They just decided to do that? We were notified about the finals schedule a month ago or more. I always know to expect half days the last week of school in the middle school. They take one test every day pretty much.
The last three days of elementary are half days as well here. Always have been.

I have more complaints about my our ridiculous school system. We get a call on Tuesday. That last three days of school will be early dismissal. That's 11:35. So once again with little notice, it's the mad scramble for child care.
Hildy, so sorry to here about Lucy but it sounds like she had a good long life.
Oh that sucks! You need to get all Supergirl on their azz!

Well tonight's graduation....and I'm soooo not ready. I can't believe how fast the time went. Sometimes the days felt so long but the years went by quickly. It's not that she's not ready for what is next because she is. She has tons of grace and she's solid both emotionally and spiritually. UGH...I need to pull myself together before tonight!

Wow, that's really not acceptable--you can't just yank the rug out like that when parents need to arrange for child care. We've known for a good month or so when the last day would be. That sucks.
Giambirocks, your post made me a little teary. Your daughter sounds like an amazing person--did you finish writing your letter?
Thanks you guys for the Lucy wishes. I didn't want to be a downer, but wanted to bring y'all up to date on that one.
Off to check the Camden Sked.
Oh, etiquette question: I've gotten two high school graduation announcements regarding children of my cousins. (We're close, and keep in touch a fair amount, so they aren't out of the blue.)
What's an appropriate gift, and if money, how much?

I have a similar issue but am not too close to this cousin though she is one of the few first cousins I have. Her son just graduated from college and a daughter from HS. In that branch of the family the college graduation is a really big deal too, he's the first one to get a 4-year degree.
I have never met either kid though. They all live in lovely Tucson, AZ.

Our school system is a disorganized mess. Every year it's different. Same thing for the fall. We'll get the school calendar the week before school starts. At least I'm getting close to the point where my kid is old enough for me to be comfortable for him to come home and be there alone. I do it now for short periods but I'm not quite ready for six hour stretches.

Money. Definitely mone. But I have no idea about the expected amounts these days.

We get our school calendars later and later every year it seems. But there is a calendar that the district approves as early as February for the following school year. This year, they sent a copy home with 3rd quarter report cards. The other side has the calendar for Putnam and Northern Westchester districts for 2008/2009, which was approved November 2007.
If your interested, I can fax you a copy.

Linda, that sucks esp if you didn't have much notice. As someone who normally works full time, it ain't easy that's for sure. In addition to the 1/2 days the last week, our schools do 1/2 days when there are conferences a few times a year. Talk about scrambling. We have to take turns getting out 1/2 day for a few weeks when most schools around here have the conferences at night. Plus they get out every Wed at 2pm.
GR, congrats on your daughter. She really sounds like a good kid. I hope I'm so lucky. Enjoy the next few days as she graduates. :)

We have full days off for teacher conferences. They do have night conferences too, but they have too many parents to see I guess, so they have to have daytime ones.

Be proud and try not to cry too much tonight :D !!
Hildy- so sad about your kitty :(. RIP Lucy. I'm sure she lived a very happy kitty life.
Linda- oh wow, that sucks about the school schedule. I'm not a parent, but I remember when I was a kid, the entire schedule was done at the beginning of the year and only changed due to snow days.

Hildy - so sorry to hear about Lucy! :( As far as the gift, I'd send $100 or maybe a $100 gift card. I did a cute graduation gift awhile back - I gave a graduation photo album and stuck several gift cards to different stores into the places where the pictures go. I also gave a nice pocketbook with one of those "mall" gift cards inside.
Giambi Rocks - congratulations to your daughter and congratulations to you on having raised such a fine young woman!
Lindabot - that is a ridiculous way to run a school district - how are the parents supposed to make arrangements for their children?

Thanks for the well wishes, Ladies. I'm more composed now.
Regarding the graduation gifts...if the person is going to be going off to school gift cards are a great idea especially Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Walmart, Staples etc. IMO $100.00 is extremely generous especially if you are just sending a gift and there's no party involved.

Personally if I just received an announcement with no invite to a dinner, party, etc. They'd get $50.00 for me. I guess I'm cheap. If we were invited to actually celebrate the graduation I would gladly give $100 - $150. I hate that whole announcement thing.

I hate it too but usually it's our friends that send them so we feel obligated. I won't do that though....I don't like the idea that people feel they have to give money.
It depends on how well I know the family or the person graduating. If it's someone I've known a long time, I would send a gift, but the gift would be bigger if there were a party.
Personally, I have never received a graduation announcement, though.

