View Full Version : "Lost" Season 3 Thread
Something to chew on: Alternate time line theory, where they've been able to jump from one timeline back to another.
Ben warned Jack that he would be repeating history by going through with the call to the boat.
So he does it anyway, and the losties are "rescued" - only to find out they are reliving life from the moment before their "mistake".
Maybe it's Michael in that coffin. The camera shot seemed to really emphasize the funeral parlor was in an urban part of town, presumably a heavily African American populated neighborhood. So back to the coffin - Michael abandoned the losties, goes back home and can't live with the guilt, or the idea of having to do it (the crash/island) all over again ("history repeats itself") - so he offs himself. Kate wanted no part of the funeral - perhaps she's pissed about being abandoned by him...
Kate looked a LOT younger in the flash forward as well. She reminded me of before she knocked her step-father off. She also made a comment to Jack "He's going to wonder where I'm at" (paraphrasing) - would that be her step-father?
Finally - Jack in the hospital, when he freaked out on the new doctor, mentioned bringing his Dad down to see who's drunker. We all know his Dad to be dead, but now perhaps not?
What I'm getting at is Desmond turning that key did something, and sent the losties back to a point in time where maybe they can correct their wrongs. Some are up for it (Kate?) some can't handle it (Michael? Jack?).
A tropical Groundhog Day if you will - would make sense with Desmond's visions - perhaps they are actually memories.

I love it. I think you may be on to something. And maybe now Jake and Kate and the other Losties won't age like Richard and the hostiles.

After taking a closer look at this, the person who dies name starts with a J and their last name ends with ntham.
Could this be Jacob?
Yeah, I thought I mentioned that. It could be.
It also says the person is from New York. Like Michael and Walt. Some people think Jacob = Walt.
But if that is the case why would Ben want to kidnap Walt in season 1?

One thing I keep coming back to is the following:
Ben, for almost the entire time we've known him, has tried to thwart any attempt of rescue for the survivors of 815. Additionally, he has taken measures to keep the island hidden with jamming equipment. Why then, did he have absolutely no problem letting Michael and Walt leave the island?
In addition to great storytelling, this flash forward thing is going to lead to serious DVD sales. I've got the season 1 DVDs and I'm planning to watch them again and look at them with the whole flashback flash forward thing in mind.
If Lost was 24 then this season Sun woulda been kidnapped by the others and Jin woulda hanged.

That's what a forum I read was saying. It seems fairly likely for two reasons:
1. One of Bentham's main influences, according to that page, was John Locke.
2. Bentham starts with "Ben."

Ben: "I was only trying to stop you from getting pregnant"
Maybe the whole flash forward was actually just another of Desmond's visions?
Next season opens with the same scene (Jack & Kate) with a little more story added, then zips to Desmond who now has to get out of the Looking Glass (with cyclops circling around outside w/hand grenades) and warn Jack & the gang NOT to get rescued.

Yea, but are you conceding the fact that he is an honorable person? I'm not quite sure whether to believe that or not, but I have to say that the more that's revealed about him, maybe his intentions aren't quite as sinister as we're lead to believe.

I agree with that. The Answers show they did the writer and producer said that they want it be a mosaic of past, present, and future and I think we got our first glimpse of that piece last night.

The seasons (2 and 3) have opened with a bang. I think they're going to open from the boat, or from Penny.
I think that scene with Jack and Kate will either be the end of the show or the season or the end of something.
When Des got blown up in the hatch, he woke up the same way Jack did after the crash. Maybe they both got the same future thing.

For as long as he's been around he's been saying that they aren't the bad guys. Also we know that he never lies. He might fib, but he hasn't flat out lied yet. He promised Michael he'd let him leave. He promised Juliet her sister would be OK. And he promised Jack that Naomi wasn't who she said she was. I definitely think that by the end of next season Ben and the "others" will be allies.
Plus, if Jack has the precog power that Desmond has, he will see how horrible life will be once he's off the island. Locke was right. The island called them there for a reason and they're meant to be there.
I think the series will end with Jack and the Oceanic 815 people living peacefully and happily until some other plane crashes. Jack will send Sawyer and Locke to see if there are any survivors and it'll be just like how we first see the Others in season 3.

If the flash forward is really the last scene of the series finale, as a previous poster mentioned, that would be the most depressing ending ever, especially with Jack appearing more "lost" than ever.
I don't get the sense that the show will end up as a tragedy though. To me, one of the pretty overt themes is that each main character finds some sort of redemption or closure to their past lives. If the flash forward is the final ending, then Jack will have become worse than what his father was, which would be so pathetic for a character that has been seemingly played up for greatness all this time.

I donno man, he's lied about quite a few things. And in the finale when he was asked why he didn't tell his people that The Looking Glass was operational, his response was...... 'I lied!' hehe. I hear what you are saying, and the more I think about it, the more I think you're right, but I still don't think 'A deal is a deal' is enough to convince him to let any of the Losties (or his own people) to leave. His motivation is very strong to protect the island, so unless there were details that we weren't privy to (eg, Michael and Walt can't say they crashed on flight 815 and must live under assumed identities, etc.) I am not accepting 'A deal is a deal'.

