Bernie with a nice play!! (Damon would've been there to catch it without sliding)

SVeyland1
08-19-06, 02:20 PM
No, Tim, you try to block the plate.

That's brutal analysis.

Actually I think he is right. It was a high slide and if Posada is standing he makes the tag easily.

mccarver is such a tool. posada is TRYING TO BLOCK THE PLATE. he had to go down to his knee there.

What he's saying is that if Po is standing up to receive the throw, there would have been no need to block the plate because Cora would have been out anyway because of the great throw by Melky.

Papelbon will pitch 2 innings today.

RJ continues the implosion by plunking Alex Cora. Great.

If the Sox were to win today, Papelbon pitching two innings is fabulous. Almost gives the Yanks a free shot tomorrow night at no pen.

Even though it looks like another football game's in progress, I'm still liking Johnson's pitch count vs. Beckett's. This should be an interesting inning.

rajah
08-19-06, 02:21 PM
I think that this is not a problem with the umps. Randy completely came undone in the last inning and he seems to have totally lost it this inning. Cora was hit by the pitch. You can't call it a foul. And while Becket has been given some pitches, Randy has not been close.

Unfortunately, this great team is not going to achieve greatness with Randy J. coming up this weak.

No, Tim, you try to block the plate.

Actually if Posada was standing up in front of the plate, he would have made the catch and the block. Just a bad play by posada.

gold23
08-19-06, 02:21 PM
i really disagree with that. look how close that play is. he has to go down to a knee to even have a chance to make the tag. him standing up to make that catch would have allowed the runner to easily slide into home there.

Not to bring up Varitek, but since he's the best at it it is worth mentioning. He blocks the plate with his left leg while keeping his body in position to make the catch and tag. There's a way to do it effectively without going into a full blown crouch.

No, Cora was close enough to scoring. I don't think if he caught standing up, blocked, and swipe tagged, it would have been enough. Too close to call.

If I'm the Sox, I take that chance -- especially with Schilling going tomorrow.

Yanks need to get to Beckett again and then get to their pen before the 8th.

Actually if Posada was standing up in front of the plate, he would have made the catch and the block. Just a bad play by posada.

I agree, If he is standing, the runner can only slide between his legs, and Posada could have applied the tag to the chest. It would have been in perfect position.

What he's saying is that if Po is standing up to receive the throw, there would have been no need to block the plate because Cora would have been out anyway because of the great throw by Melky.

i understand that he would have had an easier time receiving the throw, and i agree with that, but to me it looked like it was too close of a play to take it standing up. just my opinion i guess, but it doesnt matter now. lets get some runs.

Josh 'Home run' Beckett still in after 100 pitches.
Randy Johnson has been average, not a great outing, but good enough to keep us in the game. with their lineup, 5 runs over 6 or 7 innings is excellent

These big spots always seem to find Alex dont they?

he's hitting behind four OBP machines, almost every AB this series has been with RISP.
