View Full Version : Friday "My 9" games and DirecTV

Last year, I was able to getthe "My 9" games on a channel alternate to YES. This year, I am unable to find same. Does anyone know of a channel where someone who has DirecTV and does not live in the NY market can go to view? I absolutely cannot see why out of market folks get punished by this Friday "My 9" crap.

Well, it looks like no Yankees for me tonight either. YES has decided to
drop the game. Anyone know where someone in Pittsburgh can pick up
the game?

I loathe MY9 games.

Of course it also looks like I'm not missing much so far.

Why no game tomorrow? The Sat. game is on YES at 4:00 p.m., no?

Well in case most of you guys didnt know, the next game you will or wont be able to receive will be this Tuesday against Texas.
The Yankees have the game on MY9 and the Rangers have the game locally on KDFI in Texas. However, it appears that lately Channel 667 on DirecTV has been showing Rangers games that are usually shown locally.
Keep that as a note.

Last year it 183 or 18-something. I think they found and cinched up this loophole. Again, I can understand that one should not be able to catch the Your9 game on YES in the NYC area, but those of us elsewhere should be able to view the Someone Else's9 SOMEWHERE and, ultimately, make it Our9, too.

Until is not profitable for a network channel not to run a weekly game you will be missing out on games.

My9 is the local NY channel that has over the air broadcast rights to the Yankee games - they generally broadcast the Friday night games. When they are at home, MLB picks up the My9 broadcast over the internet.

No problem. It's a local (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut metro areas) TV station that broadcast Yankee games on Friday nights.

MY9 used to be WOR-9, which then became WWOR-9 (who remembers "The Howard Stern Show" on Saturday nights at 11pm?), which then became UPN9, and now, it is MY9.

The whole idea of MY9 is for free local TV which screws the out of staters. The Redsox last year had a good model. They showed their games on the local station but also showed them on NESN. I sent a note to YES to suggest the same model but got no reply.
I would not count on anything on the HD front coming from channel 9. They lost all of their good programming (such as it was) to the new "CW" channel - Channel 11.
I can understand why Channel 9 doesn't want the Yankees to simulcast the game on YES. If they did it would likely be in HD and even if it isn't you still split the viewers and Ch 9 would lose ratings.
Local network games are important. Not everyone has cable.

Then simply simulcast the MY9 games on YES to those outside of the Tri-State area. The Twins do it. The Red Sox, prior to this year putting all the games on NESN do it. The Mariners do it. And as you'll find out tomorrow night, the Rangers do it as well. There are a few other teams as well that do that as well. This serves the fans who dont have cable in NY to get the game, and the people outside of YES' DMA to get the game as well.
Everybody wins.

Are the MY9 games on MLB.TV?
Yes they are.
I've been thinking of getting MLB.TV, since I don't have satellite and live in RI. I only get to see the Yanks maybe 30-40 times per year (the games on NESN against Boston + any FOX or ESPN games and playoffs). It would surely beat my current combination of listening to John Sterling while watching the game in text on Sportsline.com. ;)
Nice to know they don't black out the non-YES games. :)

"Local network games are important. Not everyone has cable". Let's face it who doesn't have cable and why not? Is it because they don't watch T.V.? If that's the case they aren't watching the game anyway. Is it that they can't afford cable? If that's the case their useless to the advertisers because they can't afford any of the products that are being advertised, remember it's all about the money.

Thats been the thinking by NESN and the NBA. Some 85 to 90 percent of households in the USA have cable. Is that 10-15 percent of people that dont have it that important enough to lose money over.
The NBA decided it wasnt that important when it set its Conference Finals on TNT/ESPN. MLB will be next to do that once the LCS goes to TBS.
Even Monday Night Football is on ESPN now.

good point.
The Monday Night football thing is kinda skewed since they switched Sunday Night Football (which had been on ESPN) to broadcast (NBC).
There is no way 85% of the country has cable/sat. No way.
75% seems to be the number:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An estimated 21 million U.S. households, those that rely solely on over-the-air television broadcasts, would be eligible to get coupons to buy digital converter boxes, according to a Commerce Department agency proposal released on Monday.
Coupons would not be offered to a majority of U.S. households because they already have an alternative. The Government Accountability Office estimates about 85 million households watch television using cable or satellite services.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/24/AR2006072400706.html
That is 21 million households (not people).
Moving games from broadcast to cable is just bad. It makes cable more expensive and screws people who do not want/cannot get service. I cannot wait for the uproar when we get Yankees/Red Sox ALCS exclusively on TBS.
I know this is the way all sports are going, but I am not a fan of the logical next steps (each game on PPV). It's coming just wait.

The Rangers, like the Twins, Mariners and I believe another team, syndicates its local games to those out of the DMA. If you watch a Twins game on sunday and it says "29-WFTC" or "Mariners TV" when youre watching it, that means that they are showing the game locally in the city and syndicating it out of market to its fans who live in another area.

Tonite is on MY 9, and I looked for a Devil Ray broadcast and their website says: i
I have no idea what i is, but it does not show on the DirecTv guide as a game being broadcast.
Why don't the Yanks broadcast MY9 games on Saturday when out of market people get blacked out anyhow.

There is no DTV broadcast for tonight. MLBTV will have the game both today and tomorrow, so that shouldnt be a problem.

This (the My 9 crap) I have railed about before and I still do not understand it, whatsoever. Here is my situation which is similar for many. I live in California and subscribe to DirecTV. I get the YES network- many of the games I also get on HD. This is great. On Fridays, or whenever it is a "My 9" game at the Stadium, we do not get to see that game. Now, my question is, why we can't we see the game on (in today's case) Tampa's FSN or other feed? Now, I can see that, in the New York area, My 9 does not want to give those good folks the option of watching on another channel, but what about the remaining 85% of the national market? They are gaining NOTHING by shutting us out. They should either look to add their own coverage to channel lists in the other areas, or lift the restriction. It gets OLD!!! And, dont get me started about FOX coverages on Saturday - they are ruining baseball interest among younger fans.

Actual recent Bud Selig quote on blackouts:
PITTSBURGH – Even the commissioner of baseball isn't immune to the sport's television blackout rules.
Bud Selig admitted Tuesday that he has been restricted from watching some games this season – and that he intends to change the policy that leaves some cities without as many as six baseball games each night.
"I don't understand (blackouts) myself," Selig said at a luncheon with the Baseball Writers Association of America. "I get blacked out from some games."
While he did not outline a plan, Selig said he had spoken with Major League Baseball about addressing the blackout issue.
"Right now," he said, "I don't know what to do about it. We'll figure it out."

Oh I don't either. Selig is nothing but a faceman for ownership. I just found it funny that he publicly said, "I don't know what's going on with blackouts either!"
And also serves as a very useful lightning rod for controversy, so that attention is always deflected away from ownership.
Example: Selig has to do something about steroids!
Instead of: Baseball ownership has to do something about steriods!

Because their FSN channel (634 on DTV) is showing the Marlins game tonight. The Rays apparently are on a local channel that doesn't give its games to EI (like MY9 in NY or WGN in Chicago). Tonights game (if you didnt get the chance to catch it tonight) was on MLBTV. Tomorrow's game is also on MLBTV, but there is some PC internet settings you have to rework to get the game because of the blackout restrictions.
I'm currently testing out some numbers for my PC to make sure I'm in line to watch the game tomorrow at work from my laptop. I dont know if they still do the "pay per day" thing like they did in the past.