Thanks, guys. I think I'll send $$$ but I know we can't afford $100 apiece. I'll have to think this over a little.
Also, this week is the 20th anniversary of one of my favorite movies, so I'm sharing a few pictures. God, Kevin Costner really used to be hot:

I was thinking of sending gift cards for these cousins but then again I don't really know them or what they like. It's also strange because in the past their mom has tried to get my parents to give her money to pay for another daughter's lawyer...they are all so strange, these relatives of mine in AZ. (Sorry Jenn and Linda :o )
So right now I am a little whooped. I babysat for my niece tonight...:eek:I barely got over my cold and now I'm dealing with my monthly horror/pain and am all drained. We watched HSM, went to McDonalds, watched more HSM, played badminton, played "camping," played dress up, played Light-Bright...

Yeah maybe I will do $50 each or something. The HS girl cousin looks cute and girly (her announcement had her picture) so I was thinking of a Sephora GC but I can't tell if any of the stores in AZ are near Tucson but I guess she could use it online.
The boy is an engineer but handsome and A&F-ish. Stuff in that store is expensive though, right? I have no idea...

Hey Ladies - Internet has been out at my house due to one of my roommates not paying the cable bill (despite the fact that we paid him). We're switching over to Verizon Fios on Tuesday, so hopefully that will be decent. But being without the internet has been rough.
I did spend my time this weekend doing some shopping. Got a pair of sundresses at Lohmann's for $35 a pop :).

I think it's easier for larger breasted women to wear strapless than those of us who have nothing to hold the dress up, actually, but as Trish said, good fit is the most important thing. If you know a good seamstress, don't be afraid to bring it to her instead of the bridal store, because it makes such a difference. My friend had 7 girls in her wedding party and they got to pick different dresses in the same color, but only one of them fit right and you could see why everyone picked the dress they did, but most of them just looked crappy because of the fit!
yankeebot
06-18-08, 08:11 AM
I agree on the big boob/strapless thing. A perfect fit is of the utmost importance but there's nothing wrong with a little double-sided body tape to give you a sense of security.

You might find a different selection in the store than what they offer online. And different David's may have things other ones don't.
When we were shopping for Shannen's Sweet 16 dress, we went to one David's that didn't have the dress she wanted and the other one did.
I also agree about finding a good seamstress. They will probably be less money too. David's wanted 85 bucks to shorten and take in Shannen's dress and a neighbor of my sisters, did it for 30.

When you look at their dresses online, it says that they're only available for purchase in the store. The problem, like you said, is that one store may not have the one you saw online and wanted to try on.
Agreed on the seamstress. Find someone who will make the same alteration, but cheaper!

Amazing body - I am just not a fan of all the tatoos and his face is just okay - LOL.
Those comments were hysterical.
Well, I am on day 3 (and hopefully final) of the central a/c install. I am getting a high velocity system that you don't need to run duct work. It is good for older homes. And I wanted to keep my radiant heat.
I will be happy to get rid of the window units and not sweat right after I get out of the shower.
It's been a big pain in the ass (install/noise wise) and had a some extra expense - had to redo the breaker panel b/c I needed more room for the a/c, but it's a capital improvement and a comfort improvement :D .
Planning to hit the beach on Saturday - hopefully the weather hold up and it's a nice day. Looking forward to just relaxing in the sun (with SPF50 and an umbrella, of course ;) )

Yes, I am very excited. And what's great is that I didn't lose closet space like originally planned. In an older home, closet space is a premium.
I like Sandy Hook a lot, actually. That's one of the closest ones to me - I can get there in about 15 mins through back roads.
Will probably hit Pt Pleasant on Sat, though. Want to get some better food choices (<cough> funnel cake <cough>).
I also like going to Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch. i like a mellow beach.

I like Point Pleasant too and Lindsey loved it the one time she went last year but if I take her there all she will want to do is play the boardwalk games and go on rides. I think she should enjoy the beach, collect shells etc. I am so controlling.
I've never been to Seven Presidents Park but have always wanted to check it out.

I'm pretty sure I've been to Seven Presidents before. It was a while ago, so I don't really remember it, but I do remember going to a very "relaxed" beach in Long Branch that was at a park.
One of my roommates has a share near Pt. Pleasant and we might go next weekend -- I have to ask him; but I'd love to go to the beach this weekend as well... I'll have to see on Friday if anyone is up for Belmar on either Saturday or Sunday.

