If you can't find the bat at Yankee Stadium then you may as well just go home! It's funny how you get ideas in your head and expectations don't always meet reality. Growing up in Louisville, the first time someone suggested we meet at the bat, I was expecting something more like this: The "Real" Bat (http://www.roadtripamerica.com/roadside/Kentucky-Louisville-Slugger.jpg)

Hildy, good to hear your son is doing better.

My daughter was just selected in her league for travel softball! The entire summer will be about her and raising her game to a new level...so excited and nervous at the same time.

I feel embarrassed to admit that I have never been to Yankee Stadium even though I have been a Yankee fan all my life. My father never took me as a kid. So I don't know anything about "the bat". I would love to go this summer when I am in New York so I can see the Stadium before they move to the new one.

Yes, I'd still like to ride together. I don't think my friend is going. Her daughter has a game at 4:15 and we won't be back in time. She hasn't definitely said no, but I know she won't want to miss her daughter's game and there's no one to send in her place to watch.

It doesn't matter to me what time we go. I have also been to Monument Park, so if I don't get there again it's no biggie. But if there are people that want to go, that's fine too.
I would think it would be better to meet up somewhere first though, even if it's not in the parking lot. It would make all the introductions easier.
Definately...

So you girls have to take a picture in front of the "bat" and post it here after the game.

Thank you for the good wishes for my daughter, she is just over the moon about playing "on the road"..here are some pics of her playing third base and catching...

And NO I did not get to watch my man pitch today, helped one of my friends move into a new house and hurt my ankle in the process. But he did get a win though. :)

The bat is real. It is actually an exhaust fan that was made to look like a bat. Most fans meet at the bat when they are meeting up with people at the game. It's tradition. There's a blurb about it on Wikipedia if you look up Yankee Stadium (link below) with a picture. It's about halfway down in the section titled "Distinguishing Characteristics".

The trouble is that most folks pick The Bat to meet at so there could be, at any time, several hundred folks standing there. :)

Hope your ankle is not too bad. You're a good friend. I am over the whole helping friends move and vice versa... I had offers to help me move but I knew I wouldn't help anyone else, so I didn't take anyone up on it  .

So what's the skinny, ladies? Are we meeting an hour or so before the game or going to MP? What is everyone thinking?? We are down to 10 people. Unfortunately Hildy can't come since her kids have appointments that day also.....let me know your thoughts. If we tailgate, Linda and I thought Lot #13 would be best....that's where we park.

Hi guys! What's an MP? Is Lot #13 open? I'm going to a game tomorrow and will check it out because I have to figure out where the FP (forum party) is going to be this year. I'll let you know what happens.

I think I'm still in and as long as I am, I'm good to meet whenever Trish gets me there - Trish, I will e-mail you with directions to my house (I'm right off the Cross Island, so it's very easy, or we could meet somewhere else). There is a chance my vacation day might be cancelled, but so far so good - keep your fingers crossed!

There is a chance my vacation day might be cancelled, but so far so good - keep your fingers crossed! The problem for the party is probably going to be that there is such a demand for parking places that you can't leave a bunch of open spots for the tables and such. On Sunday, we actually had to ask a guy to move his grill so we could get one of the few remaining spots in the lot. You might want to check out Lot 16. It's a little off the beaten track and harder to get to with the terminal market road closed so it's been much less used on the 2 games that I've parked there. The nice thing about it, though, is the ease of getting back on the Deegan after the game - north or south.

Well, since nobody else has expressed a preference for when to meet, I'm going to do it. I enjoy batting practice more than tailgating. If it were up to me, I'd say meet at the bat at 10:45 so we can get in to the Stadium when it opens and catch the tail end of the Yankees BP. Anyone that wants to go to MP can go. We can chat just as easily in our seats as we can in the parking lot. Now, I've gotten the ball rolling. How about some feedback? :)

That sounds good to me. I just have to get the last kid off to school at 8:45, then I'm free. If Ally and I can get on the road to Yankee Stadium by 10ish, we should get there for 10:45 without a problem. We'll take someone's cell phone just in case we run late or hit some sort of traffic.

This way those who want to go to Monument Park can, and those of us who would just like to veg can do that at our seats.

Kim, even if you lost your ticket, I'm sure whoever isn't going can give you theirs. What were they, $18 or something?

