</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- T9512997 for MLB_20060618_NYY@WAS -->Any fans who left RFK Stadium early in the first two games of this weekend's series between the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals probably regret their decision.
One day after Washington evened the series with a remarkable comeback, the Nationals and Yankees conclude what has been a wild three-game set Sunday afternoon.
The teams have combined for 32 runs and 50 hits in the series, as both games have been won in a team's last at-bat with the other club's closer taking the loss.
The Nationals (31-39) overcame a seven-run fifth-inning deficit to win Saturday's game 11-9 and snap their five-game losing streak. Jose Guillen's triple off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the eighth brought home Daryle Ward with the go-ahead run.
The comeback was the biggest for the Nationals franchise since the Montreal Expos overcame an 8-0 deficit to beat Philadelphia 14-10 on Aug. 26, 2003. It also came one day after Washington closer Chad Cordero allowed a game-winning home run to Bernie Williams in the ninth inning of Friday's 7-5 defeat.
Cordero recovered to earn his 13th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning Saturday.
"For a team that's been struggling lately, and not getting a lot of breaks, this is huge," said Nationals reliever Jon Rauch, who pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win. "Now we just need to keep it up."
Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez had strong offensive games Saturday for New York (38-28), which dropped into a tie with the Boston for the AL East lead after the defeat. Damon went 4-for-6 with a grand slam, two doubles and five RBIs to break out of a 3-for-22 slump.
Rodriguez went 2-for-5 for his first multi-hit game since June 9. The Yankees third baseman, who has been working with hitting coach Don Mattingly on his swing, is batting .180 this month.
The Yankees will look to Chien-Ming Wang (7-2, 4.15 ERA) to help cool the Nationals' offense. Washington has scored 11 runs off Yankees starters in 9 1-3 innings this series.
Wang is coming off a solid performance on Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians in which he outdueled Indians right-hander Paul Byrd in a 1-0 win, giving up just five hits in 7 1-3 innings.
"He has a great sinker, a heavy ball," said former Yankee Aaron Boone, who had two of Cleveland's five hits in the contest. "That was about the best sinker we've seen this year. He was tough, no doubt about it."
Wang has never faced the Nationals.
Washington will counter with Mike O'Connor (3-4, 3.70), who is coming off a 9-2 loss on Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies - the worst start of his rookie season. The 25-year-old left-hander gave up six runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings.
He has never faced the Yankees.

Today is a money game for Chien-Ming Wang. The bullpen is completely shot. It's 92 and muggy in D.C., great hitting conditions.

If CMW can go long and be effective today, we've got ourselves a real money pitcher.

Great inning for Wang.
I say great despite giving up two hits because he is doing exactly what we need him to do, trust his stuff and pound the strikezone.
In a game like this we need him to go long and the best way to do so is trusting your stuff and throwing strikes. Some of them will get hit but thats what you have to accept.

I really hate the National league, I mean why should a pitcher have to bat?
His job is to friggin pitch not to bat.
Why not make a batter having to pitch an inning while we are at it shall we?

I'm an old fart and I like seeing the pitcher hit.... but I understand your, and others, frustration with the 2 different set of rules in mlb.
