obviously not, but a textbook reason why W-L is not a stat to evaluate a pitcher.

ZYanksRule
05-24-06, 08:29 PM
No, but I would rather see a deserved win where he goes more than 5 innings and gives up less than 5 runs.

We all would, but at this stage, you gotta take what you can get.

If we win this game, it's HUGE, because of how badly Randy pitched, yet we'd have overcome that.

Now, we're 12 outs away with a 3 run lead. Another couple runs here, and we're in very good shape to come into Fenway, and win 2 games that Wright and Johnson pitched.

I'll take that.

Buckner makes an error.

the 3-0 pitch was the one to go after, as good as he is swinging...

I agree...with Long on deck, would've green-lighted him there. But Bernie's never been a great cripple pitch hitter, even in his prime. Much more a reaction hitter. Matsui is the best cripple hitter on the Yanks, by a wide margin, because he has the ability to look pitch and location and just unload on that spot.

It depends on who is up and who is on deck. If a team never swings 3-0 and the other team knows it, then the pitcher will just groove it right down the middle.

I just think that you should make him prove he can throw a strike. Take the walk if he cant....otherwise you should still get a good pitch on 3-1.

It depends on who is up and who is on deck. If a team never swings 3-0 and the other team knows it, then the pitcher will just groove it right down the middle.

I'm a believer in it for this simple reason- the hitter is unlikely to chase a ball there. So....if he is swinging at a strike (ideally a good one to hit, but likely a strike in any event), the count is about to go to 3-1 anyway. Yes, a good pitch as well, but if it goes by for a strike the count evens up. If a hitter shows the ability to zone in on pitches, 3-0 is a great opportunity in spots.

Now, with situations like two on and no out, bases loaded, or similar- well, then you clamp down and red light everyone.

This, and calling a hit and run on a 3-1 count are my pet peeves.

I don't think all players should do it, and not in all situations. But many pitchers have the mentality at 3=0 to just "get it over the plate" and that pitch may be the best pitch a batter sees all year.

I'll actually be in the area this weekend. I've got a wedding in Ocean Twp.

Nice to see some fellow Jersey Shore alums here :)

Should be a fun weekend as 40 bazillion people head here.

However....he sets his lineup with one thing in mind and manages his pen the opposite way. Strange.

Exactly, the media just ran with it, if the Duke thing hadn't happened, I doubt the media runs it.

Just really bad timing for it to surface.

We were forced to forfeit a conference game (if we won that game, we win the conference RS title), and I think our captain got suspended for a game or 2, and that's it.