Sorry if this has been asked before..but has anyone been to a "Gold Party"..where you bring all your old gold jewelry..busted up chains, bracelets, metals/medallions, one earring(lost the other?)...and get PAID for the gold?
One of my co-workers/girlfriends is hosting one Saturday night. She's telling me it's like a Tupperware party in 'reverse'.:D ..instead of spending money on plastic ware...you get "paid" and leave your old jewelry behind.
She walked out of the one she attended with $600..for a bunch of old crap she dug out of her numerous jewelry boxes...
With Gold at an all time high, close to $900 per ounce..why not get rid of crap you don't wear? I went thru some jewlery boxes last night & I must have a couple ounces of stuff I'll never miss. Mostly stuff I just don't wear anymore...
Anyone heard of or attended one recently?

I've never been to one but my friend keeps bugging me to go through my jewelry stash and give her my old gold. She goes to the city every few weeks and trades it in for cash. Like you said it's 900- an oz right now so the pay is decent. I'm just too lazy to go through all my jewelry boxes and stuff.

Never been to any of these parties. I think it is kind of sad, but it is the times we live in. I think I am too sentamental and never part with crap. I recently gave away a ton of stuff that will more than likely end up up at partys like you described. When my mom passed and my grandmother passed I end up with more stuff then I will ever wear. So I gave some to various cousins and aunts. I hope it means something to them.
On a lighter note. I am going to Yankee stadium for the first time. I have been trying to get there for years. A good deed I did years ago is paying off and a huge Yankee fan is taking me on a personal tour. I am so excited.

Oh no...I would never give up my Grandmothers pearl ring ,watch or ivory/gold cameo pendant (family heirlooms) that my Mom has given me. That will be passed on to my brothers' daughter when I go.
The jewelry I'll be bringing is my own....items I've either bought myself or were given to me by the 'Ex'...things I don't wear anymore. ( and if they're from the Ex..have little sentimental value..;) )

Yes, one of my girlfriends has done that. It does have to be redone occasionally.

Oh I guess it can be done. I wonder how much it costs. If you have to re-do it every once in a while I wonder if in the long run it would be cheaper just to have it re-set.

I think that's a better option too (having it re-set), unless there's some kind of engraving in the ring or something.

Congrats on all grads. Personally, if no party, no $$$, unless it is a kid that we know well.
Now, I was reading the thread, and I feel that we may have to face a couple of hard truths
Our original resident horn dogs, George and Archer, seem to have moved on to other hydrants.....
So, is CotCrow the Crown Prince????
I know I have been remiss in my cruise director duties, but I would suggest that Trish look around the Lioncloth Dept. and find a little something for the young man.

Oh how cool! I hope you have fun and hope you see a good game. Although I hope you aren't going to a Yanks v. Sox game....those can be a little rough. :uhh:
I am going tomorrow. That was my one request. Please no Yankee/ Red Sox game.
I am very lucky to have bought a ticket package not too long after the the strike. I have all weekend games HP/ GS by the on deck circle. I love them. When we bought them they were cheap. Now they are way out of our price range. I learned early on if you sell games at face value you will never eat a game. I have never scalped a game and never will. Of course it is tempting. I have been offered $800 for a ticket. CRAZY but I have never done it.
Before I owned my package every game I went to was either a date, or a scalped ticket. When I signed up for the package I signed a piece of paper promising not to resell over face. So I haven't.
Anyways. My seats must hold a record for the most people seeing their first game. I joke about putting a guest book under the seat. My tickets have raised lots of money in fund raisers plus I have seen some awsome games and have post season rights too. So I feel very lucky.
Anyways back to my Yankee stadium trip. My mother was sick a few years back and wanted to to Yankee stadium and see Johnny Damon. (She never accepted he was a Yankee). I thought to celebrate her ending chemo we would make a nice trip to NYC. I contacted everyone I knew who might have nice seats. I even tried on this board. I kind of knew this lawyer (not really) who I knew had a Yankee package. I left him a voicemail offering to tade a couple of games his pick for one of his. He called back stating he would love to buy a game because he gave up his package. I was devastated and told him I would call him later in the season.
My mother ended up dieing not of cancer but of an anerysm.
I was not intrested much in baseball. I called the lawyer and and sold him a Yankee/Red Sox game. He and his wife had a lovely time.
The lawyer called me up and said if I wanted to go to Yankee stadium I need to do it now. I said that would be great. He bought the tickets and said repayment is to think of him the next time I sell another Red/Sox Yankee game. I told him hell might freeze over and he said it would be a worthwhile investment. I am sure I can find a game his Red Sox fan wife would love.:D

Actually I asked her and what it was was some sort of platinum spray. I don't know what I was thinking.
LOL - that's cool. Thanks for asking. I guess my best bet is to ask a jeweler.