Question for everyone who is reading this. Some of you know that I was in a relationship with a guy who I really could see myself getting married too. He lives in New York and I am right now in Washington. Well, we had a pretty big fight on Friday. His Mom is a control freak. I'll be honest, I have not met her and I know that if I was/am in a serious relationship I should know his mom. Well, we were going to meet in March but things didn't work out ok. David told his Mom what happened, that we were fighting and things like that. His Mom went through his login information on delta and cancelled his plane ticket. He's 20 years old, should be living on his own but doesn't because the price of rent. I'm pretty upset... upset in fact that I don't want to be with him anymore. I told him I would get back with him after he fixes things- mature level, not having his Mom control his life, etc. I got the days off work and everything...

Was I out of line? I mean, I'll always love David. But some of my friends agree with me including my father and some don't. Was I right? I just want a lady's point of view as my Mom really doesn't care. :(

To be honest, it sounds like both of you are too young and have too much distance to really be in a "serious", "ready for marriage" relationship at this time. Long Distance Relationships are tough enough as it is, but at 20, 21, 22 years old, you're better off not forcing yourself to settle down with someone that you have yet to spend a good amount of time with in person.

However, this is just from the experiences I've had and I'll concede that everyone is different.

I don't know too many 20 year olds that live on their own. Because they're still kids. If my 20 year old son was having an internet relationship with some girl across the country, I'd have something to say about it.

I agree keg.... I mean, I told him to relax a lot. He was the one who was like, I want to get married. It's just like wow. I don't know why I'm having such a hard time with it but my Mom got married when she was my age. Maybe it's me who needs to accept the fact that I may be like my Mom but I'm not ready for marriage. I'm in a different spot as she was when she married my father. I'm moving to Amherst, Mass next fall... if I pass my philosophy class and the fact that he's bringing his Mom into our relationship is difficult. I mean, I want to be with him. Things would be easier. I mean, was I right to end things?

An internet relationship Trish? Yes, it might be the distance between us and it might be what we have to do until I am living in Amherst next fall... but we know each other well offline. I mean, I'm a 21 year old who lives with her family because I'm going through school.. so is he. I don't have a problem with that. But I have a problem that his mom told him that he can spend a week with me in June and one fight, she goes behind his back and cancels his flight.

Hey you asked for opinions...

Did you meet through the internet?

As a mother, I can see her side. I'd want to protect my son or daughter as well. The same goes if I were your mother. I wouldn't allow you travel to see some boy that I don't know.

If I were the parent and if both of you were living on your own and paying your own way, I wouldn't know about it. As long as I'm supporting my child, I will have some say in things like that.

I did ask for opinions. And I do value your opinion. We met on myspace three years ago... so yes, it was myspace which brought us together. But his parents met through a dating site. I've met him offline many times and we weren't alone when we met. I mean, yes protection is great but my boyfriend paid for his own ticket. I come from a great close family and I do value how a mother treats his son/daughter. Just the fact that it took a month for us to try to get him here and his Mom agreeing to let him go here for a week for him to meet my family and my friends except my friend who came out with me from Seattle in March to see him. And one simple little fight puts his mom to the edge and she cancels it really sucks.

I'm 25 and I'd probably run fast in the other direction right now if some guy wanted to get married now . Being in your 20's and out of college is a really fun time -- you're going to be in a new place next year, you should enjoy it. If things end up working out, they work out... but maybe it's best for both of you that you take a break at this point.

I have a friend who dates people from myspace. It's not my personal "cup of tea" -- if I'm going to be in a relationship, I want to enjoy the benefits ;).

WashingtonYankee, as far as getting married when you are twenty, my opinion would also be to wait. Enjoy your young years or you will regret it the rest of your life.

Secondly, long distance relationships are a very risky thing. I had one and it was a disaster. Other people I know have had them and they ended badly too. You do not get to know the person well enough that way. As far as the guy's mother is concerned, you really don't know if she is controlling or just concerned for her son because of the distance between you. If she is controlling you will have to deal with that in your marriage which can end up being torture. I, personally, would want to know a person and his family much better which is hard when you are at a distance from one another. Ultimately, you would be the one to decide for yourself though.

If his mom went online and canceled his flight on Delta, she has access to his password. Sorry, Brooke. I call bs. He decided he didn't want to come and used his mom as an excuse. On the outside chance that it's true and he has his computer remember his passwords, she knows it and has done this before. Run fast in the opposite direction.

