To me, the Team Hero was the entire Yankees lineup, particularly the #1-5 hitters...

The thing I loved about last night's ballgame was the fact that, of the eight runs the Yanks scored, 5 of them (and 5 of the first 7) were scored on methods OTHER than a HR...

Damon: single
Jeter: double
Abreu: double (2 runs score)
Sheffield: single (1 run scores)
Giambi: HR (2 runs score)

First three runs: Got it done by methods other than the HR. Then, later on...

Damon: single
Jeter: double
Abreu: single (2 runs score)

Another 2 runs by keeping the lineup moving forward--and NOT sitting and waiting for the 3-run HR...

I really have to admit, this is probably the first time since 2002 I've REALLY felt good about the Yankee's chances in the postseason. They may have won more games than they did this year in the seasons since 2001, but I really believe that this lineup does NOT need to rely on the 3-run HR...

And ANYBODY who has ever read any of my posts in regards to that, knows that I believe that teams who rely on the HR to score their runs will ultimately fall short of their goal to win it all--just look at the late '60s-early '70s Orioles teams or the late '80s Oakland clubs. Two tons of HR power on those teams, but they NEVER won as many World Series as you thought they should've--because that HR power was ultimately shut down in the postseason...

Ya gotta be able to score in other ways--whether that means "small ball" (bunting, sacrificing, hitting behind the runner to advance them, hitting that sac fly to drive in a runner from third with less than 2 out--to me, ALL of this is part of "small ball") or just keeping the lineup moving and turning over by stringing together baserunners and hits.

You HAVE to be able to do the above (IMHO) in order to be able to successful on a consistent basis in the postseason--the Yankee teams of the late '90s were MASTERS at that, and I think this team, particularly the offense, has finally started to embrace that philosophy again.

They can certainly hit HRs (heck, for the 7th straight season, the team hit over 200 of them!), but they don't NEED to hit the 3-run HR in order to score runs, and to me, that makes ALL the difference in the world...................

Team Heroes: Chien-Ming Wang (should've pitched longer, but very very good last night), Bobby Abreu (big hits/RBIs), Derek Jeter (How about that fist pump that flung his hat around? That made me laugh. Oh yeah, 5 for 5.), Jason Giambi (Maybe it's because of that two-run bomb that he hit after just hitting a ball to the right of the foul pole)

Honorable Mentions: Gary Sheffield (better defense than I thought he could as well as his offense), Alex Rodriguez (for getting a hit after being robbed of his sharp line drive)

Oh my god, I am completely in love with this team.

TH: Jeter, 5 for 5 (ARE YOU KIDDING ME??) We are all blessed to have seen this man play.

HM: Abreu...thanks for letting me know how un-clutch this man is...you are so spot on.

Axon
10-04-06, 08:51 AM
Hero: Jeter (don't even think about it HR late in the game)

They played real well. The Tigers brought a strong game, but the Yanks were too much for them. This bodes rather well.

Bob Saccomano
10-04-06, 08:58 AM
Team Hero: De-rek Je-ter, naturally. 5-5 and 3 extra base hits for 10 total bases...insane. He also passed Bernabe Williams in postseason runs scored.

Bobby Abreu, for the 4 RBIs that he delivered in his postseason debut.

Honorable Mention: Giambi for reaching base as often as he did, and that bomb that must have been so demoralizing to the Tigers.

Wang, for a strong performance - he left too early, but he looked good towards the end there.

Stick Michael
10-04-06, 09:12 AM
I'd give top billing to Bobby Abreu. He gave the Yankees the lead with a two-run double in the bottom 3rd and drove in two more on a single with 2 out in the bottom 6th when the lead had been shaved to 5-3. Jeter obviously gets a huge attaboy for setting the table when the team needed baserunners and turning an impressive double play to get Wang outta trouble in the top 3rd (nice pivot by Cano on that play as well - did a great job of hanging in there with Curtis Granderson bearing down on him).