Oh I am sorry to hear about your mom - it's a loss like no other.
Hope you enjoyed the game today!

I got the same ball for Cassie, figuring she'd love to carry it around by the handle. Wrong! She completely chewed off the handle and then stuck her mouth in the holes to carry it.

What an awsome stadium. We had so much fun. I love splashing around in the rain so even the weather did not bother us a bit.
We had the most awsome host who showed us the best hotdogs were inside this bowling place outside of the stadium. How freaking cool.
It is hard not to be in awe of such a great place to see baseball. The new stadium has a lot to live up to.

Too cute! I had the holey roller for Baby, but she only likes toys that squeak, so it didn't work. Poor Bucky doesn't even know what to do with a toy - we've tried but he just doesn't go for them.

Page 2 almost....can't have that. :uhh: :(
Went out with a few of my doc friends last night and one of them was talking about an 18 year old girl who came in and looked 6 months pregnant but she told her it was impossible that she was pregnant. Come to find out she had a 25cm ovarian cyst. Can you imagine?! I can't believe how huge that is - like the size of a watermelon. Anyway, my friend removed it, drained 3 liters of fluid and the girl is doing fine. I thought that was an amazing story.
Speaking of gynecology, I'm way overdue for my pap and mamo. I can't believe how fast a year goes by. I need to book that appointment soon.
Have a great day ladies. :)
Wow Vick! Glad the girl is ok!
Get going on those appointments missy! :P
I scheduled my mammo. I can't believe they can't take me till July 10. Usually I get a next-day appointment there.

OMG OMG OMG. Thank goodness she is OK. I am severely overdue for a pap but am afraid they are going to find something awful since my period has been really horrid lately. I also blew off my 6 month mammo re-check. I really need to call. :(
Danielle..make that call! I know it can be scary wondering what-if, but it's probably nothing. Better to have it done and breathe easy instead of worrying.'

No they just wanted me to come back @ 6 mos because at my very first one there was an area of concern that required an ultrasound, which ended up not finding anything "bad." So they wanted me to come back in 6 months as a precaution I guess? My whole mammogram anxiety issue was what brought me into the LOT in the first place...:)

Yeah, it can be scary. I had an issue with some lumps a few years back and had to go for the ultrasound as well. They still weren't sure, so my doc sent me to a specialist and she did a needle biopsy. Everything was fine, just fibroids, which can be worrisome, but not bad. I just make sure to go for the annual mammos now.

I too went to a specialist because I noticed something weird and my gynecologist wanted me to get it checked out before going on birth control (this was at some point last spring). Went over to a specialist (my mom booked an appoint with some expert all the way out on Long Island -- but at least she didn't make me pay for it which was nice :)) and they didn't even need to do an ultrasound. But believe me, I was massively freaked before then.

Hi ladies! The dress shopping day was a success. And no problems whatsoever! We all unanimously agreed on the same dress. Which is fabulous because I didn't want to have problems about it.
Here's the dress:

My sister (Maid of Honor) got a different dress- she liked this one and wanted it for the bridesmaid dresses, but thankfully the bride said she can do this one since shes MOH and we'll have the other:

Yea hopefully ours will too. They're 'cut to order' dresses so we're hoping theyll be in sooner. I already need to take about 5 inches off the bottom(its dragging on the floor!) and take the waist in a little bit. Thankfully we know a lady that she can alter them for us quick and cheaper than what DB's would be asking.

You are too funny. I don't even call my half brother and half sisters my siblings and we have one of the same parents.
My mom has a couple half-brothers and a half-sister, and she calls them siblings, though she's not particularly close to any of them. Her half-sister stayed with us a couple times when I was a kid. She is my older sister's age - actually she's 6 months younger than my older sister.

I think this is it, although I'm not 100 percent because the dress she ordered has a small bit of beading on the hip about 3 inches down and I can't tell if this one has it or not.

As far as the half sibling thing...my kids always referred to my stepson as their brother. Unfortunately, they don't consider him anything anymore. :(

Well ladies....my security clearance finally came through and I start at Southwest Airlines on July 18th. I am still actively interviewing with 2 other companies so if something else comes up that's better I will probably take it. The other 2 companies are University of Connecticut Health Center in the Cancer Center Research Dept and the other is with a Private Jet Company at Oxford Airport. I have a 4th interview at UCONN with the chief medical director of the Cancer Center and a 2nd interview with the President of this Jet company.
I am losing sleep over all of this and waking up trying to decide if I get offered the other 2 jobs.....what will I do? When I took the train to the Bronx last week for the game I wrote a list of pro's and con's but that's still not helping. I wish someone would tell me what to do or something would make me decide one way or another.

