View Full Version : Rain Delay 6/24
If anyone hears anything about when this is likely to be over, please post it here. If it's being discussed in the Game Thread, I can't see it. :o
Stephsamps is at the Stadium and just posted in the GT that the grounds crew has come out to remove the tarp.

There's another rain delay now ... :o
And I missed my chance to take my sweaters to the dry cleaners.
For anyone who missed the first half inning, the Fish scored one on a hit, a HBP and a dubious long single that on replay was clearly to the right of the foul line. A GIDP got Chacon out of the inning.

It really wasn't that clear. Especially at "life"-speed. The announcers needed several camera angles and super slow motion to show that it went foul. Quite honestly, Chacon shouldn't have put himself in that situation with a horrible HBP.

I would doubt that Chacon would pitch. Too bad roles weren't reversed and Josh Johnson didn't get to throw an inning or two before the game was postponed. Means we WILL get him in addition to Willis. RJ should be well rested as he last pitched on Monday. He already had an extra day of rest and I feel pretty sure he will pitch.

Just saw on the YES scroll on the bottom of the screen that they'll play a day/night doubleheader with first game at 1 p.m. and the 2nd game at 8 p.m., which I assume that the second game won't be on TV.

I wonder how Wright would do on short rest. I guess we will see Veras back up tomorrow in place of Reese.
Would the Yankees pitch Beam or Smith.
Neither are starters, and would be a bad idea. I'd guess you'd see someone like Villone, or a kid getting called up from the minors. Beam or Smith woudl hammer the bullpen, which you can't do.
As some of us have said, this is a perfect example of needing a legit long man on a club. The Yanks don't really have anyone that can give them more than 2-3 innings in the pen.

Hope your right... but what other network would telecast nationally except ESPN? This is no different than FOX having their Saturday afternoon exclusivity. If another team had a game scheduled at 1:00pm, it could not be seen locally. That is why they schedule games at 4:05 on Saturdays. Maybe ESPN's exclusivity clause differs from that of FOX? I don't know, but on YES when they signed off this afternoon after announcing that the game would be played at 8:00pm tomorrow night, Bob Lorenz specifically mentioned that tomorrows 1pm game would be on YES and only mentioned that the makeup game would be played at 8pm, not mentioning that it would too be on YES. I guess we will see...

So what you are saying is the Yanks should have held on the Small or Erickson for this situations.
Maybe Al Leiter is available.

Not necessarily. What I am saying is that it IS a smart move to have a guy who can throw long periods. I said it when they released Small. I don't think he's a good pitcher at all....but they no longer have a pitcher who can come in after a guy gets knocked out in the 3rd and pitch four innings to save the pen, or someone to start in the event of a DH or injury. It's unwise.

they could call up steven white (i believe he was supposed to pitch today but the columbus game got rained out too) or if they don't want to go down that route, they could start ron villone.

looks like we´ll get former Red Sox pitching prospect Anibal Sanchez for the 8 ET game:
" Josh Johnson won't pitch Sunday night after his start on Saturday was rained out.
Johnson warmed up on Saturday, so the Marlins are going to hold off on throwing him until Monday. Manager Joe Girardi indicated that someone would be called up to start Sunday night, but it won't be Yusmiero Petit, who pitched Friday, or Renyel Pinto, who started for Triple-A Albuquerque today. Double-A Carolina's Anibal Sanchez might be the choice. Jun. 24 - 9:41 pm et"
he throws in the mid 90´s with a plus curveball and a developing change.

Anibal Sanchez was my favorite pitcher in the Red Sox organization.
He throws a two and four seam fastball that sits at 91-93 and tops out at 95. Great changeup and an average curve. (I disagree with Rotoworld. Sanchez has command issues with his curve from time to time)
Sanchez has had to overcome some injury issues. He lost a year due to nerve issues in his throwing arm in 2003 and dealt with some tendonitis this off-season.
He's 3-5 with a 3.15 ERA in Double A ball. 92 K's, 27 BB's in 86 innings.
A potential top line starter in the rotation if he can stay healthy. I'm anxious to see him pitch in the majors. Too bad I won't be able to see it tonight.

I have a few questions about tonight's television situation. I realize that the 8pm game will not be broadcast due to ESPN's exclusive contract with MLB, but what if the Yanks had set up a double-header with game 2 starting at 5pm, and it started late and/or ended late? Would the coverage just end at 8 or would it continue? Or what if the second game had a rain delay and much of the action occurred after 8pm? Can the combo of mother nature and ESPN's deal knock the yanks off the air that way, too?
Another question...will there be highlights of the game on baseball tonight or the nightly news? Or will this game be reserved for the eyes of those 50,000+ who go to the stadium?

We are going to make that trek out there again. I was one of those "loyal fans" or "idiots" that sat there in the rain waiting for a decision at 7.00 p.m. that they should have made at 5.00 p.m. Since times are subject to change, they could have moved up this afternoon's game to a 12.05 p.m. start and then try to play the second game at 6.05 p.m. I love the Yankees, but they couldn't have managed this rain situation any worse.

You can't change a start time less than 24 hours before its scheduled start. I agree that the 8:05pm start time was not ideal, but they had to give enough time to clear the stadium out (allowing for additional rain delays) while giving people enough time to get into the ballpark for the nightcap. I don't really think you can fault them for this decision. They tried to do things right.

I agree with you. My concern would be additional rain delays with this afternoon's game...which is exactly the problem now. Now at least they can wait out the storms for a long time without fear that maybe 30,000 additional fans will be on their way to see a 6:00 game. The other consideration may have been the staffing of the concessions, security, etc.

As I've said all over this board, I don't agree. With the rain in the forecast again, it's an absolute no-brainer to schedule a normal DH. That way, if rain delays force you into the evening, you deal with them and play on. Now? If they are delayed for a while, it is going to either force cancellation of the night cap or create extreme hardships for everyone involved. I don't even want to know what the parking will be like.
No....the Yanks could have easily made this a normal DH and the only worry would be the rain.
Would there be some people upset at losing their tickets? Absolutely. But you are now going to have the large portion of your fan base upset (can't watch the game, a good % of yesterday's fans probably can't attend tonight and had to get rid of the tix in a short period of time, etc.). Additionally, you are possibly going to cost the Yanks an off-day later in the season.

Another option, then, could have been rescheduling for Aug. 07. The Marlins would be flying up to play the Nationals on Aug. 08 anyway. The Yankees would be in Baltimore the weekend before with that Monday off. They could play this game on a Monday afternoon before the Yankees head off to Chicago and the Marlins head off to DC the next day. Just a thought...
