed to be fired, and how he's rooting for the Mets now, etc. That was strike one. Then he said he roots for all the NY teams cause he's not from there but did his residence there. Strike two, pick a team. THEN he tells me he roots for the Devils. I said I'm never coming back here.

Mmmm you haven't met me yet...;)

Yes I play in a womens league. There are 260 women on the B league and 100 or so on the A league. We have lots of MA women that play (2 on my team alone). It's a blast!!

I'm impressed too! I tried to play soccer a couple of years ago on a company team. I was tired about 10 minutes into the game. So much running. And I love to jog but you aren't jogging in soccer...you're running. Wow.

What injury did you have? I have torn both of my achilles, once playing softball and once playing volleyball. I'm terrified to start playing sports again.

You should keep trying though. You just have to build your endurance and do sprints on the side so you're prepared. There is a ton of running.

I had a stress fracture while training for the New York marathon. :( It was a solid 10 week injury but now I'm starting all over again. :(

I've never had a torn achilles. What is the recovery on an injury like that?

I don't think soccer is the sport for me but I give you mad props for doing it!

I would love to train for a marathon. I think that I might make it a goal for my 35th birthday.

Achilles injuries are a long and painful recovery. Surgery, then 6 to 8 weeks in a cast, then about 3 months of physical therapy. They say that you shouldn't play sports for 1 year after the tear. When I tore the right one, I was back doing sports about 8 months after the surgery. I'm still recovering from the left tear. I had surgery in the week between Christmas and New Years and it still isn't quite healed.

whoa. That's a major injury. And a long healing time.

When are you considering doing a marathon? I'm going to do New York next year - probably my last marathon. They have a lottery system so I'm hoping next year I get in. If you do it next fall maybe we can run together??

Plus I've gained weight because of all the injuries where I haven't been able to exercise.

I actually enjoy it because when I'm jogging all I'm doing is thinking about how I can't wait until the jog is over and when I'm thinking that, I'm not thinking about all the other stress in my life. It's funny because as I'm jogging, I don't really like jogging all that much, but once I'm done I feel so good.
