If I can do it when Joe Buck and Tim McCarver are announcing, I can do it with anyone.
Doing it when Buck and McCarver are announcing is like a survival mechanism. You kind of have to. ;)

I usually am. The thing with the mute button is that you can't hear the crowd noise then, and I like hearing that, so I've conditioned myself to be able to block out the announcers while still hearing the crowd.
100 percent the same way. And working on an exchange this summer, I can tune into more then one thing at a time if I want to.

  I'm sorry I never got to see him ump. From his books and from stories I've heard he seems like he was quite a character. I've read a lot of books by umpires-I've also read Durwood Merrill's book and Ken Kaiser's book. Luciano's were the best ones, though. Somebody should put together a video of him....always a huge, warm smile on his face, big forceful calls, great at calling balls and strikes, talked to the players too......he was one of a kind, for sure.

One of the things that he said in his books that really stuck with me was that he thinks that only a few of the umpires actually know the full definition of what a balk is. He said that if one of them throws up their arms, the others do the same and claim that they saw the same thing he did even if he didn't. He said that at one point he thought he was the only one that didn't know, but one day he was umping first base and one of the managers had been arguing about the opposing pitcher balking, and at one point a fan sitting directly behind where the 3B ump was jumped up and threw his hands into the air shouting "BALK!" and Luciano, when he saw it, thought it was the 3B ump and threw his arms in the air shouting Balk, and he noticed that the other three umps all did the same. So in that game an individual fan really made a difference.

Same reason that the post-season ticket pre-sale starts and 5 minutes after it starts the best seats you can get for the World Series are in Section 31 of the Upper Tier. They couldn't have gone that fast unless they'd already been going to someone. ;)

What's the problem with bringing in Proctor? He's only pitched once in the last week. His last two appearances were on 9/26 and 9/22. I think that Joe has made a good effort to limit his work as of late, but I don't think that it's a great idea to use him only once in about two weeks before the playoffs because then you risk him being rusty.

only the worrywarts
that was a bit of an overstatement but 5 walks and 5 hits in his last 3 outings is a bit unusual for him
What's the problem with bringing in Proctor? He's only pitched once in the last week. I think that Joe has made a good effort to limit his work as of late, but I don't think that it's a great idea to use him only once in about two weeks before the playoffs because then you risk him being rusty.
Agreed. At this point what's done is done. You have to pitchim a bit to keep him sharp.

So if a guy pitches every day for 4 months and then sits out for a month and a half there's no chance he'll be rusty when he returns? I agree that Proctor was overused some early in the season, but he's had a lot of rest lately.

Nah, I think it's very normal that people criticize more than they praise when it comes to a manager or a coach or whatever. If he does something that we agree with probably don't even think about it since that's what we think he should have done, but when we see something that we disagree with it stands out a lot.
