Thank you
Jeter on first, Cano on third. Ground ball to the second baseman, Jeter stops midway between the basepaths. The second baseman originally wanted to tag Derek and throw to first, but when Jeter stopped, the fielder hesitated, and kind of panicked and threw to get the runner at first. Meanwhile, Cano crossed homeplate while Jeter got into an extended rundown.

Ah man.. Arod would win a footrace to 3rd in a jog.
It's because it wasn't a force out once they went to first. Think of it this way. If there were guys on first and third and 1 out and the hitter got a hit, scoring the runner, but the RF threw the runner from first out trying for third and then the 3B threw the batter out at 2nd when he tried to advance to second, that would be a DP, but the run would obviously score. However, if it was bases loaded with one out and there was a base hit to left but Manny Ramirez was on both first and second and the LF picked it up and threw to third to get Manny (1) and Manny (2) decided he was too lazy to run to second and they threw to second to force him, the run wouldn't count because they were forces. If that play had been 4-6-3 or if he had tagged Jeter and then thrown to first, it wouldn't have counted no matter when scored.
And that probably didn't make much sense, but I understand what I said perfectly, so if I was trying to explain it to myself it'd be all good.
Nice.

Right. Jeter stopped and was able to avoid the tag so Hill had to throw to first, meaning that Jeter was no longer forced, and then they got Jeter ina run-down.

I've heard that, historically speaking, players don't come back with good swings after reconstructive surgery.
Yeah, right ;)
Everything good this half inning. A-rod smokes the ball, then makes a mental error on base. He's a good enough baserunner (not GREAT, like Kay says, but good) to not make the same mistake again- so why not make it in a meaningless type of situation? Then, Sheff smokes the ball AGAIN. Nice lineup.
Gotta give Sheff credit. He said he needed about 30 at-bats to get back, it's been close to 30, and he's back. That's 2 hard hit balls tonight.

Batter hits a long drive to right center. Both runners are running, the runner on 1st is on his way to 3rd, the runner on 3rd crosses home and goes into the dugout. Centerfielder makes a spectacular catch and doubles the runner off at first base. Does the run count or not?

Getting Bernie sharp for the playoffs is much more important than getting Giambi the ABs he needs before the playoffs after his injured wrist...
Well, Bernie has only had 2 ABs since 9/23. Chances are that he won't be playing at all in the ALDS or ALCS. If the Yankees make the World Series, you'll probably need him at some point and if he's only had two ABs in like 3 weeks or whatever, that could hurt you. If we were in a close race for a playoff spot or something it would be ridiculous to pull Giambi for that reason, but I think that, given our current position, it's far from the end of the world that Bernie gets a few ABs, especially if Joe/Donnie/Jason think that Jason has gotten the ABs that he needed to get to 100% (or as close to it as he's going to get.)

My initial gut instinct told me the obvious answer is no -- that a runner cannot advance on a fly without tagging up first.
But then you said it was a tough one, so now I am guessing that since he came home before the 3rd out was made, and no appeal was able to be made on whether the man on third left early since that would be the fourth out, then maybe the answer is yes?

I'm thinking it's no, too, since the guy was doubled off, but I'm having the same reservation you are. I'd imagine that even though the third out was made, an appeal could be made. (But if it wasn't, I suppose I can see why the run might count.) If it turns out the answer is yes, I'm going to have to see that section of the rules. ;)
Edit: Actually, I still can't see why it would count, if the runner is doubled off. I would think it would be the same as a 6-4-3 where the runner somehow crossed the plate before the guy at first caught it.

I've decided that I don't want to play Oakland, Detroit, or Minnesota, we could lose to any of them in a series. I just want the championship.
Theoretically, couldn't we lose to anyone? I'm not worried about any of those teams. Of course, I wasn't worried about the D-Cracks in 2001, either.... :(

We need this guy to hit well vs lefties. Good time to be heating up.
OK, since nobody wanted the baseball rules quiz, here it is:
Situation: Runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out.
Batter hits a long drive to right center. Both runners are running, the runner on 1st is on his way to 3rd, the runner on 3rd crosses home and goes into the dugout. Centerfielder makes a spectacular catch and doubles the runner off at first base. Does the run count or not?
This is a tough one....good luck! :)
THE ANSWER IS............It depends what the defense does.
Here's the rule: A batter that does not tag up on a fly ball can only be called out if the defense appeals. If in this case, the defense walks off the field after the force at first is made, the run is allowed. However, if the defense appeals at both 1st and 3rd base bags, the run does not count. This rule is called "The 4th Out Rule" since it's the only way 4 outs can be recorded in one inning.

Are you sure that's not superceded by the fact that it's a DP in which the runner is forced going back to a base? If the runner on 1st tagged and was thrown out, that would make sense to me, but since it's a DP where the guy left too early and was doubled off, I always thought that it didn't matter what the guy on third did. For instance, if a flyball is hit with 2 outs and a runner on third, and the runner runs home and touches home before the OF catches the ball, the team doesn't have to appeal at third to negate the run. The run doesn't count automatically.

So my question is, if ARod is on 3rd base, and there are 2 outs, and Giambi hits a high fly ball. ARod breaks for home and touches it before the ball is caught, why isn't this a run then?
EDIT: Apparently, me and Kevin think alike.

Injury Delay in Chisox/Twins game?
Is that an "in theory" type of thing? Wouldn't any umpire call the runner who crossed home out, without an appeal? No. For example, suppose on a routine fly with a runner on 3rd base that the runner obviously left early or didn't tag up at all. As soon as the next pitch is thrown, the runner cannot be ruled out by an appeal and the ump cannot call him out without one, even if he knows he left early.

This, I know, is correct. I'm not so sure that you're interpreting the rule correctly in the scenario that you brought up, though. (Though obviously I could be wrong. It's not something you see at all.)
So my question is, if ARod is on 3rd base, and there are 2 outs, and Giambi hits a high fly ball. ARod breaks for home and touches it before the ball is caught, why isn't this a run then? The difference here is that the batter made the 3rd out. In my example, the batter made the second out.
The reason I know this rule is because I'm an old fart and was watching it happen on TV back in the 60s...they made it an official rule right after that.

While a fourth out is rare it nearly occurred in a Major League Baseball game in 1980, had the defense made an appeal. Umpire Ron Luciano was officiating a major league game.
The Play, as recounted by Luciano in one of his books, involved a situation with runners on first base and third base, a batter at the plate, and one out. The batter hit a drive to the outfield which looked like it would drop in for a hit. The runners at first and third ran for the next base, with the runner from third touching home plate. The ball, however, was caught in the outfield for out # 2, and then thrown to first base to catch the runner off base for out # 3. If the inning was over, the run had scored. This, however, created a problem, as the runner on third base had not properly tagged up. The team in the field, seeing there were three outs, did not appeal the scoring of the run by challenging whether the runner from third had tagged up. Therefore, the umpires considered the run to have scored. Luciano stated in his book that he would have called a fourth out on the play if there had been a challenge at third base.