And, remember you asked, having followed your personal life here for quite a while now, you are way too immature for a serious long distance relationship. Keep it light and have fun. You have plenty of years ahead of you for serious.

Trish

I don't have a problem per se with internet relationships. I met my husband through the old Yankees.com chatroom. We were both going through divorces, and he decided to make a fresh start and moved here. He had no children so he had nothing to keep him in Binghamton. We proceeded to get to know each other in person, dated (if you want to call what 40 year olds do dating), and then decided after a year and a half to get married. But we're adults. Seeing each other on occasion is not enough to know if you really love this person. You can like the idea of it, but until you spend real time together on a regular basis, you can't know each others flaws.

And, like Yankeebot said, if his mother has access to his passwords, I'd say head for the hills.

Have a good time while you're still young. I got married the day after I graduated from HS (which wasn't unheard of in 1973).:(

However, I joined the Navy once I got a divorce which was the smartest decision I ever made in my life. Tried the marriage thing at 25 and it didn't last. I remained single with a few heartbreaks along the way for 20 years. Now I'm married to my best friend.

Just believe in yourself, and follow your gut not your heart. Remember also that sometimes when you're not looking for love, love will find you.

Good luck.

Seeing each other on occasion is not enough to know if you really love this person.

Bingo.

I took a class, and we discussed internet dating. The teacher, who experimented with it so she had a better grasp of it, used textbooks, studies, reports etc and laid out the pros and cons of online dating. There were a ton more cons, a ton.
Living on the west coast and dating someone on the east coast that you have met less times then meals you have in 48 hours won't work. One of the main reasons that online relatinships work is because of convience. It's less work. And if you do get married and move in together it's a huge, huge shock. To go from seeing him once a year to every single second will change everything.
Date while living in proximity, if you survive that then try and take it further.

Sound advice most of the time but when you're young, it's sometimes hard to differentiate between the gut and the heart. I say listen to old people. We know stuff.

I'm with you on the "listen to old people". I can't tell you how many times I think, "I wish I knew then what I know now." Experience is a good teacher but by the time you have it figured out it's kind of late. That is why the young would do well to listen to the old so they might benefit by it before they get too old for it to matter. :)

Brooke, people are probably sick of hearing my life story but I'll say it again to give you a little perspective. Before we married, my wife and I had a child at nineteen and there was no way I was ready to make adult decisions at that age. My wife's parents being the wise people that they were, insisted that we didn't get married immediately That was the best decision anyone has ever made for me in my entire life.

Oh I was ready to get married... my wife on the hand needed more time to be sure and I don't think her parents had to twist her arm. I was miserable, and knowing she was dating other people was the worst experience of my life. But the truth is she had to find out for herself and if we had married right away I guarantee you she would have been miserable and we would have ended up divorced, bitter, and hating each other. So, I guess the moral is sometimes you need patience with love because if it's the real thing it's worth waiting for and only time will allow you to be certain of that. There's no need to make a lifetime decision today, take it slow and see what happens because rushing into something usually only spells disaster. Thankfully my in-laws recognized that.

Good luck, Brooke... but I urge you not to plunge into anything at this point in your life.

What a great lesson in life. I wish my parents had told me that when I was eighteen because that is the age when I got married. Of course, it ended in divorce.

Good luck.

Good stuff :gulp:

I wouldn't mind doing that either. But someone commented on seeing batting practice and in order to catch any of the Yankees BP you have to get in there pretty early.
But I could do it either way. I think there would be more of a chance for chatting in the parking lot though.

I think the plan is that we are meeting at 10:45 AM at the bat?? Then we can go in and watch batting practice or if we want we can go get a bite and a beer? If I'm wrong on this let me know because I don't want to be standing at the bat while everyone else is somewhere else!

If I had a beer at 11 a.m. you'd all have to carry me out:lol:

I tried eating sandwiches we brought into the stadium once. Once everyone smelled the hot dogs, no one wanted cheese sandwiches.

I usually flag down the vendors for the peanuts or even cotton candy if I'm in the mood. I never end up eating what I bring.

