It doesn't seem like this subforum's been getting much use recently. I wanted to post something.

Larry Dierker, it seems, has a blog:

He is a smart guy. Someone, perhaps, oh I don't know, the Cubs, should hire him. Maybe he's still not working because of his seizure problems. I hope they clear up, and the Cubbies at least sign him as an advisor. My Cub friend fans need it.

It would be interesting to see a survey of MLB managers asking them things like "when is bunting a good idea?" "when is hit and running a good idea?" "when is stealing a good idea?" etc. I wonder how many managers share Dierker's view and how many disagree.

Do you remember why he left his job? Did he just retire or was he fired over something? I'm looking at his managerial record and it's outstanding. He was 435-348 with four first place finishes in five years, including the year he left, and he was only 54 in his last year. I don't recall why he left.

IIRC Bagwell and Biggio got angry about having to take infield and lead a mutiny

That may have been the final straw with the two, but they didn't like him from day 1. Those two have been great baseball citizens save this one situation in which they ran him off the team.

He did give a press conference after the 2001 playoff loss that was pretty rough and both sides felt a change was in order. But you never hear him mentioned as a managerial candidate and I wonder why. Is there something about him we don't know? Are GMs just stupid?

I found it interesting that 41% of runners score from 1st with no outs and 40% score from 2nd with one out.

I've been wanting to read that but none of the libraries in my area have it. :(