Man I had so many step sisters and brothers growing up along with a half brother and 2 half sisters. Very effed up family. :lol:Yeah, my mom's dad wasn't exactly husband of the year. Her half-brothers were born when he was still married to my mom's mom. (He married their mom later - his 2nd of 4 wives.) They didn't even know he was their real father until they were adults. Mom's half-sister was from his 3rd marriage.
He died when I was 11 and I didn't know all this stuff back then, so I adored him, anyway. My mom was 16 when her parents divorced but she said she always loved him and forgave him, because he was still her dad. She told me that her grandfather (his dad) asked one of his brothers to beat the crap out of him for cheating on my grandma, because "my sons don't cheat on their wives." (His brother didn't do it, BTW.)

Ok this is the last time I'm explaining this...save this post!!!!
Technically, yes I only have 1 brother. HOWEVER, my first cousins and I grew up together-lived in the same house, went to the same school, etc so I claim them as my siblings as well. Our fathers are brothers who married a set of sisters (my mom and my aunt) so really, biologically, theyre close enough to be my siblings, and its more fun to tell people there's 10 of us. :D We're all within a couple of years of each other so we're really close.
Can you tell who's my sisters/brother and who are my cousins? (we are missing one of the guys)

Karen I don't really know the background of your family problem but it sounds really sad. :upset:
Ooh Vicki that sounds very exciting but I agree with those who said it will work itself out.
Tonight's the last night my niece is going to be here. :( She's going back to CO tomorrow, my parents are flying back with her. We are having a farewell/birthday party for her. Actually I am the only one observing her bday--it's July 17th and I will not be going to Denver for her party although my sister is making me feel very guilty about not attending. I have limited vacation time, flying is expensive, and she's been here for a month where we've been spending lots and lots of quality time together; I was out in CO earlier in the year and will try to go out for a quick weekend later in the summer or early fall. Ladies, am I a bad aunt?

Heh, yeah...My grandpa's family all liked my grandma better than they liked him, even after the divorce, because they knew it was his fault. My grandma still talks to his family that's still around. In fact, the brother that was supposed to beat him up is his last brother that's still living (his two sisters are still alive as well), and she visits him on occasion. Other than him, my mom's family is pretty normal.
My dad's family, OTOH, is pretty much the craziest bunch on the planet. I wouldn't know where to begin with them.

Linda - those dresses are absolutely gorgeous! You're going to look awesome and the bride's dressed is perfect too. I wanna get married  (I whine for the 800th time :D).
Vicki - congrats on the job. As we say in my family, "everything happens for a reason", so see what happens with the other jobs. If you get one of them and want to stay in marrow, then there is no reason not to continue what you love.
Danielle - you are not a bad aunt at all! It's great that you got to spend time with your niece :).
To add to the family stuff; I'd say we're pretty good as there's only one divorce in our immediate family (my mom's brother; and he got remarried over 10 years ago). However, I am going to a reunion in July, so I'll get to see a whole other side (it's down in South Jersey and apparently they're all Phillies fans).

Hello, 600 pages of LOT, that's a whole lot of womanly wonderfullness.
Lotta catching up to do: Those dresses are gorgeous, with much potential for taking the twins out on the strut.
Vicki, how ballsy of you to figure out another career and just go make it happen. How'd you do that? I'm hoping you get whatever nda,job your heart yearns for most. If that is Official Quality Agent for Jeter's Uniform, well those are the sacrifices one must make.
Xena, you should NOT feel guilty about not flying to Colo. after being amazing Aunt for an entire month! That's quality and quantity time.
So has anybody here had experience with MRSA? We just got back from visiting my sister, and got a phone call today saying that that what they thought was a spider bite on my niece's leg was staph, and probably MRSA. My daughter shared a bed with her and I'm somewhat freaked.
Housing and oil and food prices are starting to freak me the heck out.

I want to say there is very little drama in my family but that's not entirely true. There was, I hear a lot of it now and some of it is freakin nuts. There was not much divorce though but cheaters, second families on the side etc....Oy vey.
For the most part, my family is "normal". Although we hate the last 3 women that married into the family.

Yep, moved to Yonkers last October.
Vicki, congrats on all the opportunities. Hopefully you'll be able to come to a decision about which one will make you the happiest.