Wow, what smart parents, and what a wonderful life lesson, miserable though it must have been at the time.
My sister got engaged at age 19. (I remember thinking WHY? at the time, but I was busy being a hedonist. Marriage hadn't crossed my synapses yet.) My parents didn't want her to get married, but didn't feel as though they could forbid it, b/c the guy was a nice enough guy. They did, however, insist that she finish college, and continued to pay for college, even though people told them they were saps to do so. The marriage lasted 9 years, but my sister is still making a living based on her college education. Sometimes the smart thing doesn't seem so at the time.

Good for your parents!

My friend's daughter is 19 and planning a wedding. I keep my mouth shut because the parents aren't discouraging it.

OTOH, my sister in law got married at 18 and is nearing 22 years of marriage this year. Can't say with confidence that they are happy, but they lasted a long time.

I don't like Nair either. I hate the way it smells and no matter how much you try to rinse it off, it feels so slippery. And that smell doesn't go away for a long time.

In my lingo - the critical saving area, I call "The Capri Patch".

Nair still stinks - literally.

I got a basic hair sander from Conair a couple of years ago. If your skin is not too sensitive, it does a great job. It is like a rotary sander with superfine sandpaper, it takes the hair and exfoliates the top couple of layers. But you have to keep things short, or it can hurt. So no Extreme Edition Leg Shaving when its either shave or braid!

Its not a torture device like the epilady - and beats the heck out of waxing.

Sorry about the "wax incident":(

A Hair sander! If I bought one of those, I can just imagine the possibilities: I hear a buzzing noise in the bathroom, and walk in to find my daughter sanding a bald spot onto my son's head.

I thought I saw an ad on TV the other day for a Nair-like product that wasn't actually Nair, and I had hopes that it would be The Answer. rats.

I have a fairly fresh pedicure, and must admit I don't have shy toenails. I usually go for a bright reddish coral tone. Very understated.

I'm considering electrolysis on the crone hairs that seem to be sprouting at ever greater rates on my chin. I wonder how much that would cost.

This reminds about the other day, my wife came home from a new nail salon with their price list and they had their waxing fees listed... and yes, they had landing strip listed. I just laughed when I saw it and told my wife "such a classy place you went to". Was that before or after you booked her an appointment?

Also, you don't have to shave your legs as much for Bermudas. An important consideration.

Which brings me to a girly question: Has anybody here ever used something like Nair or whatever it's called these days? I'm mighty sick of shaving, and had a traumatic experience with wax a couple summers ago.
Yes I have....doesn't hurt or anything but if you have sensitive skin it might now work well for you. Oh and it smells gross, but it gets the job done...depending on what you use, it can last anywhere from a couple days to a week or 2.

:D I have had traumatic experiences with wax as well. And I have never had any luck with Nair or anything similar
I would like to get electrolysis on all the unwanted hair on my body. I HATE shaving!
Electrolysis is actually not that bad...I get certain parts of my face done and my arms....it isn't too expensive and usually after the first couple visits, the price drops(at least the woman I go to does that) Just feels like rubberbands snapping on your skin. Hair grows back much lighter after first couple visits and then doesn't grow back at all :D

I do my own a lot and I have to admit, I do a pretty good job. This woman in my office....I think she needs glasses or something. Her polish is all over her skin...I mean, a lot! That would drive me nuts!
Me too..I think I do a pretty decent job...I do my mom's too sometimes...but only when she wants :)

:D I can't wait for her to see it!
I just used a ruler for the pic, but the fan you have will be better.
I was thinking you could make a 'strap' on the back of the pic...all you have to do is cut a strip of paper and tape/glue the ends to the back of the picture.(so the pic looks like a glove/mitt)..does that make sense?

What's the difference between Capris and Bermuda shorts (serious question).

I loved eating that paste when I was a kid too-brings back memories.

Bermuda shorts are actually shorts, although they come to about the knee. Capris are more like short pants.

The pic I posted was from the webcam so it was pretty close up. It really isn't too big! I was afraid of making it too small and then you'd look like a peanut head.

A hair sander?!? That sounds very frightening! I just shave and deal with it - that seems to be the easiest and least painful.

Trish - I will send you directions as soon as I remember which way to turn when you get off at the exit for my house - I wish I was kidding but I'm not. OOOPS.

I have been busy sending out my cell # to everyone who sent me theirs - I'll try to get it to everyone else shortly.

I am not wearing shorts - maybe capris, but I doubt it - I think my legs will be under wraps.

Yes, please send me directions, although I'm going to mapquest it as well. Can you also PM or email me your cell, or your home number if you prefer?