OK I guess you're right. I meant that he's not as evil as we think. With everything besides how he's dealt with Locke, he's acted in the best interest of the island. We're going to see that the Others aren't the monsters they've been painted as for 3 seasons.

Oh most definately, I think that will be the focal point of season 4, or at least I hope it is. But more importantly, I want to know if Ben knows the island's secrets or if he just knows it's special but can't harness or explain it (eg, he grew a tumor on his spine when it was specifically stated by HIM that nobody on the island had cancer and on top of that, he even cured Juliette's sister, or at least played a part in her recovery). I think Ben moonlights like he knows, but in reality, I don't think he does, hence his reaction to Locke. I think when it's all said and done that a lot of posters in this thread are correct, Locke holds the key to the island secrets.

I think Ben is telling the truth, especially after the Penny thing.
My reasoning is that if Naomi's people were truely evil, Ben wouldn't want them to come to the island. Therefore, he would have to block the transmissions of his people possibly contacting them. The reason why he wouldn't tell the Others because if he told them you can't leave they would probably be a little annoyed

Haha of course, I've seen Beverly Hills 90210. Ive always thought that I was capable of creating something better than anything that had ever been on TV until Lost came around, and it's pretty flattering and upsetting that they've used some ideas they've had on Lost and in movies (I swear on my life that I thought of the concept of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind back in 2000.) However, lost has just taken the whole thing to a level thats beyond comprehension, so no matter what I end up doing, I just know I'll never be able to create a show as good, and that totally goes against everything I've believed since early high school.
First little bit of info coming out for Season 4.
Not really a spoiler, but I'll block it just in case.

Doesn't look to good for season 4, this strike will apparently change the entire show.
It looks like Lost will air eight episodes and then go dark. Does it sadden you that you’re not able to deliver those 16 in a row that were promised to the fans?
Yes, it does. I feel like the worst thing we could have done was to plan for a strike and plan accordingly. Everybody had to be optimistic, because then it would have felt like why does episode eight feel like such a conclusion? We learned last year that the show moves at a certain pace, and you can’t build up critical momentum in the first six episodes. In fact, when you are doing 24 straight episodes of a show, the first six episodes are a lot of tap dancing and some writers are able to tap-dance very effectively. Cable writers don’t have to tap-dance at all, which is why all their shows are so great.
At the end of the eighth episode, is there any sense of conclusion whatsoever?
It’s as much of a conclusion as, say, Ana-Lucia and Libby getting shot.
Wow. Really?
Yes. And you’d be, like, oh my god, I can’t believe I have to wait another year and two months for episode nine of this season.
So, it’s a cliffhanger?
Yes. And that’s the thing, we really planned out the three seasons of 16, 16 and 16…so the idea of having to come back and maybe do a 24-episode season, and that would be season five is just…I can’t look the fans in the eye and tell them that we’re executing the original plan anymore.

The third season premiere brought in 18.8 million viewers. The seventh episode of the series, back from a three-month hiatus, saw a drop to 14.5 million. However, Lost still won its hour in the crucial 18–49 demographic and put out the highest 18–49 numbers in the 10pm time slot ahead of any show on any network that season. A survey of twenty countries by Informa Telecoms and Media in 2006 concluded that Lost was the second most viewed TV show in the world, next to CSI: Miami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSI:_Miami).[81] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_%28TV_series%29#_note-65)

Lost will be taking over the Thursday, 9pm timeslot. Should make those who did not enjoy the 10pm timeslot happy.
January 31st will be the season 4 premiere
This is sort of goodnews actually, if the strike continues so that it cancels the rest of the tv seasons, this could really bring back alot of fans to Lost that abandoned it, because it will be the only thing on.
Nooooo I liked the 10pm slot!!

Hope they don't tone down the content/violence/etc for a 9pm slot.

To late for that. That means they would have to rewrite things, and that isn't going to happen.

But then once the 8 episodes all air and theres a 5, 6, 7 month or whatever break then they'll leave. Plus, Damon (or whoever I quoted a few posts back) says this might change the course of the show.
I have no idea how long the strike is going to last and haven't been paying attention. But considering the holidays are coming up, I doubt it's going to be resolved in the next month. Anyone have any info on when it's going to end?

 That's actually the one thing I guessed right on. I had my feelings back in season 2 when they showed Anna Lucia's story.

Think Charlie is dead?
chanman7483
12-22-07, 04:46 PM
unfortunately yes. I don't think he had to die though, he could've just run outside and locked the door from the outside, no? Oh well. But if Tony Almaeda can come back to life, I'll believe anything
he had to die in order for claire to be rescued. if he lived then that doesn't happen.

He's dead on the "island." There is some sort of split timeline/multipule universe thing going on here (Only fools are enslaved by time and space), and he's still probably alive (along with eko, Shannon, boone etc) on another universe.
For all we know, they may all pop up again.
Didn't the writers say there is no multiple universe thing going on?

The writers also said everything on the island can be explained scienficially, and we know that isn't true, lol. The 1950's scifi movie Forbidden Planet was a very big influence on LOST and they dealt with that kind of stuff.

I bought my sister season 3 for Christmas and she called me last night and told me she was on disc 5 already. That made me wish I was still in college with nothing to do all of January.
